With the acquisitions of Young and Capuano, it seems like the Mets have made most of their significant off-season moves, so I thought it would be a good time to play around with a hypothetical 25-man roster. Below is a roster I put together based on my own preferences, but I thought it would be a good place to start some debate. Plus, I like looking at a roster without Luis Castillo and Oliver Perez. So here goes:
This one seems like a given, unless Mike Nickeas makes a push for a backup spot, but I doubt they signed Paulino not to put him on the big-league roster.
Obviously a lot of possibilities here. I've jettisoned Castillo and hope that's a reality. I've put Emaus on the roster both because he's got upside and as a Rule V draftee, if he's not on the ML roster, we lose him. I'd envision 2B as a platoon of Murphy (assuming he's healthy and can hack it defensively) and either Turner or Emaus, with the other of the 2 righties being the all-purpose reserve IF. A lot of attention has been given to Chin-Lung Hu, but frankly, with Reyes at SS, I don't think the Mets have a great need for a good-field, no-hit backup middle IF. Turner has played some SS in the minors and I'd rather have him as the backup SS due to his bat; I don't think losing Hu due to his lack of options would be such a big deal - most likely, he'd clear waivers.
I've got Pridie and Evans making the team due to (1) lack of options and (2) upside, particularly Pridie's defense and Evans's bat. This would mean no spot for Scott Hairston or Willie Harris unless the Mets were to go with a 6-man pen. My bench as constructed is admittedly a bit righty-heavy, particularly on days when Murphy would start at 2B. That could be rectified a bit if, say, Emaus or Turner were named the everyday 2B. I'd personally love to see Lucas Duda too, but his development would be wasted on the bench and I'd rather he play everyday at AAA, and be the first guy brought up to start if a corner OF were to go on the DL.
If Young and Capuano are healthy, they'll most likely be on the team, with Gee sent to AAA for more seasoning.
This is probably the most volatile area on the team; other than Rodriguez, Parnell, and probably Carrasco, I don't know if anyone's a lock here. Acosta's out of options, and his upside combined with that is probably enough to warrant him getting a spot. Tankersley's probably our LOOGY - although someone like Mike O'Connor could make it too. I've put Buchholz on the roster due to his past performance, and Misch due to his lack of options, left-handedness, and ability to be the long man and a spot starter if necessary - basically, the Darren Oliver role. Pedro Beato's also a dark horse given his upside and his status as a Rule V draftee - he could displace Buchholz, perhaps. Boof Bonser's probably in the picture as well, although I'd imagine that Misch would get the nod for the long man because of the option situation.
Anyway, that's my roster - pending, of course, any subsequent moves. Again, notice the lack of Castillo or Ollie. Comments? Suggestions?
