With all the speculation regarding who may or may not replace Omar Minaya, or whether Omar will be the next GM at all, my mind naturally came to wonder who might be the Mets worst choice for GM. I was wondering about this earlier today. When I closed my eyes, I saw this thing, a sign, I saw this name in bright blue neon lights with a purple outline. And this name was so bright and so sharp that the sign - it just blows up because the name is so powerful... It says, "Leonard Kyle Dykstra."
Let's go through Lenny's pros and cons here:
Pros: (i) Member of 1986 team, (ii) unquestionable grission machine, (iii) led the team in dirty uniforms (T-Wally Backman), (iv) Wild Boy (pad drum solo!), and (v) the clubhouse would never be short on magazines for overpaid stars to read while on the DL.
Cons: (i) Member of 1986 team, (ii) unquestionable grission machine, (iii) taught HoJo the meaning of "aggression," (iv) natural enemy of Billy Beane, (v) was once deemed the value equivalent of one Juan Samuel less one Roger McDowell, and (vi) in the long run, Juan Samuel probably showed far greater value, at least if you work under the assumption that "one should always think the opposite of any advice given by Jim Cramer."
Lenny was upset at having been made into a Philly, and over time many Mets fans and an even greater number of penny stock and man of leisure-type magazine investors were upset about his leaving the Mets as well. On the other hand, Lenny is one of the few baseball men who can claim to have wrecked his car after John Kruk's bachelor party, been named in the Mitchell Report, have been accused of lying in a bankruptcy proceeding (accused, to my knowledge not proven), and for some reason to have the latitude and longitude of his home listed in his Wikipedia entry, not to mention the financial ruins he has left in his wake, along with beer bottles, dog poop and "other unmentionables" (see Wiki entry). These are the kind of feats that leave me with a sense of amazement about the man.
Now before anyone gets all high and mighty on me, let me make clear that I loved watching Lenny play ball, and wish him nothing but the best in getting his life back on track. But in terms of a worse candidate for GM, I think he takes the cake. I'm interested in your thoughts. Enjoy the poll below. Should you choose "Other" please let us know who you might have in mind.
