Rangers Considering Jeff Francoeur?

Photo

In blogger parlance, that trailing question mark means we're knee-deep in the muck of Rumorville, but that doesn't stop Adam Rubin from floating this game-changer.

Two MLB sources told ESPNNewYork.com that the Texas Rangers are looking for a right-handed-hitting outfielder for the bench and are considering Francoeur.

"His name has definitely been talked about," one source said.

The waiver trade deadline expires today so any deal would need to be consummated posthaste.

He's still rehabbing from the knee injury he sustained on that dirty take-out slide.

In my dreams I see Jeff in a Ranger uniform hitting a walk off 2 run Homer against

Mario Rivera in the deciding game of a 1st round playoff sending the Yankees on their evil way and thusly earning his way into the Mets Hall of Fame.

And you know what that would lead to, don't you?

Jeffy and Omar would realize that they had let the Clutchy Clutch of Clutchness get away, and immediately offer him 3/20.

Here's who I hope we get....

Darren Oliver and Darren O’Day. These guys would be great to have in the Mets system. I wonder why we never have guys like these in our system.

If you've got a DH

an open roster spot, don’t plan to start him, and are a contender, I think he’d be an excellent addition. He can get the big hit (hush!) and is solid defensively. Good bat against lefties and good glove off the bench. Do it, Texas!!!! Both teams will improve!

"Lone Star Ball":http://www.lonestarball.com

They are already debating his merits, and appear to think he’ll be an ok bench bat against lefties.

He’s the enantiomorph of David Murphy.

Many references to grit already, and some wonder why not all crappy white players are gritty. The speculation is that Casey Kotchman isn’t thought of as gritty because his name is Casey.

oh hell according to lonestarball

it sounds like it’s more likely they acquire Mike Lowell.

So let me get this straight Texas wants Frenchy for a bench role

And Frenchy has been our starting RF all season. Humm… I wonder how many other Met starters should be Bench players on other teams? Castillo, Tejada, Ike (Should be in triple-A learning to hit the sft stuff.) Blanco,Thole,

What about

This guy. Mainly because I’d love to see the headline “Francouer traded for Hamburger.”

by dontstopbelieving on Aug 31, 2010 5:52 PM EDT reply actions

This guy is perfect for a number of reasons.

1. Francoeur for Hamburger.
2. He is both a pitcher and an actual Rough Rider (see current team).
3. He’s from St. Paul and probably knows Ike Davis.
4. MSPaint could not keep us down when a Dickey-Burger game was first pitched.

by MookieTheCat on Aug 31, 2010 5:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I was looking at the TX minor league rosters

The Rough Riders’ pitching staff alone has Chick, Hamburger, and Laughter. Frenchy for Laughter would be pretty good too.

Frenchy for Laughter would be too good to be true.

by TradeAndruw on Aug 31, 2010 6:38 PM EDT reply actions

Frenchy is really worth nothing...

And I don’t expect this deal to get done. But if it were two awesome players to get would be either Max Ramirez or Mitch Moreland. But Texas would not ever give them up unless their GM is as dumb as Omar or they really have a hankering for some Frenchie fries in Texas.

by TomCarvel on Aug 31, 2010 6:38 PM EDT reply actions

I don't understand why you expect to get trade for more than nothing.

obviously we’re not getting ramirez or moreland back, personally i think we should throw in 500 k to get anyone t take him.

by Gina on Aug 31, 2010 6:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I dont expect it

Did you not read what i said? It is just a dream if we could actually get something like that for him. Thats all. I’m just hoping for pie in the sky

by TomCarvel on Aug 31, 2010 6:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah i read

the part where you said his value is really nothing and you don’t expect it to get done. Why do you think he can’t get traded for literally nothing? It happens all the time, especially with players on waivers.

mediocrity thy name is Wilpon- jdon

by Gina on Aug 31, 2010 6:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Because Minaya is an idiot

And won’t be able to get the deal done. He’s asking for Neftali and Lee in return probably

by TomCarvel on Aug 31, 2010 7:01 PM EDT up reply actions

yea we are doomed

Because Dickey will get 5 years and $50 mil this offseason and Perez will still be with the team even though he doesn’t even play. It makes no sense to pay a guy to not play. How about we pay him to go play somewhere else and try to get something in return

by TomCarvel on Aug 31, 2010 7:00 PM EDT reply actions

But Gina, realistically

how valuable is a 5th outfielder who plays defense and can hit lefties?

"Fantasy, reality, science Fiction. Which is which? Who can tell?"

by feslenraster on Aug 31, 2010 7:06 PM EDT reply actions

slightly more valuable than i am on the bench

although I like to think I could be as much of a smiley clubhouse presence as he is

by enigma2029 on Aug 31, 2010 7:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Somewhere between 1m and 2m for a season.

Unless the Rangers are feeling desperate I can’t imagine they wouldn’t want the Mets to pick up some salary, whereas the Mets probably feel like he’s worth a C prospect and no pickup of any salary. I suppose it all comes down to how much the Wilpons feel they need the 950k or some fraction thereof.

I’m betting it gets done.

by Jack Str on Aug 31, 2010 9:05 PM EDT up reply actions

clubhouse presence is overrated

if you can’t play you are creating a vortex of suck

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
