Fernando Martinez And Ruben Tejada To Be Called Up, Not Traded

David Waldstein of the New York Times quiets earlier speculation that the prospects would be dealt.  A post-July 31 trade seemed unlikely, but stranger things have happened.

The Mets have not yet announced the two players Fernando and Ruben will replace. Alex Cora, Jeff Francoeur, Chris Carter, Jesus Feliciano and maybe even Luis Castillo seem like the most likely candidates. Francoeur has cleared waivers, so he can be traded. Hopefully Frenchy and Cora are on their way out.

F-Mart doesn’t really deserve a call-up, but it doesn’t hurt to give him some more big league experience, and its a bit rejuvenating to the fans too.

I doubt Castillo is going anywhere, but hopefully they cut or trade Francoeur and Cora. I mean something has to give here. That, combined with these moves, would be make a nice day.

Might have more to do with Buffalo

Adds Chris Carter to the Buffalo team for the playoffs and to keep the fans there happy. F! Mart is hardly the the headline player there this season…maybe a little MLB time will inspire him.

I do hope this spells the end of Castillo.

.As far as Cora is concerned--it is just money.

Cora was going to make some money if he hit 80 appearances. The fact that he sucked did not necessitate his dismissal. If that was a condition for staying, half the roster would be gone. Next they will unload Francoeur’s money. The Wontpons are motivated by money, and money alone. They don’t want to win, they want to place or show..

appropo of absolutely nothing

i usually leave the frenzied Beltran boostering to others, but it is worth noting that Bay is nowhere near coming back after 2 weeks, whereas when Beltran got his brains bashed in in San Diego and he was back on the field soon after, i think a week if memory serves.

Obviously brain injuries are serious and there are many variables involved, and I’m not saying Bay isn’t tough or impugning him in any way, eh, but comparatively, he kissed that padded wall when Beltran had a brain on face collision, one of the most gruesome things I’ve seen in baseball. It just makes me scratch and re-scratch my head when I hear that Beltran is soft….

Duda is probably getting lowballed because he finally grew into his body strengthwise this year. I think projection systems take into account the last couple years and than do a flat across the board adjustment based on age.

It's all about money

Cora gets released so the Mets save $2 million next year. Frenchy is a free agent and we have to pay him anyway unless he gets traded, so he gets to keep his spot. It’s the same infallible logic that allows Oliver Perez to stay on the roster.

Don’t see why Martinez is coming up for Feliciano if we are not releasing Francoeur. Are we going to keep him on the bench?

Probably Is

Seattle has a highly thought of young 2B in AAA right now (Dustin Ackley) , probably doesn’t have a need for Figgins for 3 years. I think Castillo for Figgins is what is being discussed. I am not too thrilled about having Figgins for 3 years though. Not sure who else would be included, maybe some prospects. I doubt they would be interested in Ollie or Francoeur. I hear they have an OK RF by the name of Ichiro. And lord knows, no one needs Ollie.

I'd take Figgans and then try to spin him during the offseason

As long as Bay is out

We might as well play Fernando everyday. He’s the only player in the system who really has a future as a starting outfielder with significant time in AAA. I actually like this a lot right now, as long as Tejada is our starting second baseman and Fernando is our starting right fielder.

Sadly, you're probably right, but him riding the bench makes zero sense

From a baseball perspective, he doesn’t get any better by not playing regularly. From a “chemistry” perspective, a 21-year-old benchwarmer can’t provide any kind of “spark.” And from a business perspective, burying a prospect on the bench doesn’t help sell tickets or appease an angry fanbase that “wants to see the kids.”

I think you meant

“unbelievably” stupid.

Astonishingly (well, it’s the Mets, so I guess it’s more in the nature of “unsurprisingly”) the Mets seem to be planning to platoon Martinez with Francouer, thereby promoting a guy who hasn’t really learned to deal with AAA pitching in order to put him in a situation where he’ll get no experience at all hitting against lefthanded pitching—the pitching Martinez struggles mightily against.

Oh, and all in order to continue to give at bats to Jeff Francouer. It’s genius. Of a kind. But definitely genius.

