Rubin: Meet the Mess, Part 2: Can the Mets make 2011 interesting?
I agree with a lot of what Rubin's saying here, but when you indulge in the "Meet the Mess" narrative and you cover the Mets?
Douche.

eh I can't think of anything more accurate
and straight to the point than meet the mess

His job is to be objective
and to be honest, while he’s been right a lot of the time, he’s been anything but objective since joining ESPNNY
There is no hope.... there is no future....there is only GRISSIONZ
The 2010 Mets- Hey, we may suck, but what did you expect?
I'd say calling us a mess is pretty objective
I think you’re confusing objective with nice.

He's being objective and honest...
And goes a lot deeper into finances than anything I’ve read thus far. I think “mess” is an understatement, if anything.

Brutally accurate.
Next year’s not going to be pretty. What really infuriates me is the thought that they’re OK with releasing Ollie over the winter, when he’s only got $12 million left on his deal, but they refuse to eat the contact in mid-season when there’s $15 or so million left, even though it makes absolutely no difference, since it’s all guaranteed anyway. What the hell is the difference, since we’re already getting nothing out of him? He’s literally just occupying space right now, so just dump his worthless ass and be rid of him.
May you be locked in a battle of wits against Jerry Manuel.

actually, it does make a lot of difference
If you buy into the idea that Ollie’s problem is in his head, then there’s a hope that with a new coaching staff he can return to his previous shape. At this point of the season, with rosters expanding in a few weeks, Mets pretty much out of contention and a certainty of managerial change, the Mets can afford to keep Ollie and give him another try. On the other hand, he absolutely has to be cut in April if he does not show any progress during the offseason and Spring training.
Yeah what doesn't make sense
is the fact they think Ollie’s problem is in his head.

Remember a while back in that debate about trading players with back loaded and front loaded contracts...
This
Still, deferring the big payments to the back end of the contract is like running up a credit card while already overwhelmed by debt — it feels good now, but will only make it more crippling to maneuver when the serious payments are due.

We can just sell our debt to the Chinese, right?
And in exchange, they’ll send us prospects heavily tainted with lead.
May you be locked in a battle of wits against Jerry Manuel.

The thing that really gets me mad
is that there are relatively simple ways to improve this team by 10-12 wins without spending huge money on long-term deals (read, Lee/Crawford), but because the Wilpons know they can sell a team with 8-10 homegrowns on the roster (no matter how rushed some of them may be) to the fanbase, they’ll be happy to send out a 80 win team yet again.
Save Jenrry Mejia!

Same song and dance that we've been hearing
Especially in web discussions. Problem with this kind of negativity is: where are the solutions?
The situation they have presented themselves with will be excruciating again this off season, we know. Now is the time to look for a GM candidate to replace Minaya and begin building asap. I like Minaya a lot as a scout, I mean I lot, look at the finds hes made in comeback players but hes a piece of the puzzle without anyone knowing what the overall picture is. I saw Gillick and Tower’s name in the discussion, would absolutely love to hear what those guys have in mind for this team 2-3 years down the road. Also would let them pick the next manager, having Omar do it again would be pointless.

If the Mets go 23-14 the rest of the way
we end up with 86 wins. I wonder if that’s enough for the Wilpons that one of them gets to keep their current job. Sure hope not.

Did you just say "if we go 23-14 the rest of the way"?
Silly person with nick too long to retype.

We've said all this before. Not accusing Rubin of lifting material from AA,
but this has been clear for a while. Good take on the finances, though.
Frankly, if there’s a magic number that will cost Manuel AND Minaya their jobs, I have to root for it.
