Joe McEwing Named Manager Of White Sox Triple-A Club
Former Met "Super" Joe McEwing was recently named manager of the Charlotte Knights, the Triple-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox. He was that team's hitting coach in 2008 before managing the High-A Salem Dash the past two seasons.
McEwing is often remembered for hitting remarkably well against future Hall of Famer Randy Johnson, mostly by people with shabby memories. McEwing hit a rather pedestrian .250/.244/.432 in 46 plate appearances against Johnson.

One of the signs of getting old is players you remember watching as players getting jobs as managers right?
-Ceetar, the Optimistic Mets Fan
This is worst the the 80s Mets getting jobs, because I was a kid for that squad.
I was drinking legally when Joe was an active player.
Snap!
I was an alcoholic watching that squad play too!
See you at the AA meetings!

I was thinking the same thing
I’ll be in NY a few weeks from now until mid Feb and was kinda thinking…

I'm down, I live in the area so I'm around.
Always looking for excuses to drink.
Yeah this is a good idea
Eric? If it should be an informal thing, does someone want to organize via FanShot? I haven’t paid way too much for a drink in a long time, so a NY bar sounds about right.

Wait til you get to the stage
when the sons of players you remeber get jobs as managers.
What's the score, boys?
What did Bugs Bunny do?
What's with the Carrot League baseball today?
Bad move
The only reason they did this is because of his past connection with the Mets. This guy wouldn’t be a minor league manager without that.

Pssssst
Just a joke on all those who yell about Backman, Teufel etc. only having their managing/coaching jobs because of past association with the Mets. Not serious.

I might be a bit humor-challenged today.
Hah
I feel for you man. That’s not a fun way to spend a day.

… and thus a legend is born.
I would rather exhort the fact that he was 5-10 against Kenny Rogers pptooo

in Super Joe's defense
a .432 SLG is significantly higher than Randy Johnson’s career SLG against, and Joe was doing at a time when Johnson was at his absolute peak of dominance.
I know, small sample size, the numbers still weren’t good, and Joe wasn’t good against any pitcher, really, but there’s a sliver of truth to this reputation.

And really, it's just poor
I think, to diminish the (small, granted) accomplishments of baseball’s less gifted. I don’t have any particular fondness for Super Joe, but why begrudge him a job that baseball’s stars, with their free agent-era pay, don’t want anymore? He probably knows quite a bit about playing the game, and he could be a good coach. Yay for him.
Good players rarely make good coaches anyways.
Give me former back up catchers and utility infielders any day over All Stars.
I think it depends on why a guy was a good player and the team being coached. John Olerud was a smart player who from what I’ve heard got along well with guys and was willing to help younger players out. He might be great for a young team needing to get acclimated to the big league or minor leaguers working their way up.

I had a geometry teacher in high school that coached Super Joe in youth basketball in I think either Bristol or Fairless Hills.
Proud supporter of a New York baseball team and a Boston football team. Yeah, deal with it!

I’d like to thank you, Eric, for taking time out from kicking puppies to take a jab at Super Joe. What else do you have planned for today? Going into a pediatric cancer ward and yelling “THERE IS NO SANTA CLAUSE!”?
Did someone steal their DVDs?
Because there very well may be a copy of Santa Clause in the media room.
