Mets Community Prospect List 2010: #17
Welcome to the 2nd Annual Amazin' Avenue Mets Community Prospect List. Every poll will include eight candidates for the next spot on the list, as well as a separate group of testers. Testers will be rotated into polls with each new installation, replacing each poll's winner and any name that's not getting votes. After a few rounds, if a candidate on the ballot receives a decidedly low vote total , they'll be replaced on the ballot by a tester.
After the poll, Juan Urbina (finally) is the choice for the #16 prospect in the Mets' system with 63% of the votes. To replace him, Brad Holt has made his triumphant return to the ballot. Akeel Morris been added to testers. To recap:

I have to admit I don't know much about Matz
But why all the love for a guy coming off of TJ surgery? Was his previous upside that awesome?

i have to be honest
there is a strong case to be made for brad holt here. obviously he was terrible this season so going by results he’s well below guys like rodriguez and campbell but the key is that the stuff that had him selected in the supplemental first round is still there, the velocity is still there, from all accounts he isn’t hurt, it’s all just a matter of command. and no, the guy couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn this season but in the past he’s never had control issues to this extent.
it isn’t completely crazy to hope for a mechanical adjustment to get him back on track, it was just a year ago that he was having good success against these same level hitters in st. lucie, flashing major league caliber stuff. too soon to completely give up on a kid altogether if he’s still throwing with that same stuff. and at this point on the list where any of these guys needs a good break or two to pan out, holt’s risk of developing long-term steve blass/rick ankiel disorder is balanced out by his stuff and the resulting much higher ceiling than nearly every other guy left on the list.

That's why I lobbied him to be the next voter on the last poll.

Holt apparently still struggling
I don’t have a link, but I read that Holt was still only around 90 mph in instructs, still not looking good right now. If that’s the case, I wonder if he really ranks over some of these other guys with potential, he’s been struggling now for a year and a half.
Holt’s biggest selling point was a good fastball. If he’s not throwing harder than Armando Rodriguez, Zach Dotson, or Yohan Almonte, I wonder if he has much reason to rank above them. And then you’ve got younger hard throwers Akeel Morris and Domingo Tapia.
if thats true
then you’re right, he should drop out of the top 20. but i spoke with sources about as close to the situation as possible and i was assured that he was hitting the mid-90’s at various points throughout the season including in september.
his AFL stint should be enlightening as they always provide top notch pitch fx data.

true
Mets seem to be sending a lot of hard throwers to the AFL who aren’t really prepared for that level of competition; all guys having trouble throwing strikes. Maybe just to give them a chance to work with Ricky Bones there?
[Carson, Holt, Niesen, and Carr]
natural bias?
Against anyone named “Armando”?
I voted for ArmRod
but I guess I can understand putting Matz there…assuming he comes back 100% from TJ surgery and pitches. as for Holt, he regressed pretty awful in 2010, hopefully there is no underlying injury issue and he can bounce back in 2011. I would place him on top 30, but not top 20.

I can see this round as up for grabs between any of Rodriguez/Holt/Matz.

My vote goes to Marte
He still young and projectable. I know he repeated A this year but his numbers are much better than his previous season. All the other players on the list are either succeeding against younger competition or struggling/injured.
