• C Francisco Pena: 1-3, K; just called up from the GCL and ready to steal playing time from Kai Gronauer

• SP Akeel Morris: 5.0 IP, 3 ER, 2 H, 3 BB, 6 K, 0 HR (1-1, 2.19 ERA, 24.2 IP, 13 H, 17 BB, 28 K, 0 HR); walks are a little out of control, but he keeps striking guys out

Star of the Night

It was a tough day on the whole for the system, but Darrell Ceciliani gets hero’s honors for his game-winning blast in the tenth inning for Brooklyn. He also hit a double, which is nice to see, considering that a lot of his success thus far has been singles-driven. He’s not looking like a prolific base stealer right now, and I don’t think he ever will be, so much of his future will depend on his ability to drive the ball into gaps, which is still somewhat up in the air.

I’m making ZeErika McQueen goat for his 0-for-4, three-strikeout performance against Burlington yesterday. While he’s calmed down strikeout-wise since earlier in the season, they’re still a problem and a function of mediocre pitch recognition skills, something he’ll need to work on to become anything more than a fifth outfielder.

System Roundup

• A day after a brutal loss against Pawtucket, Buffalo suffered another tough one, this time against Syracuse. After Mike Cervenak singled home Andy Green to tie the game at four in the seventh, the game remained deadlocked until the bottom of the 14th. A Pete Orr single was followed by a sac bunt and a sac fly, and Orr came in to score on a Brian Bixler single. Adam Pettyjohn was once again on the mound for the final blow. The loss was Buffalo’s third in a row. Boxscore
• The usually potent Binghamton offense fell asleep big time on Thursday. Mike Cisco threw a complete game shutout, holding the Binghamton offense to just one hit as Reading beat Binghamton, 5-0. B-Mets starter Eric Beaulac, fresh up from St. Lucie, wasn’t quite as sharp, allowing six walks over five innings, and reliever Eric Niesen realized he was due to give up some runs. Boxscore
• St. Lucie and Bradenton were finally able to play some games after two days of rainouts. And I’d wager St. Lucie wishes the rain had stuck around, as they dropped both games. The first one went down 10-1, with the Mets scoring their lone run in the top of the seventh on a Kai Gronauer solo shot. Brad Holt made the start, which, of course, means seven runs over two innings. And Scott Shaw later came in to drive the final nails into the coffin (Boxscore). The only difference between the first game and the second was that Scott Moviel is somewhat better than Brad Holt, so St. Lucie only lost 4-1. Moviel was charged with four runs over four innings, and Nick Carr held the Marauders scoreless the rest of the way. Wilmer Flores paced the Mets with two hits, including their lone extra-base affair, a double. Boxscore
• Rain did, however, postpone the Charleston-Savannah game yesterday.
• Finally, a game with a happy ending. With Brooklyn down Will Cherry hit a game-tying home run in the bottom of the ninth inning, and Darrell Ceciliani won it with a solo blast to lead off the bottom of the tenth. The bullpen deserves special credit, throwing four scoreless innings with five strikeouts. Boxscore
• Kingsport had 11 hits and Albert Cordero hit a home run, but it still wasn’t enough, and Kingsport lost to Burlington, 6-4. A couple of errors led to five unearned runs charged to Mike Hebert, who certainly deserved some of the blame. Boxscore
• The GCL Mets tied the GCL Nationals in the ninth inning on a two-run single by Julio Concepcion. But just as soon as they tied it, the Nats took it right back, with a solo, walk-off homer by Andruth Ramirez off reliever Jeremy Gould to lead off the ninth. The final score was Boxscore
