Open Thread: Mets vs Phillies, 8/6/2010
New York Mets at Philadelphia Phillies, Aug 6, 2010 7:35 PM EDT
In an effort to become more "mean", the Mets have acquired Anton Chigurh. He is starting tonight in place of the way-too-nice Jon Niese. Chigurh is a tall lefty who throws nothing but a 118 mph fastball. Basically a sociopathic Sidd Finch. He is known for screaming "SIT DOWN, FRIEND-O" after strikeouts.

Not gonna lie
but Anton looks like a clear candidate for regression to the mean. That strikeout-to-walk rate could stand some improvement.
this
couldn’t we play the pirates/astros/anyone instead? I’d rather them put the nail in the coffin than the phillies.

yeah I'm not saying we'll win
I’d just rather lose to the astros than the Phillies. I don’t want to see the Phillies again until we’re well out of contention.
mediocrity thy name is Wilpon- jdon
Better than seeing them when we're in contention...
In the last couple of weeks of the season.
I'm not that worried. There is no way the Phillies can beat us any worse than we've beaten ourselves lately. I have seen the enemy and he is us.
You're so wise...

Mets OBP going into this series
Reyes = 318
Pagan = 370
Beltran = 333

Mr.Met is awesome. if he pitched anything i'd take a look at it
the old Sportscenter commercial where Mr.met and the Met family leave shea early and the mets make a comeback is pretty great
I hate Philadelphia so much.
As long as B. Wilson gets the save and earns me a +10 in my fantasy league.
Then again Billy Wagner is my other closer.
why
are we honestly still “competing” with the Braves? I don’t know – I honestly at this point want the Braves to run away with the decision, and the Mets to maybe sneak back into the Wild Card race. I’m not very optimistic, though, so basically I just want them to play spoiler for the Phillies this weekend.
2009 Did Not Happen
I like Thole a lot and think he should be getting starts
And is probably a better choice than Free Agent Catchers this offseason.
But it’s a little sad that he’s our #6 hitter.

Doesn't count for anything btw
except bragging rights, but it’s the traditional curtain raiser for the season
Not me
Well, obviously I am, especially after I was so disappointed with the quality of football at the World Cup, but I fear it’s not going to be a great season for United
Yeah, I agree
I think Rooney will out a lot for you guys, and I also think defensively Manchester United are weak.
Could this be the year Citeh finish ahead of United?
"We're investigating the investigative procedure of the investigation of Tony Bernazard"---Omar Minaya (he really didn't say it but he would"
No chance!
Still think United will be top three with Chelsea and the Arse. But City should sew up fourth this year. Chicharito has had a stonking pre-season so they should have three genuine strikers and Macheda/Owen as back up. Defence is a bit issue though. Ferdinand is toast. I only hope Vidic will start trying again now he has his mega contract.
I actually see Spurs having a bad season
I’m not sure if they can handle Champions League and Premier League in February.
Expect Chelsea to win the league again. Everton will win a Cup
"We're investigating the investigative procedure of the investigation of Tony Bernazard"---Omar Minaya (he really didn't say it but he would"
Good call
Agreed on Spurs, I think the CL will be a poisoned chalice for them. Chelsea should win, though I really hope they don’t. Everton should have a good year if they can hang on to Arteta.
And if Everton avoid injuries
which always seems to be a problem for them.
"We're investigating the investigative procedure of the investigation of Tony Bernazard"---Omar Minaya (he really didn't say it but he would"

However, Niese may be a better hitter than Luis
So that single gets Frenchy how many more starts in a row?
7 or 8? A homer gets him 20 free starts I think. There should be an official chart. Way to bunt in front of the pitcher, Luis…
Lets get 2 bunts in a row

In the 20th they are 0-3 at least (WW1, WW2, First Vietnam), ignoring various wars in Africa and other colonial places. I was going back to Napoloen.
I think technically they were on the winning side
in WWI, and in WWII the free French were certainly among the victors…
"Over there" was a popular song...
And the Free French were in England. They weren’t even involved in Normandy. De Gaulle leading the liberation parade in Paris was a political, not a military, decision. It’s like saying the Free Poles were victors. They were in England and found in Italy (actually were given some of the hardest jobs in England). They lost, but these guys happened to be overseas at the time.
I think you're forgetting
the resistance – they were definitely in the action, even if there weren’t that many of them. But yeah, I take your point, WWII was kind of a low point for France as a whole.

