The Amazin' Avenue "R.A. Dickey Face" Contest

When the story of the 2010 Mets is written, the chapter on R.A. Dickey will be one of the few must-reads. His pitching has been great, sure, and his bat has been surprisingly potent, especially during a season where the team regularly struggled to score more than a few runs. What's more, the Dickey headline puns were a seemingly endless source of material for us, and when they finally ran their course, we still had the "Dickey face", which is the gift that keeps on giving.

And so it continues to give, in the form of a $100 gift card to MLB.com courtesy of State Farm, who is promoting its Go-To-Bat online home run derby game to benefit charity. Check it out here. You can read more about it at the bottom of this post.

The Contest

Simple: Create the best R.A. Dickey PhotoShop/MS Paint/whatever image. Think you've got the skills? Time to prove it. We will select our five favorite Dickey image FanShots and the Amazin' Avenue community will select a winner.

The Rules

You can read the official rules here, but this is the gist:

  1. You must use one of the following images as the "Dickey" part of the entry. These images are licensed for use only for this contest and exclusively on Amazin' Avenue. That means you can't use them for anything else and you can't post them on other websites. If you use a Dickey photo other than one provided here your entry will not count. I can't be any clearer than that.
  2. The rest of the entry image can come from wherever you want -- screen capture, movie poster, etc. -- so long as you don't use anyone else's professional photography. That means no paparazzi or professional sports photos.
  3. Your entry must be a FanShot. You can read more about posting FanShots here.
  4. Since FanShots reduce the image size to fit web standards, you must include a link to the full-size image in the FanShot itself or in the FanShot comments. You can utilize a free image-hosting service like Flickr or Photobucket to upload the full-size photo and link to it from your FanShot.
  5. If you have previously posted a Dickey FanShot you can resubmit it using one of the Dickey photos provided below.
  6. Only one entry per person will be accepted, so if you have several ideas just choose the best one. If you submit multiple entries we will just use your first one.

The Images

Per the rules above, one of the following three licensed R.A. Dickey images must be used in your entry. Click the link to view and download each full-size image.

Image #1 (Facing left, 1.4 MB)
Image #2 (Facing right, 901 KB)
Image #3 (Facing forward, 2 MB)

You can also download the three images in one .zip file (4.2 MB)

Ready... Set... Dickey!

The contest is live now and will run until 5pm EDT next Wednesday, September 15, 2010. The community voting will be held from the 20th through the 22nd. So get to it!

---

The following is provided by State Farm, the sponsor of this contest.

State Farm has teamed up with MLB to give people a chance to attend the 2010 World Series, while making a difference for their favorite charity by "going to bat" for them!

It’s easy to do - Fans just visit www.statefarm.com/gotobat, play the online Home Run Derby game for the charity they would like to "go to bat" for and once a week, for ten weeks, State Farm will select a winner and their charity. The winner’s charity will receive a weekly donation ($100 for every home run hit that week in MLB) and the winner themselves will receive a trip for two the 2010 World Series.

Paintbrush

Works just like MSPaint, but is more user friendly. I agree that Photoshop is cheating, but this should be countered by a points category for sheer unprofessionalism and awfulness. You cannot replicate the MSPaint/Paintbrush awfulness with Photoshop without a lot of work.

Exactly

There’s no reason to believe that “more professional” = “better”

maybe there should be a caption on the contest FanPosts…

to avoid any confusion from the previous users FanPosts of R.A. Dickey images.

FanShots

People can caption them “Dickey Contest” or whatever, but we’ll know which ones to include because the FanShot date must be between 9am today and 5pm on 9/15. Anything submitted outside that window won’t be counted.

This is fantastic

When asked Thursday if he had entered the World Cup pool, Carter said: "No. I need to hit more home runs."

Does this mean we can use images of say, Omar?

I hopes no news happens

because the fanshots area will be solid Dickey, for well more than 4 hours.

So are we allowed to edit the Dickey face?

I know that in at least one of mine, I turned it slightly so that the Dickey face would cover the original picture’s head/face.

It woulnd't allow me to put the picture from Flickr

in the actual Fanshot so I put a link to it on Flickr under the Fanshot Char A. Dickey

You need to view the Flickr photo in a separate page

i.e., right-click the image from Flickr and copy the URL, then use that as the Image FanShot URL.

Trying to download a Dickey picture into a smaller version

so that I could be able to use it for Photoshop. How do I go about this?

Would a comic strip be acceptable?

I’m thinking of putting multiple pictures in the Fanshot.

Trying to believe is my full-time occupation.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
