Francoeur Traded To Texas; Duda And Mejia Called Up
According to Andy McCullough of the Star-Ledger (and several others), Jeff Francoeur has been traded to the Texas Rangers. For whom is not yet known, but that is irrelevant. The Francoeur era is mercifully over, and players who might contribute past 2010 will hopefully have a shot at playing in September. Think Lucas Duda and Nick Evans.
Andy Martino of the Daily News reports that Duda and Jenrry Mejia will be with the club tomorrow. Fine by me.
I know a lot of you love Frenchy, so this is your thread to say goodbye.
...and the boys of the NYPD choir were hauling K-Rod away... as the fans were screaming out: "Oh happy day!"...
Update: The Mets will receive infielder Joaquin Arias from Texas, per MLBTR. Arias turns 26 in three weeks and has a career MLB line of .286/.322/.379 in 242 plate appearances. He has mostly played second base but has experience at shortstop and third base.
Update #2:
Update #3: Frenchy's final slash lines with the Braves and Mets:
Braves: .266/.308/.424
Mets: .268/.311/.423

It seems like the Mets have two GMs
The dumb one, presumably Omar, who overpaid Cora, brought in Matthews, and Jacobs, relied too heavily on Francoeur, etc..
And the smart one, who got rid of Matthews, sent down Jacobs, cut Cora, and now excised Francoeur.
What gives? Is the second guy John Ricco (sp?)? Does anyone know why they seem to be pulling in two different directions, and is there one guy upstairs who is following the smart suggestions in blogs and perhaps overriding Omar? Any inside info?
um I think its more like
those guys were so awful even morons couldn’t keep them around. Dfaing guys with sub .650 OPS’s doesn’t take someone smart.
mediocrity thy name is Wilpon- jdon
This....
Also, making last-minute desperation moves to minimize damage in a minor way after a season of fail doesn’t exactly make one a genius.
by MookieTheCat on Aug 31, 2010 11:37 PM EDT up reply actions
Maybe
But they had no reason to expect anything else from most of them, especially Cora. Also they gave up Matthews very quickly, as if the person who brought him in was then overridden. I still sense that there are two “minds” at work here.
Maybe...
But it also could be that they are terrible at reading the writing on the wall in advance, but when someone is putting up GMJ numbers (see below) it becomes hard to ignore. Really hard.
by MookieTheCat on Aug 31, 2010 11:40 PM EDT up reply actions
58 At bats
Is a small sample upon which to judge. I’m not saying that Matthews should have stayed. But I am surprised that someone thought he should be the opening day CF, and then that same someone decided after 58 at bats that he was completely washed up.
Perhaps I’m too optimistic, but it just seems that the Mets have gotten smarter about things lately. You all can say that the moves were obvious, but the dumb moves they were making were obviously dumb, and they seem to have stopped.
58 at bats and 5 years?
I think it’s more likely Jerry thought he should be opening day cf and Omar has little to do with how Jerry sets his line ups/uses his players.
mediocrity thy name is Wilpon- jdon
That's my feeling, as though Jeffy says stuff like,
“now, Omar, you get the players, but it’s up to Jerry to figure out how he wants to use them when they get here.”
I am looking forward to Minaya’s tell-all book. There should be some interesting stuff in it.
I dunno...
You could be right, but I’m inclined to think that the team maxed out on dumb moves even before the season began. Have you seen the opening day roster on here? Pretty much everyone on there was a mistake. Hard to make more mistakes once you’ve done that.
by MookieTheCat on Sep 1, 2010 12:18 AM EDT up reply actions
Exactly
But sometime around May or June, obviously dumb moves stopped and seemingly smarter ones started, Maybe Omar got smart, I don’t know. He must have loved Cora, though, for his veteran savvy, and Cora’s gone.
Perhaps Jeffy is reading the blogs and stepping in.
eh i think it's more likely what Mookie said
it looks like they made more smart moves because they made an insane amount of bad ones in the off-season even by their standards.
mediocrity thy name is Wilpon- jdon

GMJ was meant to be a bench player
58 ABs, maybe a small sample size, but it was just painful to watch – it was fairly obvious, based on the plate appearances I’ve seen, that GMJ was unfit for the roster, even as a bench player. Stats can’t always take the place of observation.

Just like that one kid who goes to Walmart, gets his/her parents to buy a $20 toy because it looks cool, than does the same thing two weeks later and throws away the old one (or misplaces it). It’s the same mentality.