Most owners are already rich beyond belief
Players drive the revenue. I’m not saying an individual player should literally make more money than the owners, but Woody Johnson (the Jets owner) is worth well over $1 billion. I won’t shed a tear over him having to pay out a few more bucks (relatively speaking) to players. Revis has like a 10-13 year window to make his scrilla and tomorrow his ACL could blow out.

Go take a look at
Educational system scores. Where are the lowest states again?
that doesn't really have anything to do with lack of
unions though. It’s bureaucracy and the focus on sports rather than academics, unions wouldn’t change anything.
mediocrity thy name is Wilpon- jdon
I don't think this is right....
Teacher pay and advocacy is correlated with overall quality of education. Unions have a lot to do with this. Sure some teacher’s union contract agreements are dumb, but, ya know, they were agreed to as well.
correlation
couldn’t it just mean districts that pay more to teachers generally care more about education overall and put more money into education?
like you’d probably have to come to school here to understand, the problems definitely aren’t the teachers for the most part. There’s plenty of quality teachers, they just have books that are following apart, overcrowded classrooms, kids whose parents don’t care and who are allowed to fail through high school because they’re football stars, insane rates of teenage pregnancy and poverty, so a lot of kids working 2+ jobs. There’s way bigger issues than teacher quality in the south.
mediocrity thy name is Wilpon- jdon
Sorry, but teachers in NY know it
You have to pretty much rape or kill a student to not get your paycheck. The problem isn’t the good teachers, it’s the lengths they go to protect the bad ones.
They have to
If you pick and choose who to protect, then you lose the entire point of a union. Union’s know who the fuckups are, they HAVE to back them all.
I wish that teachers didn’t need a union, but unfortunately they do.
No they don't
They top out at ridiculously low salaries. I now tons of teachers from the south who are paid like garbage and can’t afford to live anywhere near where they work.
Simple search for quality of public education on a state by state basis...
Answers that question.
but i thought regular jobs like regular
people, is what everyone should have and shouldn’t be complained about.
mediocrity thy name is Wilpon- jdon
You have gone
semantical and trying to win on one simple point. I win.
how?
you just spent all this time talking about regular jobs and then claim people with regular jobs deserve better standards?
mediocrity thy name is Wilpon- jdon
Two different arguments
Revis is making hundred’s of thousands of dollars. He is not suffering because of low pay.
but then comes the question
what is considered suffering? How low of pay do you have to make for you to be considered suffering because of low pay? I’ve grown up in the south, none of the teachers I’ve known are suffering. most of them are perfectly happy.
mediocrity thy name is Wilpon- jdon
well when 7/11 clerk is considered a
regular job, then I would consider anything lower that that.
by aparkermarshall on Aug 6, 2010 9:52 PM EDT up reply actions
But when they clearly do something wrong
They send them to the rubber rooms or whatever they’re called, where they do nothing and collect a paycheck. If whatever happened warranted their removal from the classroom, fire their ass. I’ve been told in high school where a teacher would give unwanted massages to girls, he got suspended for a few days and was back teaching. That’s seriously fucked up.
Nah...It's an employment benefit...
Hell of a lot better than a 401k contribution.
That is a NYC
I'm in one of those unions,
and I totally agree. My agency has guys in its warehouse who claim they can’t do warehouse work. I could kill someone on the job, and still have at least a few months before I get fired.

by BobbyV_Incognito on Aug 6, 2010 9:31 PM EDT up reply actions
not really
since the pass rush in a 3-4 doesn’t come from the inside, it helps the wilb and silb stop the run. Nose tackles don’t really have much affect on the pass rush in a 3-4, de’s have more of an affect and most OLBs need to be able to take on tackles 1-1.
mediocrity thy name is Wilpon- jdon
the jets bigger problem
is that they have an olb/4-3 de playing one noseguard spot.
mediocrity thy name is Wilpon- jdon
yeah I was thinking more about
whats his name that’s in Cleveland now. Rex’s defenses make no sense. As recently as 07 he had Baltimore running a 4-6.
that being said all his defenses in baltimore had big ass DE’s, Ngata much, which they don’t have, and pocket collapsing DE’s, like Pryce before he got injured.
mediocrity thy name is Wilpon- jdon
the CBs play man to man
so he can throw blitzes from anywhere he likes. that is the basic gist of the jets defense. But if the CBs fail like lito did last year then the whole scheme fails

