The Mets Killers Team: First Base
For a full explanation of this little project, see my introductory post here.
The Reader's Digest version: I'm working on a piece for the upcoming Amazin Avenue Annual about an imaginary team made up solely of Mets Killers, to see how such a team would fare when forced to play a full schedule against teams other than the Mets.
Today's poll concerns first basemen--some otherworldly, some merely great, and others classic Met Killers (i.e., HOF level against the Mets and no one else). Who will make the cut? Cast your vote now!
Poll away!

I was tempted to vote Pujols because he has killed us so much in recent history
but I went with Howard.
There is no hope.... there is no future....there is only GRISSIONZ
The 2011 Mets- Rock bottom: We haven't reached it yet
Why
do they insist on pitching to Pujols or cantu’/
Pujols is not a Mets killer . .
He is just great at baseball. His numbers are across the board worse against the Mets than his overall career numbers.
How are you defining Met killer?
A guy that normally sucks and is only good against the Mets? Or a guy that mashes the ball, and is not afraid to also mash it against the Mets.
The original post gave us this guideline:
“…a Mets Killer is often (but not always) a thoroughly mediocre player against anyone but the Mets.”
In two words
Willie Harris.

yeah he gets my vote when we hit outfielders

I was at that Cardinals game in 08/04/09 at Citi
Our bullpen fell apart, and Pujols had that grand slam in the 10th. I had to vote Pujols. That moment might have traumatized me for life.
heilman game
I was at the game in ’08 when Manuel burned through his bullpen and was stuck with Heilman into his roughly 60s in pitch count and he caved and gave up a Pujols bomb.
But flat Mets kilers..probably Cantu. We’ve had Howard’s kryptonite for years.

Howard's Kryptonite
now pitches for the Yankees.
He's worst against Ollie
in 29 PAs: .120/.207/.240 1 HR, 14 Ks
This is the main reason why I can never take Ryan Howard seriously. If you can’t hit Oliver Perez, you’re not a star. Plain and simple.
Carter, hand me my thinking grenades!
Ollie just happened to have that weird slurve thing working
on those particular days. It was pretty tough to hit when he threw it in the general direction of the plate
which is why five years from now when his contract is up he'll be the next best LOOGY
Damn you, sir!
Kicking knowledge in the face.
It goes against my general definition of the term "Mets Killer"
but I voted for Pujols, because I’ve seen him in person 3 times (all vs. the Mets), and in those 3 games, he’s hit 4 homers. Yikes.
2009 Did Not Happen

Pujols, it is usually Utley that kills us on teh Phils
Any task BIG or small, Do it well or not at all
I just don't understand the methodology
If someone is an everyone-killer, I don’t think he can correctly be called a Met killer. That’s it’s own category, and it’s decidedly something different than just people who are freakishly great at baseball, full stop.
Cauntu, because he's not nearly as good against other teams as he is against us
although i haven’t checked his splits so it might just feel that way. Howard gave us that strikeout looking to end the Phils playoffs, and his contract will destroy the phils payroll for years to come, so he might actually be a Met helper, and Pujols is just too fucking good at baseball. He’s a pitcher killer.
Hey, wait! I'm having one of those things. You know? A headache with pictures?
Cantu has a .730 career OPS against us
Below his career average

just feels worse than it is i guess

Puljos
hands down.
He kills us every time.
Howard kills us not so much.
John Franco HOF 2011
Watch game 6 again
Without him there would have been no reason for Mookie to the up there.

I was 8
And a few years ago my dad found a VHS tape of that on eBay. He bought it, and I watched it a few times. I wish he hadn’t lost it since, as it would make a tremendous FanPost. But the game had about 938409314 twists and turns before than ending.

It's one of two games that I've watched all the way through after the fact
I have both on DVD: Game 6, and the bloody sock game.

my dad was at the game.
unless i find a way to get to a mets world series game no-sporting event i ever go to will be equal in comparison. Well unless i attend the elusive/mythical mets No hitter game.
I hate Philadelphia so much.
In like 30 years, I'll be able to tell kids,
“I saw the great Albert Pujols play”, just like how my dad always says, “I got to see the great Johnny Bench play”. That’s cool.

I voted Cantu
Honestly I don’t remember Howard being all that good against us, and Pujols isn’t a Met-killer, he’s just an all-time great hitter who continues as such against us.
Can Cantu Cando the CanCan?
John Franco (shoulda been) HOF 2011
Gaby Sanchez could do no wrong last season.
Against the Mets, he batted .397 / .429. / .662 with an OPS of 1.090, with 6 walks, 15 RBIs and 13 runs scored. Yikes.
Against the Braves, Sanchez hit .208 / .278 / .389 / .677 and against the Phils he hit .270 / .303 / .460 . / 763
That was his rookie season too.
Yeah, I think the voters are missing the point here.
We should’ve had career numbers vs the Mets somewhere in each post or something. Pujols is slightly less great than he is normally against us. He’s an everyone killer.
Speaking of which...
which sites have that info. I couldn’t find anything on B-R. I was curious about this and the Joe McEwing comment to see if Tommy Hutton really did own Seaver the way everyone said.
What's the score, boys?
What did Bugs Bunny do?
What's with the Carrot League baseball today?
I know B-R does
And I think Fangraphs too. It’s hard sometimes to find the link to “Splits” but once you do team by team performance is there.
