2010 – 4.9 WAR in 151 games ($19.6 million)
YEAAAAAHH!
It was a good deal for everyone
IIRC he was subject to arbitration, and his ask was slightly above this. Is that right? Either way this is very good news.

Davis Wright Bay
And Pagan for sure being a unit for at least the next 2 years means we should be relatively strong offensively. What will happen with Beltran and Reyes no one knows but this year would be a great one for a Duda or Fmart to try to win confidence for a cornerspot in 2012 or late this year if they move Beltran and at least keep Reyes with a patchwork starting staff at around 125 million. I think this team can hold it down enough to be entertaining this year and then see the Matt Harvey, Mejia, Mets in ’12.

If I see Harvey anywhere near the bigs in '12
I’m gonna flip out. I understand peoples enthusiasm but he hasn’t even stepped on a professional minor league mound yet.

Players who are good at everything but don't have a signature skill
often get stiffed in the arb process. Excellent deal for the Mets. I’m a little surprised Pagan settled.
Did Niese get his contract settled for 2011?
2010 Mets: 81-81 Pythagorean record. 656 Runs Scored, 652 Runs Allowed.
Damn You, Manuelllllllllllllllllllllll!!!
He's only got 1+ years of service time.
He’s an indentured servant for 2011 and 2012.

Why 2 years?
You’re not saving any money signing him for 2 years since that’d only cover his last 2 seasons of arbitration. Teams sign guys to multi year contracts (like Dickey) so that they can cover the first year or so of free agency. The Mets would’ve had to lock him in for 3 years to do that. That probably wouldn’t be a terrible thing but why take the risk that 2010 was somehow a fluke or that he gets hurt and misses a lot of time in 2011/2012?

Well, we could conceivably save a bit of money by signing him for two years
If you give him a second year now, then you’re on the hook if he falls apart, but if he plays like a star this year, he doesn’t get a huge arbitration raise.
That's true but
the difference between saving money on his last arbitration year and saving money on his first free agent year is likely to be pretty big. I think the point is to keep the flexibility since there still are some questions about Pagan (not that I’m questioning his 2010 but why lock yourself in when you don’t have to unless you’re absolutely sure about the player).