mediocrity thy name is Wilpon- jdon
True
But this was a career choice. He could have become a teacher, janitor, etc and while he could have a long long career, he chose a profession that has a very short career.
Again, this is a choice made by him, and this is how it works. When I do a really good job I can’t expect a raise. I can ask for one, and if I don’t get one I can either get a different job or stick with what I got.
Revis doesn’t like his contract/job, go get a real job for 40k and STFU.
or he can use his leverage to hold out
why is getting a different job any better than holding out?
mediocrity thy name is Wilpon- jdon
Completely different.
My point is that NOBODY forced him to sign as long a contract for the amount of money that he did. If he was only average right now, would he be holding out? (I know his contract is not guaranteed) but stay with me.
He could have signed a shorter contract but he took the longest contract he could get. That was his choice. Now he should live with it.
he couldn't have signed a shorter contract
that’s how long rookie contracts are. And only average? Why does it matter if he’s only average the point is he’s better than average. he’s top 2 in the league.
mediocrity thy name is Wilpon- jdon

If every player who outperforms their contract is allowed to bet a better one, then the league would fold.

It’s not out here till the 20th, I’m pretteh, pretteh, prett-eh excited, in a lowbrow kind of a way
It's pretty fun
Not great, and Adrien Brody does his best Christian Bale growl for the whole thing, but it’s not bad. Walton Goggins steals the whole show; it’s a shame he doesn’t get more screen time.

i saw the slingbox discussion up top and have a question...
Looking at Slingbox website. I am assuming that, to get my mlb cable package on my ipod/phone, i would have to purchase both the “SLINGBOX SOLO” for $179 and then pay them $29 for the SLINGPLAYER MOBILE software. Then, since my tv and router are nowhere near each other (who’s are?), i’d have to pony up $79 for a “SLINGLINK TURBO 1-PORT.” So $290-300 just to send my cable to my device.
Anyone know about these things and feel charitable and want to tell me if this sounds about right?

if you only want basic cable, you can run a splitter with one leg to the cable box and the other

Bobby Carson is a pretty solid prospect
I wouldn’t call him nothing…he’s a 21 year old lefty who throws low-mid 90’s and was a pretty solid starter in St. Lucie before a hasty call-up to Binghamton. I wouldn’t give that up for an expensive mid 30’s reliever, who’s had injury problems and really isn’t even a set up man these days.

A little over $1m left on dotel for this year. Look, if I thought the dopes would otherwise invest that money in a more promising year, we would all agree not to spend a penny, but since they are making it up as they go, 1m extra to be respectable, yah, do it.

Ok, remember earlier when I said that after 3 singles,...
We had Castillo and Frenchy, 2 instaouts. The Phillies have rallied without a single extra base hit. But everyone in their lineup has a chance of getting on base. This is the simple difference between us and them. That and they are better.
But the problem began before that
Joe Blanton sucks and we only got two. Parnell sucked tonight and they got 4 on 4 hits.

You can eat one a month.
the East River has been cleaned up quite a bit. But, since I catch all of my fish out here on the Island and way out in the ocean, the fish are OK to eat. Expect for the mercury, which is in all fish.
by aparkermarshall on Aug 6, 2010 10:22 PM EDT up reply actions
Hate to break it to you....
But the fish in the East River and the fish in Montauk are interchangeable. They are migratory, and they migrate. NY Bight, of which NY Harbor is a corner and the East River the primary tidal estuary, flows directly into Long Island Sound and out onto the South Shore and Jersey Shore. Same water, same fish. That said, no I don’t eat them.
by MookieTheCat on Aug 6, 2010 10:22 PM EDT up reply actions
The fish along the south shore of Long Island are migrating back to the Chesapeake Bay
by aparkermarshall on Aug 6, 2010 10:25 PM EDT up reply actions
They all are.
Fish follow the coast around Cape Cod, and some take the open ocean route out past Montauk. Some take the shoreline route down the coast into LI Sound, through the East River, and to the Jersey Shore. Some weirdly travel down the south shore from Montauk to NY Harbor, then down the Jersey Shore. Most stripers in the migration are coming from Maine/Mass/RI/Conn, because local NY fish are already gone south. Nearly all end up in the Chesapeake or similar river estuaries south of NY, though some do remain around the Hudson, especially where power plants create pockets of wamr water.. Over a lifetime they do this a number of times (a large cow striper is usually between 9 and 12 years old), so big fish in Montauk have likely been in the East River or the Hudson at some point.
by MookieTheCat on Aug 6, 2010 10:31 PM EDT up reply actions
But how much access to the water is there along the East River?
It seems like most of it private or city-owned with no access to the public.
by aparkermarshall on Aug 6, 2010 10:37 PM EDT up reply actions
Tons.
Roosevelt Island, but the currents there make it really hard unless you know the spots, the enture coast of Manhattan by the lower FDR, plenty of places in the Bronx and City Island, but I usually stick to Empire State Park under the BK Bridge, because I fished it my whole life and know the secret sports, underwater structure, holes etc. It also does not hurt that it is usually chock full of beautiful women sunbathing in the summer. There is a park in Red Hook that has a good spot by the channel behind Governor’s Island, and on the docks in Sunset Park I used to know a few of the weekend security guards because they fished as well. Then there is the walkway in Bay Ridge down to the Verrazano.
by MookieTheCat on Aug 6, 2010 10:42 PM EDT up reply actions
Actually I'm looking at this one park right under the Manhattan Bridge in Brooklyn
its been a while since I lived in the city and I am aware of some of those spots already. Since I live right by Jones Beach I usually concentrate on that and Fire Island, since they are close and I have the night fishing permit for the state parks.