I think the reason I like this so much
Is that it suggests other moves are coming, too. Why trade an Outfield Frenchy for an Infield Frenchy, and one that might not actually be as good as the OFF? Because it makes Castillo even more easy to eliminate. Not happy riding the pine, Luis? We’ve got ANOTHER replacement for you.
This sounds right...
With Cora gone and Tejada not MLB-ready, this is actually a pretty good deal as I see it. From what I can tell (and with SSS) Arias is not a bad fielder and is a better hitter than Tejada by a long shot.

At least we have that too look forward to
I can’t see Arias being paid $2M+ next year (arb. eligible), though a good month might entice the FO to maybe do that
(Your ad here)
Oh no. NONONONONONONoononononono.
Please. Let’s not go there.
Arias is a replacement level 2bman who took 10 walks in 242 PAs. Subreplacement level, if we’re going to be precise.
Francouer walks more often than Arias does. If Francouer drove you crazy, Arias will have you building bombs.
This is his line this year: .276/.290/.347
UZR has him as well below average at every position, and -7.7 for his career (SSS) at 2b.
He’s an organizational soldier, that’s all. It’s a facesaving gesture, is all. The Mets should DFA him in three days.
He’s all right if he gets into three games when the MI injury bug is going around the ML team. Anything more than that and you’re punting the season.
In other words, he’s no doubt second on the Mets depth chart going into 2011.
This move doesn't matter either way
It saves us like no money, it gets us a useless player. It’s a nothing move. If the Mets are gonna suck, I kind of liked to have Frenchy around because at least I like him.
It is though just another indication that the Mets are finally getting smart and biting the bullet.
It matters
Because guys who otherwise might not have played with Frenchy still around might get a shot. If the Mets are gonna suck I’d rather they do it with young, inexperienced players who might help us going forward. Not non-tender bait like Failcoeur. This is good news, and no amount of devil’s advocacy can ruin it.

Schmidtxc does a great job below outlining another reason why it isn’t the best trade ever — Arias might be kept.
Duda will probably suck here in September the same way that Chris Carter and other unathletic, suspect older prospects have done. Either way, a few meaningless at bats in September isn’t going to be the difference between whether he succeeds or fails.
Would I trade Francoeur for Arias? Sure, why not. It just, at first blush, doesn’t seem to matter much.

So I question, why did you say he does not suck if my rationale for saying he could be described as sucking is too weak, yet the argument that he may not suck is even weaker?
by MookieTheCat on Sep 1, 2010 12:33 AM EDT up reply actions
Any player with potential but is relagated to pinch hitting once a week
then starting a game or two then sitting a game or to is going to underperform. When you don’t have consistant AB’s your gonna struggle. Throw Dubbs into that role and he will fail also
No my point was more
128 PA’s in general doesn’t tell you anything, especially when it’s being weighed down by a poor start that’s a complete opposite from what he’s been since. It’s kind of like the Davis argument in reverse the first month was likely before an adjustment. Carters numbers the last two months are way more in line with what you’d expect based on his minor league numbers.
mediocrity thy name is Wilpon- jdon
and 128 PA's that are scattered here and there
no consistant AB’s at that.
This sounds right...
I wish him good luck and Godspeed, and hopefully he will blossom into the next [insert player than what we got here.] I just have been seeing a whole lot of bad ABs this year, mostly in PH situations but also other times.

I would like to see if Carter could handle an everyday (or almost everyday/platoon) job throughout an entire season
(Your ad here)
Carter has also said how he is aggressive when pinch hitting
and much more patient when starting. That has probably had some effect.
Aggression seems to be an issue round here...

I bet you he would do well with that job.
Telling you that if he got traded away and was an everyday player he would perform. I’d be happy with him in RF next yr.
eh I don't think he should be an everyday player
I think we should use him as a pinch runner
mediocrity thy name is Wilpon- jdon
Really I bet you if he started in RF and Bay in LF
next yr for the whole season. Carter would have similar if not better numbers.
I think with a non-Hojo batting coach
and bigger sample size, he’d be a fine #2 bat of the bench.

I think I overstated the point on Duda
Duda might be ok. But he was a low draft pick who strikes out a decent amount, doesn’t have much of a track record before this season, and is an average at best 1B/OF bat. He’ll really have to hit to be worth something and he’s already 24.5
by Brian Mangan on Sep 1, 2010 12:26 AM EDT up reply actions
how is he an average at best 1b/of bat exactly?
and he was a low draft pick because of an injury, he was a BIG TIME high school prospect who broke his wrist in college which sapped him of his power.