I’m serious when I say, if you wanted to do what you could to hamper Martinez’s ability to ever become a major league regular, short of kneecapping him this is exactly what you would do.

by Jack Str on Aug 8, 2010 3:22 AM EDT up reply actions

Guys

We don’t know that he’ll get zero at-bats against lefties. He will likely hit against a few lefty relievers. And I don’t worry too much about missing 3 weeks of hitting against crappy lefties in AAA who can’t even get promoted before late Septermber. Really, 3-4 weeks of extra time playing more than half the time in the majors is going to hamper him or retard his development? I think that’s a bit much. He will miss maybe 20-30 at-bats against AAA lefties between now and when he’d be called up anyway, and get maybe 6-7 at bats against lefties in the majors (just shot in the dark numbers). Not like the Mejia situation, and of course they are overall too aggressive with rushing the prospects, but this barely registers on the “oh noes, what are they doing?!”

by wobatus on Aug 9, 2010 11:23 AM EDT up reply actions

Fernando against lefties

Actually, he hasn’t been god-awful against lefties in his AAA career. He has struggled a bit this year, but we are talking only 71 plate appearances. Which is another reason why calling him up now to platoon isn’t a disaster of large or even small proportions. He just won’t be losing all that many at-bats called up now.

But F! now has 467 PA in his AAA career. Almost a full season by age 21.

In that time his slash line against lefties is .269/.327/.433. His overall slash line is .270/.328/.496. So he doesn’t have a huge platoon split. He does have considerably more power against righties. His iso against righties was .267 last year and .221 this year, with an overall AAA career ISO of .226.

Indeed, one would love to see progression instead of a slight regression, and especially more patience. He likely could use some more AAA time. More likely he could have used more A+ and AA time when younger. Or maybe more time will just reveal a guy who won’t ever get the plate discipline, but he seems like he could at least be a lefty Johhny Gomes.

In any event, as you can see, he gets about a quarter of his PAs in AAA against lefties. From now to September 1 call-ups he’d get maybe 20 games, 80-90 plate appearances, maybe 20-30 against lefties. Missing those for maybe 5 PA against major league lefties before September is not going to do anything in the vast scheme of Martinez’s rushed development.

Would it be better if Frenchy were gone or never here? Sure. Would it be better that Martinez had been given a full season at St. Lucie when he was 18 or 19, or repeat the SALLY like Flores did, and was just now being promoted to AAA? Even better that he not be injured so much? Yeah, but he now has almost a full season at AAA, and I don’t mind having him watch Frenchy win a game with a homer of Hamels, and miss a few at bats against my generic AAAA lefty, David Huff. I actually like Huff and he may be in Cleveland now anyway. Frenchy is here for now anyway, and he does have a wRC+ of 125 against lefties.

I suppose playing Duda in left, Beltran and pagan makes more sense, although I suspect F! playing in right would make for a better overall outfield d. And Duda is still mostly his 330 or so at-bats in AA-AAA this year at a more advanced age. So while calling him up may have made more sense, it doesn’t strike me as that much of a disaster to see if Martinez can help against righties.

Fernando really can’t hit lefties now. He’ll get the odd at bat against lefties. He’ll get plenty of opportunities next year or so. I am not going to worry about the lost chance of 50 august and early September at bats against aaa lefties.

I’ll take frenchy’s homer against hamels tonight. 8 games out. The mets have won 3 pennants. They were more games out than they are now on august 7 when they won 2 of those. ’69 and ’73. A frenchy/f! platoon is fine by me.

Is conflating the unbelievable with the norm. And the Mets rarely, in the last 35 years, have come out on the long end of that stick. I gotta believe that it will happen to someone else.

by MookieTheCat on Aug 10, 2010 1:10 AM EDT up reply actions

No

The mistake is conflating the possible, if remote, with the impossible. The Mets are not somehow ruining Martinez by calling him up 3 weeks early in the pursuit of that remote possibility and entertaining their fans with a hopeful glimpse of the future.

The Mets won 10 of 11 games in April, including a sweep of Atlanta. The Mets won 12 of 13 in June at one point. Without Beltran. If the Mets go on a 9 of 10 streak, and Atlanta goes 3 and 7, which they have done several times this season, suddenly the Mets are 2 and a half out, even before starting a series down in Atlanta at the end of August. Atlanta doesn’t strike me as a slump proof team.

Now, is that likely? hell no. But it is distinctly possible. The Mets have a stretch where 7 of 13 games are against a Houston team without Berkman and Oswalt which sucked with those 2. The other 6 are against Florida and Pittsburgh in that stretch. Now, the Mets couldn’t even take a couple from the D’Backs. But I look at that stretch, with hungry young players up, and think there’s a shot to go on a little hot streak.

It just doesn’t take much to creep back in it. Of course, other than those 2 streaks earlier this year the Mets have been horrible. Sustaining those stretches is what is hard. But once you go on a streak like that it is in the bag, and anything can happen. Get within 4-5 games out heading into that Atlanta series at the end of August and you have given yourself a puncher’s chance.