by MookieTheCat on Aug 6, 2010 11:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Is to look for the older Puerto Rican gentlemen who fish using crabs rubber banded to the hook as bait. These guys know the spots and though they are usually wary at first will warm up when you keep your distance, don’t cross lines, donate leftover bait and hooks etc. Basically once you see them a few times they will share a lot of info, especially if you speak Spanish. Be a gentleman and it’ll work out.

Oh god
Now Bobby O is spewing this confidence shit
There is no hope.... there is no future....there is only GRISSIONZ
The 2010 Mets- Hey, we may suck, but what did you expect?
Saying that when it comes down to Phillies and Mets, Phillies win because they have more confidence
There is no hope.... there is no future....there is only GRISSIONZ
The 2010 Mets- Hey, we may suck, but what did you expect?
If all we did was switch the starters
The Phillies win 6-0 on the game Niese pitched tonight. They would have murdered Blanton.

A classic case of nothing else left to say
It’s like when companies advertise their products in all these “fresh new colors.” That’s marketingspeak for “we have no new ideas.”
In sports the pop-psychologizing starts when there is no more strategy left to talk about. How many ways can you say that this team is not good?
"Those who fear disorder more than injustice inevitably produce more of both." -- Rev. William Coffin
There's plenty of ways to say it
It’s just that they’re on SNY and can’t really go all out like AA or even the FAN.
After 100+ games that have featured multiple lengthy losing jags
they’ve just about said it all. Our stars aren’t having monster years, and most of the other guys, a few surprises aside, blow chunks.

Feces seems appropriate
May you be locked in a battle of wits against Jerry Manuel.

Good God,
stop using the word swagger!!!!
"I want to win now, not 3 years from now. That's my stance." - Kevin Burkhardt
Well hey, Brooklyn with the walkoff HR after Vaughn tied it in the bottom of the 9th with a 2run HR.
Fuck this confidence crapola.
We are a losing team. No confidence comes from that. Let this confidence BS go.
Consequences will never be the same.
I mean
they’ve been chasing all year. I don’t know why they’re surprised all of a sudden

You would think Hojo would say something about it at least once
Yet he hasn’t
There is no hope.... there is no future....there is only GRISSIONZ
The 2010 Mets- Hey, we may suck, but what did you expect?
my lineup for tommorow
Pagan CF, Felciano RF, Carter LF, Hess 3rd, Cora SS Castillo 2nd Davis !st (Sorry Ike no backup on this shit team), Thole C
That ain't gonna
do anything.
"I want to win now, not 3 years from now. That's my stance." - Kevin Burkhardt
WE FUCKING SUCK
They’re fucking trying, but the team as a whole is just fucking awful, and there’s no other way to say it.
There is no hope.... there is no future....there is only GRISSIONZ
The 2010 Mets- Hey, we may suck, but what did you expect?
Thank you
It’s like no one gets it. They’re trying as best as they can, but the pieces aren’t there. It’s not “heart,” “swagger,” “the winning gene” or whatever. They’re just not that good.

Doesnt anyone look at the stats on this team?
They really arent in our favor
