Mets Community Prospect List 2010: #7
Welcome to the 2nd Annual Amazin' Avenue Mets Community Prospect List. Every poll will include eight candidates for the next spot on the list, as well as a separate group of testers. Testers will be rotated into polls with each new installation, replacing each poll's winner and any name that's not getting votes. After a few rounds, if a candidate on the ballot receives a decidedly low vote total , they'll be replaced on the ballot by a tester. But for the first couple polls, I won't remove candidates with these low totals.
After the poll, Lucas Duda is the choice for #6 prospect in the Mets' system with 39% of the votes.. Replacing him in the poll is Cory Vaughn, and Kyle Allen and Wilfredo Tovar have been added to the testers. To recap:
- Wilmer Flores
- Kirk Nieuwenhuis
- Reese Havens
- Matt Harvey
- Jeurys Familia
- Lucas Duda

Gas prices today are a lot like a pitcher's ERA. Anything under 3 is amazing, under 4 is pretty good and anything 5 and up is something you want to avoid.

How about Satin
or Javier Rodriguez? I know it’s like his 50th year in Rk ball but he’s actually hitting, and he is still only 20.
mediocrity thy name is Wilpon- jdon
or how about Antonini
sheesh we’re starting to get into depressing stuff.
mediocrity thy name is Wilpon- jdon
I think I'll use this as an opportunity
to say I’m really really confused about the Gee love that seems universal amongst Mets fans now. 4.87 ERA in TRIPLE-A. That presumably means it’d be WORSE in the majors.

Actually it projects to be the exact same in the majors
it’s a product of awful defense, he’s had the likes of mike jacobs and a bunch of other non prospects playing most of the positions behind him, and it’s gotten even worse with Tejada up here. And I’m not sure what love you mean, most people seem to think he’d be a 5th starter.
mediocrity thy name is Wilpon- jdon
And actually STAY a 5th starter
as opposed to the legions of Met fans that a few years ago were saying Niese was going to be a 4th/5th starter, nothing more.
John Olerud, Hall of Famer. Got a nice ring to it.
Yeah
Also a lefty; crafty lefties often exceed their projections.
I wouldn't describe Niese as a crafty lefty
His stuff is actually pretty good. He’s not a soft tosser who rely’s on a generous strike zone by any stretch
Reyes, Thole, Wright, Beltran, Bay, Davis, Martinez, Tejada...

Oh I agree
Just lefties who tend to rely on offspeed stuff often exceed their projections. Niese also has the benefit of a low-90s fastball.

Because his K's have risen and being a relatively soft-tosser
low K’s were always a problem.
Save Jenrry Mejia!
3.85 FIP
8.94 K/9, 2.11 BB/9. The only thing he does poorly is give up a lot of homers. He could be a solid back of the rotation starter for a team.
Which the Mets will desperately need next year.
It’s difficult no to be a little rosier about a player who fills a real hole on a team if he should happen to succeed.
But, yeah, it's perfectly possible Gee turns out to be one of those guys who gives up
1.6HR/9 in the majors, yoyos for five years, and retires with a 5-17 record for six teams with an ERA north of 6.00
Who wasn't that bad in his time here.
Unless the saber-nerds say otherwise (no offense to the sabermetric-savvy here).
Ed Rooney: What's the score?
Pizza Joint Owner: Nothin' nothin'.
Ed Rooney: Who's winning?
Pizza Joint Owner: The Bears.
Hey! I resemble that remark.
I agree—Seo was just fine for a back of the rotation guy. He gave up a hit an inning, a home run a game, had a two to one K/BB ratio, so even though he didn’t strike a lot of guys out his WHIP wasn’t too bad.
Didn’t he get hurt during his lousy 2004? He came back with a good ERA the following year but only pitched 90 innings, and his peripherals, especially in his last seven starts, were very very poor. Well, Minaya got Duaner Sanchez from LA for Seo and Seo was never any good after that (I think he never really recovered from the injury), so that’s a plus for Minaya…
His HR rate was OK here
He was always a bit too hittable. But he was OK here for a bit. The HR rate jumped when he left. I expect Gee could be similar. Probably won’t have a long career but should be serviceable for a little while, and might be helped by Citi Field. He actually has a pretty similar fastball and change up.

and HR rate would definitely benefit
moving from the bison’s home field (coca cola?) to citi field
I like Ike, I hate Jerry
That ERA is mostly due to one godawful month which wasn't even entirely his fault
Even when he gives up a couple of long balls he usually pitches around them pretty well. His K numbers are up, walks are down, and he is servicable enough to be a back of the rotation guy which is all we really want anyway. Nobody is saying that he will be the next Mets Ace

Thats usually the case with ERA, which is why it's such a poor stat to use in predicting performance
Reyes, Thole, Wright, Beltran, Bay, Davis, Martinez, Tejada...

but even the FIP
isn’t that spectacular that he really NEEDS to be called up. That’s like below league average when you adjust it to major league numbers.

We're talking about a #5 starter
just being able to take the ball every time asked to whithout feeling like it’s an auto-loss is good.

you're right that eventually, if all goes well
he’ll either be good enough to have exceeded our expectations, or he won’t factor into our rotation. But right now it’s hard to argue he’s not among the best 5 options going forward.
John Olerud, Hall of Famer. Got a nice ring to it.
That guy Niese had a shitty ERA to go along with a good FIP in Buffalo most of last year too.
After a while his ERA will more closely resemble his FIP, which has been solid
Reyes, Thole, Wright, Beltran, Bay, Davis, Martinez, Tejada...

I lobby Lutz
Is hitting is great and he plays a seeming average 3B (at least). His total zone at 3B is +9 over 161 games. I’m in love with him.
I agree

Ceciliani
He’s part of the reason for Brooklyn’s dominance, even though it is short season.
Ed Rooney: What's the score?
Pizza Joint Owner: Nothin' nothin'.
Ed Rooney: Who's winning?
Pizza Joint Owner: The Bears.
I went with Gee
mainly because this farm system doesn’t have much pitching depth. That said, he’s also pitched pretty well. But, I also like Lutz, I wonder if he becomes tasty trade bait for someone else in the future? or do the Mets attempt to play yet another prospect out of position (2b)?
"Fantasy, reality, science Fiction. Which is which? Who can tell?"
They should be
trying guys at 2B that is.
Save Jenrry Mejia!
In lobby for Josh Byrnes/Chip Hale as Mets 2011 GM/Manager.
I'm sure the people who voted Ceciliani/Puello/Gee
Probably have Lutz higher than Vaughn. I know I do.
I do as well
The problem is that I have Cecilliani and Puello ahead of Lutz.
