Mets 1, Phillies 0: Santana Bests Hamels, Francoeur Contributes Positively

Johan Santana might not have outpitched Cole Hamels tonight -- Santana struck out six while walking three, Hamels struck out 11 while walking none -- but he bested him where it counts. A solo home run by Jeff Francoeur in the seventh inning accounted for the only run in a 1-0 Mets victory which, following Alex Cora's release prior to the game, might only have been the second best thing to happen to the club today.

Poem by Howard Megdal

In second straight game, Johan inspires bliss
By returning to inducing the swing and a miss
Francoeur homers, making his vultures restless
Though we're happy tonight that Cora's gone vestless

Johan Was Huge

Best game he pitched this year, and he is having a good year overall, so that is saying something. Nothing to complain about tonight. I think the message sent early today was heard by all.

I know

I know —-Frenchie follows up his first row bandbox HR with one of the worst, and dumbest at-bats a player could have, which is why he must go.

Nice win tonight.

I have a feeling tomorrow we won’t be saying the same…that Hday34 guy is pretty tough.

The odds

of winning the lottery are the same every day for all sets of numbers. No one is actually due for a win over the course of time. We scored one run tonight and have Halladay tomorrow.

Off-topic, but Mejia looked solid tonight for Bingo.

This from Trenton Thunder beat writer Mike Ashmore:

Mejia out after 4 1/3. 70 pitches, 43 strikes. Looked good. 3 hits, 2 walks, 4 strikeouts.

I was there to witness it as well. Mejia got into a few rough patches, including having runners at the corners at one point, but managed to escape them all. If Jerry needed a reminder that Jenrry is a starter and not a reliever, this was it.

In case anyone didn’t notice, he was put on a limited pitch count. Kunz got the win.

Kunz didn't blow it?

I think the only reason we have him still is his name.

Only gave up one run, I believe.

Also, it would’ve been funnier if he had a “t” thrown in there somewhere.

So that no more space can be wasted and instead, we can all talk about how K-Rod got lucky in that 8th.

Too many balls

Cora may be gone, but Jerryball is alive and well

Can’t get enough of Pagan sacrifice bunting. Good stuff

Despite that idiocy, this was a really fun game to watch.

that was a head scratcher, even wayne hagin didnt understand

most consistent hitter up, base stealer at 1B, guy struggling while coming back from injury on deck – um bunt!

I just want to hear Jerry explain his reasoning (even though it would probably make my head explode)

Is Reyes not fast enough to steal a base? Is Pagan not good enough to get a hit?

The answer to both is an obvious no. So what would possess someone to do that?

Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but Jerry abuses the privilege.

Apocolypse

With one game left in this “MUST WIN SERIES’” stretch (that has left us out of contention), the only two wins have come on Frenchy homers.

God save our planet.

Pelfrey, Niese, Dickey, Santana sure sounds like a great playoff rotation, don't it? Let's Go Mets!

by ZaBlanc on Aug 8, 2010 12:48 AM EDT reply actions

well we won

if we can win Dickey vs Hday1 at least we can take solace in the fact that we can win a sereis on the road vs the Phils

Hey, wait! I'm having one of those things. You know? A headache with pictures?

Cat-like reflexes

On Santana, Manuel said: "A guy really has to make an excellent bunt for him not to get it. He’s a cat when it comes to fielding his position."

Tejada made a huge difference in this one

If Cora or Castillo is at 2B, we might not win this game. He can’t hit yet, but he has to be our everyday 2B.

Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but Jerry abuses the privilege.

by AnthonyR on Aug 8, 2010 1:02 AM EDT reply actions

The complete opposite : Sonnen was beating Silva's azz all night for all 5 rounds...

…and then he got careless and got caught in an triangle choke with just under 2 minutes remaining in the final round.

Sonnen was leading all the scorecards for all 5 rounds….

IN other words :

Sonnen Loss = Mets-style Loss. LOL.

Wow

That’s surprising.

Can Jerry stop playing Castillo now?

sure, Ruben Tejada can’t hit a lick, but at least he can play solid D. and we all know Defense helps win games!…except for maybe Frenchy’s “invaluable” glove and arm. ok Dickey, let’s make the Phillies look like they have no balls today.

lets play spoilers and take the phillies out of contention!

by feslenraster on Aug 8, 2010 7:59 AM EDT reply actions

I would disagree with you

if castillo could hit. But he can’t. This team won a game tonight when they scored one run. They are brutal on the offense. We had 5 auto outs in the lineup tonight. I count Hessman, who is a stiff and has been for a decade. And of course, one of those auto outs hit a HR. Pure luck. An oustanding game on the mound. You cannot depend on that every night. We are doomed.

by jdon on Aug 8, 2010 8:13 AM EDT up reply actions

this

Everyone thinks we need pitching and should trade away Beltran, Bay, Reyes, etc for some reason.

We need all the offense we can get.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

(click to embiggen)
Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
