Joe Torre Leaving Dodgers At Year's End
Shocking news out of Babylon today, as it was announced that sleepy-eyed manager Joe Torre will step down after the season with bench coach and not-quite-Keith-Hernandez Don Mattingly in line to take over. Just when I thought there wasn't a worse candidate than Wally Backman to manage the 2011 Mets, Joe Torre hits the open market.

No.
Not in a million f***ing years no. And I’m the guy who would not go nuclear if we got Backman.
Here's the Mets new computer manager...it's state of the art!

Yeah what is that thing?
I hadn’t noticed it, but once you mentioned it I lol’d.
Maybe they use it to play Pole Position?

Pole Position was well before Off Road (am I wrong about that?)
I remember Pole Position in my local deli on Henry Street in the mid 80s.

I actually know what it is...
What I wrote above was a joke. Computers were designed in the 40s to measure trajectories of bombs. The wheel was meant to replicate the design of the wheels used on warships and by the artillery to raise or lower the angle of their guns. That wheel was meant to replicate the firing angle of such guns.

I voted for "Someone else"
Not because I have someone else in mind, but because the other human options are either not feasible (Bobby-V), or laughable (everyone else).
If there's ever a riot at Citi Field and Oliver Perez was the starter, I started the riot.
Damn it
There was an easy Nick Evans joke in there.

Absolutely not on Torre
I tolerated having to watch a lot of talentless assholes wear a Mets uniform over the years, but he would be too much.

I voted for Wally because I want to see what happens
sort of like Mets manager as sociological experiment
Yeah, me too
plus I think he’ll hold players accountable.

I’ve seen more than a few posts and scribes saying the Mets play with no heart, no fire. I feel like that would be something Wally could help with. He’d also be in a position where he’d likely have to accept a “1 strike and you’re out” type of contract.
This isn't football
Baseball players can’t play that much harder than they already on a regular basis. They field the ball, and they hit the ball. Getting more effort wouldn’t result in anything. We need more talent, period.
There is no hope.... there is no future....there is only GRISSIONZ
The 2010 Mets- Hey, we may suck, but what did you expect?
Baseball is psychological
Baseball players don’t go into slumps because of a lack of effort or talent. The environment in which they play can effect this, and the manager helps to create that environment.
Meh
I don’t think a manager has any control over how a lineup performs on a given night. His job is just to put the best players on the field and not let the clubhouse get out of control. But I don’t think environment has anything to do with it. Managers have failed being angry, over the top, like Lou Piniella the last few years, and managers have failed being quite and reserved, like Willie. Talent is really what it boils down to.
There is no hope.... there is no future....there is only GRISSIONZ
The 2010 Mets- Hey, we may suck, but what did you expect?
Yessir
Players may go into psychological slumps, but I don’t believe it has anything to do with “environment” a manager creates.
by EricAColucci on Sep 17, 2010 10:18 PM EDT up reply actions
Once again disagree....
While it may not be based on an overall “environment” as created by a manager, suggestions and prods by a manager are very important. Why was Torborg bad? Because there was an environment where BS and losing were implicitly ok. Same thing with Jerry. When I read that HoJo took the players to task for playing cards before games I was shocked. This was a team in a slump and they were focused on card games. I bet on the team plane everyone is listening to iPods. When I started in my first law firm, I was told that I was not allowed to listen to an iPod in my office. I thought “what kind of BS is this.” But later I got the point. My football coach used to yell at us on the team bus that we were not allowed to talk about anything but the upcoming game, and to get in the right mode for that. A system that does not emphasize conditions necessary to win will cause losses. It’s that simple. Same thing in a system where a guy is going through a psychological slump and there is no one who can help him out of it. Managing a team—like managing a business—involves far more than deciding who to play. It involves creating conditions where those who are playing can maximize their abilities. Otherwise a computer could really do the manager’s job.
by MookieTheCat on Sep 17, 2010 10:52 PM EDT up reply actions
I disagree completely.
Guys can mail it in just like in football, and perhaps even worse because a fly ball can turn into a double if a guy isn’t focused. While I agree that guys can’t play that much harder, the key is maintaining focus. It seems like in the late innings this year’s club is already thinking about where they want to go for dinner rather than the game. Wally would not allow that.
by MookieTheCat on Sep 17, 2010 5:48 PM EDT up reply actions
I don't think a guy will loaf it on a play, unless he's a douche like Gary Sheffield.
And in any case, it’s much, much rarer in baseball than in football, and even at that, a lot of it can be subjective.
As for focus….again, I think it’ boils down to talent. The Mets lineup has been terrible all season, and bad lineups don’t make comebacks often. Whereas, a lineup like the Phillies is far more talented and thus can do it more often.
There is no hope.... there is no future....there is only GRISSIONZ
The 2010 Mets- Hey, we may suck, but what did you expect?
Yeah but I think it's safe to say
most of these guys are playing to their talent level, these guys just suck.

I voted for Wally as well.
I watched him mold the players that became The White Sox World Series team up close at AA Birmingham. The man can flat out manage baseball teams.

Seriously....
Post more on this. I like Wally and a major criticism of him on here is that no one has seen him deal with folks above A ball. What did he do in AA that translated into good major leaguers?

He handled his young arms and batters very well.
From what I remember he was Mike Scioscia-esque when it came to strategy, and his players would run through a wall for him.

I voted "Someone else"
I have no interest in Manuel returning and am shocked to see 4 votes for him as of now. Has to be someone’s idea of humor, or his family members.
I don’t want either Valentine or Torre for many separate reasons but the one common reason is I simply have a personal preference for not recycling former-Met managers.
Regarding Backman I’m just not sold. I think either more MiLB managing at a higher level or some MLB coaching staff job might be a good idea.
The computer sounds appealing but I’m just getting over my fear of math thanks to all of your help but I’m just not ready to take such a big step.
heres why you dont vote computer
it will get pissed off at the underperforming roster, become self aware, become aware of the futility of human ball players, and then become SKYNET!

whos voting for manuel?
be honest here. i chose valentine for nostalgic reasons
I like Ike, I hate Jerry
Are you guys all too young to actually remember Valentine?
I think going backwards is seldom a good thing, but if you absolutely have to have an ex-Mets’ manager as the next Mets’ manager, why not the best living ex-Mets’ manager — Davey Johnson?
Admittedly, I have very little memory of some of those guys who lasted less than two seasons, but Valentine is the worst of the ones I do remember. Art Howe was better.
Joe Torre is a great manager when he has great players, a good manager when he has good players, and a bad manager when he has bad players. I’d prefer to shoot a little higher than that.
Umm Bobby Valentine was the mets manager from mid 1996-2002.
I think you need some math classes, Curtis3331.
Art Howe was a terrible manager and no chance he was better than Valentine (yes I do remember his time as Mets manager) and Torre is terrible manager whether he has great, good or bad players. It doesn’t matter if you’re team is good or bad—bad bullpen management is still bad bullpen management. Just ask Ramiro Mendoza or Scott Proctor.