As for Carter, he sucks
I wrote this in the preseason (I wont link so as to not seem trashy):
“According to the Minor League Equivalency Calculator, Carter would have batted only .247/.300/.382 last season in the majors, with only 12 home runs and more than two strikeouts for every walk. Defensively, he is known as a poor first baseman. You can sugar coat it all you like, but these are bad numbers. "
His line this year is right near that: .269/.320/.395
He just is what he is. I like the guy. He may make a good doctor some day.
by Brian Mangan on Sep 1, 2010 12:29 AM EDT up reply actions
You can't give him his final line without seeing him play everyday
not 2 days here and 1 day here. If Wright was a rookie and was brought up this yr and after the first 2 months benched him his over line would be terrible to
That may be true
But he has always had the opportunity to play every day in Triple-A and never posted a line which indicated he’d be a good enough MLB regular. Who knows, baseball is a great game. But I don’t really see any reason to think he’ll ever hit better than this as he’s in his prime right now.
by Brian Mangan on Sep 1, 2010 12:35 AM EDT up reply actions
yeah but look at the triple a line again
the equivalence calculator just makes it prediction based on what was recorded happening, but if you look at his numbers when they’re adjusted for the park, just his raw AAA OPS not the equivalence, his OPS jumps by nearly 200 points, which would probably change his equivalence calculation.

I think people are being both objective and emotional
We’ve been objective for a long time now, saying Francoeur sucks and he should go. There have been plenty of objective stats. It’s no secret. So forgive people for some emotional comments when it finally happens.
“Duda will probably suck here in September”
Sounds like the defense of Mejia-to-the-bullpen that people were using back at the start of the year. “What guarantee is there that Mejia will be good as a starter?” We won’t know if he sucks unless he’s given a shot.
It’s the little things — it’s Jeremy Reed and Cory Sullivan playing in September 2009 while Nick Evans shaped out a nice ass-groove on the bench. Reed and Sullivan were kaput a couple months later. Would 2009 Evans at-bats have saved the 2010 season? No, of course not. But at least the process would be better and fans wouldn’t be annoyed at terrible veterans who had their shot playing over young’ns who might help, even a little bit, in the future.
Your third and second to last sentences say it all:
Would I trade Francoeur for Arias? Sure, why not.
There it is. Leave it at that. The rest is needless devil’s advocacy and whining about AA commenters who you seem to have it out for.

Am I the only one who thinks this trade is awful?
We had a truly awful player who was certain to be DFA’d and open a roster spot at seasons end, and we traded him for a truly awful player who may actually be kept. Releasing Francoeur would have been such an easy solution to his waste of space, and we managed to actually make the long term health of this franchise potentially even worse.

You seem to assume that Arias will be on the team. I more think of it as Frenchy not being on the team. Not clogging up the system so others don’t get a shot. Not whining his way into the lineup anymore, and not being arb eligible with a $5 million pricetag. Who cares about Arias. Although I agree that they probably will find some way to fuck this up eventually, for right now it’s a a good thing. Our long national nightmare is over.

I've got bad news for you.
Fangraphs has Arias as below average at all positions, and -7.7 at 2b. Small size caveats apply, but he’s nothing more than an organizational soldier who had a lucky year in 2008. His entire career is unimpressive, and it’s been fueled by a .333 BABIP. You normalize that and you have what Arias is: a guy who is replacement level at best, and you might be fourth on your depth chart, at best. He has no upside.
It’s not relevant how the Mets will use Arias, since they’re capable of misusing any player under any circumstance whatsoever. The only things of note are
1) they saved a few bucks by dumping Francouer
2) pretty much anyone they give time to and look at in RF has a better chance of helping the club in 2011 than Francouer would have. A few PAs are still a few PAs, and are better than none.
3) It’s an automatic move by a team that knows what it’s doing. I don’t know yet how much they saved, but a smart organization saves money when it can and when there is no benefit to not doing so.
4) that they should have dumped Francouer in July—that they should never have signed him—isn’t relevant to what the Mets should have done on August 31st, 2010. As of today this was the right move. A perfectly minor one, but still the right one.
I don't think we actually saved money this season
We paid the difference in their salaries, so it only saves us money if we were dumb enough to retain one of them in 2011.

I'll say a few words.
Frenchy was a good swinger, and a good man. He was…he was one of us. He was a man who loved the outdoors, and swinging, and as a surfer explored the beaches of southern California from Redondo to Calabassos. And he was an avid swinger. And a good friend. He died – he died as so many of his generation, before his time. In your wisdom you took him, Lord. As you took so many bright flowering your men, at Khe San and Lan Doc and Hill 364. These young men gave their lives. And Frenchy too. Frenchy who…who loved swinging.
And so, Jeffrey Failcoeur Francoeur, in accordance with what we think your dying wishes might well have been, we commit your mortal remains to the bosom of the Pacific Ocean, which you loved so well.
Goodnight, sweet prince.
