Open Thread: Mets vs Braves, 9/1/2010
New York Mets at Atlanta Braves, Sep 1, 2010 7:10 PM EDT
The Duda abides! Lucas Duda makes his major league debut tonight, starting in left field. Get excited. New month, newish players and the Braves have gone 122-87 (.584 win %) since trading Jeff Francoeur. Maybe the Mets will be similarly energized. Here's some Morricone to get you pumped up:

I like the Perricone....
The Mets lineup tonight could be Good, Bad, Ugly, Good, Bad, Ugly, Good Bad, Ugly, just reorganized a bit.
Looking forward to the Dude's start

meaningful september games!
If you bet money on them, that is.
So if the game scheduled for Sept 1 had been the only meaningful game left
would that have satisfied the doofi>?
Prediction for Duda tonight
1 for 3 with a 2b and a BB.

the braves would pitch around him though
to get to Tejada, thanks to Jerry’s lineup.
It's a very Bisonesque lineup right now
all we need is Nick to fill in somewhere.

Trading Wright and Reyes (disclaimer: God forbid)
If the Mets decide to commit blasphemy and trade one of them I would hope they keep Reyes. Just to be clear I really hope that both retire as Mets.
I'd prefer they keep Wright still
if they had to trade one. I’m not against a trade per se, if the price is right. But the offer better be pretty damn irresistable. (I’d also like to see them both as Mets for life)

we have a pretty good expectation
that David will play 155 games each year
yea thats why I love the guy
he’s got a bit of adjusting to do with is swing, but we’ll have a competent hitting coach soon (or at least one other than hojo) so I see him bouncing back as far as his K/BB rates go. Don’t get me wrong I love reyes, but if we had to lose one, I think he’d be the guy to move.
Hey, wait! I'm having one of those things. You know? A headache with pictures?
by KeithsMoustache on Sep 1, 2010 7:21 PM EDT up reply actions
he just has to stick with what worked. drop the hands dow, shorten the swing
and focus on driving good fatballs to center and right center. He is not real wuick in there. Problem is, even the smallest slump, like everyone has, and he is fooling around.
yeah
the solution is simple, getting him to do it naturally is hard

It's in David's head Lack of confidence is the worst thing an athlete
can go through and I hope David can overcome it.The Mets collapsing around him the last few years certainly does not help.
by Putnan Prince on Sep 1, 2010 10:07 PM EDT up reply actions
I dislike agitated posters so I do not call for trading anyone
but if a certain someone were to be traded I would not be upset. And, Beltran’s career in the NL is finished.
I completely agree unfortunately
I will miss his awesome swing and (former) outfield play but the Mets should look at what they could get for him.
by TDJ on Sep 1, 2010 7:21 PM EDT up reply actions
sadly probably not much
he hasn’t helped his stock much. We’re probably better off holding onto him since we’d have to eat a lot of salary most likely if we moved him.

I don't think I can deal with Duda and Arias on this team
bring back Frenchy please
mediocrity thy name is Wilpon- jdon
so if rookie's must bat 7th and 2nd base must bat 2nd

Where's the button to report error?
I’d be hitting that over and over again.
...I told you guys we would be losers in the frenchy trade
Jerry’s going to put Arias in the line up every night while one of Duda/Carter sits
mediocrity thy name is Wilpon- jdon
i am amazed that we got the guy DFAed for Cora for Frenchy
so we got someone strictly worse than a guy we released in a trade for another player who’s also awful. I guess we’ve upgraded by having one less awful player?

by HELLYEAHGARYOAK on Sep 1, 2010 7:34 PM EDT up reply actions
He's not playing...
I think Gina Bean was being sarcastic.
GKR was saying Jerry wanted to play Arias in the outfield instead of one
of Carter/Duda but only refrained because he’s rusty (since he hasn’t played in a few weeks since he was so bad he was fired)
mediocrity thy name is Wilpon- jdon
Isnt this more of an indictment of Jerry being
an awful manager?
by aparkermarshall on Sep 1, 2010 7:37 PM EDT up reply actions
He's awful manager because he would seriously think of starting organizational

Almonte played semi-pro baseball in the summer of 2009. As of 2010, Almonte had returned to the Bronx, where he was serving as a volunteer assistant coach for his high school alma mater’s baseball team.9 At that time, he was reportedly no longer with his wife, though he would not discuss details of the relationship. Almonte indicated an intent to return to semi-pro baseball that summer, after the end of the school year, but said that he no longer held expectations of some day playing in the Major Leagues.8

He probably won’t fetch much in a trade and the Mets would end up paying a lot of his salary. Move him to a corner. I think he can put up like a .830 OPS and play average corner OF defense.