I get that Fernando may not be quite ready, that 330 Duda at-bats at age 24 has leap-frogged him in everyone’s mind, sss be damned, ahead of F!‘s long on potential, short on results, career, despite the ARL argument. Duda likely does make the outfield d a little weaker than F would, though. So although maybe not the best choice, I am still glad they called up martinez and don’t mind much that Frenchy will grab at-bats against lefties. It’s the one thing he can do along with throwing BBs from rf.

Come see the future, my friends. Enjoy it. F!, Thole, Tejada (who, by the way, per xbabip, should have a line of .258/.330/.301-his obp saved by the HBPs, still pitiful, if not execrable), Ike, Niese, Captain Fastball, and, hopefully, suddenly trustworthy Mike Pelfrey. :)

Dream large, my friends. Dream large.

Oh

and I forgot. Those youngsters will be surrounding a healthy core, to which Pagan has been added. I think the major disappointment has been successfully treading water until Beltran came back, then completely bombing out. That takes the air out of everyone’s sails. Beltran hasn’t hit, and Wright suddenly slumped. But that is SSS, and the 3 musketeers plus D’Artagnan Pagan could suddenly get locked. Like when Cleon got hot after coming back from injury in ’73.

OK, so that’s 2 miracle years out of 48. In 44 of those years, the results were disappointing. We watch anyway. And the win-win of it is if they fall short, Jerry will be gone.

by wobatus on Aug 10, 2010 8:32 AM EDT up reply actions

What?

Why? It’s over and you are still playing a guy who you know will be non-tendered after the season instead of a top prospect?

This organization is fucked.

Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but Jerry abuses the privilege.

Over?

Probably. Quick, how far out were they on this date in ‘69 and ’73? Fernando will get plenty of at bats. I don’t need him batting against David huff in aaa until September call ups.

Er, nothing?

I’m pretty sure, nothing.

by Jack Str on Aug 8, 2010 3:26 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah

I know. I prefer to be optimistic. Still, I will tell you what ‘69 and ’73 have to do with 2010. Sure, only twice in almost 50 years. And they don’t call them the miracle Mets for nothing. But teams DO come back from way out in August. And sometimes the teams that do so are full of young guys who don’t know any better, like the ’69 team, and keeps playing when things seem hopeless.

There’s little sense in my mind of just giving up on seasons, although today I’d agree, it’s hopeles. But Fernando platooning with the dominant share of the platoon starting early August instead of coming up in September? Do we really think that’s sacrificing all that much of the future for now? I am talking more his development than whatever it means for his service time. I just don’t think him getting only a few at-bats against lefty relievers over the next 3 weeks instead of 30 at-bats against scrub lefties in AAA is all that much to get our knickers twisted in a bunch about.

They aren’t out of it, Frenchy can hit lefties still, F! has been picking it up and may be able to hit righties, the Mets have some injuries, let’s see how he does.

The Phils could have packed it in 3 weeks ago, Chase down, now Ryan down, slumping, and they instead got hot. It really doesn’t take much. The Braves don’t impress me as a juggernaut.

Granted, almost nothing they’ve done inspires thoughts they can go on a streak. But as a fan i just would like to watch Martinez, Thole, tejeda, Davis and see what the future may hold. Acknowledging they have rushed everyone, especially Mejia, too much, but a chance to jumpstart the team in early to late August doesn’t seem like it’s too much of a danger as far as damaging them for the future. And as far as playing Frenchy against lefties, that’s fine by me. He can do it, he’s here for now, and I’d still like the team to win.

Perhaps not optimal, but I don’t think it’s a big deal to worry all that much about.

They just

can’t get out their own way. Why would you bring up a top prospect to just platoon him? Sigh

Is the sun going to come up tomorrow?

Thankfully, Francoeur is supposedly going to ask Minaya for a trade

Hopefully that gets done ASAP, because it is supremely stupid to limit ABs for a top prospect

There is no hope.... there is no future....there is only GRISSIONZ

The 2010 Mets- Hey, we may suck, but what did you expect?

by Syler on Aug 7, 2010 5:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Excellent point.

Manuel could manage while he’s sleeping, and some other guy could manage while Jerry’s awake.

This just might work.

I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
In order to raise extra capital, the Mets have explored signing Kosuke Fukudome to a minor league contract with an invitation to Spring Training (replete with curiously high uniform number).