My favorite Carter story is from the Expos locker room the day after he was traded.
They pinned a NY media puff piece to the bulletin board and underlined every occurrence of “me” and “I.”
The 80s...
When teams engaged in literary criticism.
really thou screw them they got really lucky in 86 say Buckner plays good D and Calvin Sheradi
doesn’t throw that wild pitch what do you have. A bunch of underachievers. They failed in 1987 and 1988 they overlooked the dodgers. Imagine if they dodn’t win in 86 this franchise would be a laughing stock. Not that its not now but for the past 4 decades
How old are you?
Please. First of all, the game was tied when Buckner made his error. Second, that team was just a joy to watch.
30, Sorry I love this team and bleed orange and blue sometimes I get frustrated
My man was Gary Carter love the 86 team. But I don’t like how these guys Keith and Ron putting down these teams in the past. Even thou they are right. But they act like they are all high and mighty. When they had the same flaws. Just think about it if the mets did’nt win in 86. What an Epic collapse of talent that should of been a dynasty.
Yes, but the difference between good teams and great teams...
Is that for great teams the 5th wide receiver catches a 4th down pass, that was thrown off-balance with defensive linemen surrounding the quarterback, against his helmet. Those great moments of luck are usually predicated by a hell of a lot of talent in the first place.
you gotta admitt they underacheived by not winning another WS especially in 1988
Just imagine thou if the stars were not allianed in game 6. We would be a total franchise failure.
Take a look at this....
http://www.flipflopflyin.com/flipflopflyball/info-86mets.html
It shows the composition of the 88 team compared to 86. Notice the deletions of Knight, Mitchell, Orosco, McDowell etc. Those were big losses.
yes they were huge but why did they rush to move mitchell and Knight
they were 2 of the dumbest moves ever. If they kept the team intact who know Carter might have Jeter like rings
Carter and Mex were also on the decline after 86...
If I’m not mistaken in 88 Carter was terrible for much of the season.
im kinda sick oif the 86 bunch
i wish someone more current could take the torch……

I read that as
He wants Arias in the HOF

he said he can play the infield and outfield
and he considered playing him over one of Duda/Carter tonight

Well hopefully when Jerry is fired in the off season
our new manager can recognize talent and keep him in buffalo
That can't be right, can it? Please tell us you're kidding.
Arias has no appearances in the OF in pro ball. Is Manuel trying to make sure he never receives and offer to manage again? Has the ghost of Samuel Becket taken over his soul?
Bat shit crazy

The comeback
IS ON!!!!! Oh, and hop off Francoeur’s genitalia announcers. It’s sickening.
Is the sun going to come up tomorrow?
lolol
i love how now he’s a defensive manimal and the real problem was the rest of the offense.
mediocrity thy name is Wilpon- jdon
The stupid thing about this trade discussion is it wasn't even really a trade
Omar said “You want him you can have him. Just send me anybody so I can say I got something in return”
I'm ready to ASPLODE

Jerry
“Um well Arias isn’t very good at his natural position so we’re going to put him somewhere else”
jerry did not want to play him out there because
he has not played in 6 weeks. of course he is out there. Jerry said it; ergo, he did not mean it.
Jerry realized after he said it
that if he didn’t play tonight he would not have played in 6 weeks and 1 day which is actually longer than 6 weeks and therefore even worse
yes
1st game 9-3
2nd game 9-2
tonight I’m thinking 9-1
Its a four game series so 9-0 tomorrow to complete the series
That’s something to pull for.

Jerry is officially
the dumbest manager in the Major Leagues. Dusty is no where near the level Manuel is residing.

Good.
Hurricanes are frightening. Being surrounded by folks who have been through them = scary.
You know they recommend a gallon of water per person per day? So if things might be messed up for 3 days and you have 3 people in your house, that’s 9 gallons.
reminds me of Andrew way back in the day

I was in Kill Devil Hills in NC last week
And the news stations were all broadcasting on location from there today, about the hurricane. Perfect timing, weather was awesom last week.

Oh is that where you disappeared off to?
My uncle lives on the intercoastal in Wilminton NC. Maybe I should give him a call.
Usually by the time they get to the NY area they’re no quite as territying.

north carolinas getting evacuated
wtf @ hurricanes coming up here.
mediocrity thy name is Wilpon- jdon
The outer banks are being evacuated
they always are hit by hurricanes
by aparkermarshall on Sep 1, 2010 9:35 PM EDT up reply actions
The Keys and the Outer Banks are similar...
The only 2 places in the country where the Red Cross evacuates too. Basically the sandbar connection. Why they stay in Galveston I can’t figure out/
That's fucking criminal.
Your first major league game and with your team down 4 to 1 you get yanked from LF in favor of a utility infielder.
This is Manuel’s way of letting Minaya know that Duda doesn’t have a chance in hell of establishing himself as long as Manuel is the manager. That stupid, fucking ratbastard.
Tell me about it.
Arias has never played a game in the OF in the majors.
...and has never played a game in the OF in the minors, either.
Duda’s got to be feeling like shite right about now. Imagine having your ML debut spoiled with shit like this, by being replaced with a UI who has never played a single game at your position.
What a scumbag.
Manuel

Holy crap.
Nats within 5. See what a good brawl will do?
Never. Not once.
So to get back at Minaya Manuel is pissing all over Duda’s first game. Wow.
Did he really claim Arias could play the OF? I mean, so can I, but
there’s that whole “quality” thing to think about…
Bell and Wagner in top 5 in saves this year
Why can’t we get guys like that?
yeah it's not like we have a lefty masher in AAA or anything...

Hi, guys.
We called Arias Spider-Man. I honestly can’t even remember why, but that’s what he is. Here is a picture for you that almost makes me miss him.

I have no idea what fappo is.
It sounds like a variation of an Italian Ice. “I’d like a lemon fappo, please.”
