Paul Maholm a possible option?
His record seems to be the same result of Dickey's record and that is lack of run support. He possibly could be a option if Chris Young does not come back or just to get more starting pitching in general.

He's going to cost more money than I'd be comfortable giving out to a pitcher of his record with our tight budget
He’s probably going to get somewhere in the neighborhood of $10 million dollars or so, for a few years. If our budget was a little higher, he’d be the guy I pursue (assuming the Pirates don’t exercise their option, which I doubt they do). But it’s not, and after addressing all the other issues and needs of the team comes first (ie, signing Jose Reyes and figuring out who the closer is going to be, if we delve into the FA pool), I don’t think we’re going to necessarily have the luxury of dropping someone who’s going to cost around that much. For half that price or so, there are other starters who can be as good.

You think he'll cost that much?
He’s coming off of a shoulder injury that forced him to miss the last month plus of the season and the Pirates declining his option has to set off some red flags in some teams minds. I’m not saying that he won’t get a lot of money but at the same time, it’s not a guarantee that he will either.

Yeah
It’s rare you see someone lose you on a team option, and somehow make equal or more money per year with the next team he signs with. It could happen, but he’d have to show a clean bill of health for that to take place.
The Pirates are a team with a very limited budget
They might not think that he’s worth ~$10 million. The Yankees, on the other hand, might see ~$10 million dollars as a drop in the bucket, considering he theoretically will give them 175 or so good to decent innings.
Oliver Perez was given a 3/$36 million dollar contract (which was, at the time, more or less what the market called for) in 2009 putting up one good and one less-than-impressive seasons with the team. Perez and Maholm are different beasts, but…

Oliver Perez was also given that deal by an inept moron
who bid against himself because Scott Boras told him other teams were interested when it was reported that no other teams were interested.
I wouldn’t compare any contract to LOLlie’s…except maybe Luis Castillo’s. Or Bay.

My point was more that a guy if a guy like Oliver Perez with very little positive track record can get $12 million a year
a pitcher with an actual track record of some decency as Maholm is can also make around $10 million dollars this off-season.

Ollie still had the "potential" argument, though.
Basically, the whole lefties develop late/next Sandy Koufax/he got married thing. That contract was partially based on prior performance but mostly based on hope of improvement, basically the opposite of what Ollie ended up doing. Maholm isn’t really like Perez in that way…he is what he is. Nobody’s to give Maholm extra money based on the potential to become an ace. I imagine they’re most likely going to pay him to be a middling 2 WAR per season innings eater.

Looking at the peripherals,
there are some similarities to Mike Pelfrey in a few ways. Around a 5ish K/9, he walks a few less than Pelf, pushing those rates a bit under 3 but the main difference seems to be that he just stopped giving up home runs in 2009. Pretty interesting that from 06-08, he gave up homers on 12% of fly balls and then that suddenly decreased in 09 to around 7%, where it’s been the last 3 seasons. He’s also more of a groundball pitcher than Pelf, though that rate has been decreasing the last few years too (down to a career low 49.9% in ’11).
Looks like he’d be an upgrade on Pelfrey, assuming all of those rates stay the same and he’s probably around Capuano’s equal if all those rates stay the same (Cap strikes out more batters but his biggest problem is the home run ball). It’ll all depend on the price…I’d probably prefer Maholm over Capuano if I’m looking at a 2 year deal just because of age and injury history, though depending on the market, Maholm may end up being too expensive. And he’s an upgrade over Pelf but my question would be whether it’s worth it to pay an extra few million to Maholm for a marginal half win to a win or so, instead of just paying Pelf 5 million or Livan Hernandez less money for similar production. For a team that’s not going to be all that competitive, it’s not worth it to pay more for a marginal win or so, meaning that unless you can get Maholm at or around 5 million, it may make more sense to go after someone else (unless you think that Maholm could fetch something better than Pelf as trade bait in the future, which could be a consideration as well).

he is a good option
I am not sure what kind of $$$ he may look for, but in reality he should come at a decent price. He is definately a goo dpitcher who could easily have a better career record with a good team.
Any task BIG or small, Do it well or not at all
Every time I hear Paul Maholm
I think someone is talking about Pat Mahomes. I was about to freak out against this article, but now it’s not so bad.

I honestly think that at $2-5M why not
he’s be an upgrade over Chris Capuano, but not by much. he was never really that effective of a pitcher until this season. I’d actually keep Big Pelf over signing Paul Malholm. (did I just write that?)

If Santana can pitch next season
Who would you move for Maholm to be #3?
2012 National League Wild Card Champion New York Mets
That's a big if
but then he’d be our #4 which wouldn’t be terrible because he and Capuano (if we resign him) are nearly identical pitchers in terms of performance. I could deal with a rotation that could possibly have two 2 WAR players at the bottom of it.
I guess i didn’t realize how terrible Pelfrey was last season. He would be the odd man out, but I’m not sure how useful it would be to dump him then turn around and add Maholm.
Mistermet covered it pretty well a few posts above this one. It’s going to be a sad season if Maholm or Cappy end up being our #3 because we all want Johan to succeed. I’m just being very cautious about my expectations from him because I don’t want a big letdown.
Kicking knowledge in the face.
We're not resigning Capuano

Much rather go for a Jeff Francis-type.

I think they should offer Chris Young another deal
He’s cheap, and I have fun betting how many starts he will make before he hits the DL.

I'd bet zero
because considering the surgery he had, he’s likely to start the year on the DL.

Years ago,Mets used to have a BB team in the off-season that played for charities.Young would fit right in with
his 6’10 frame.Could see Jose’ at the point and Duda at power forward.Murph bombing 3 pointers and being taken out for his weak defense.

I keep hearing that Young does want to come back
…and for the minimum but that all depends if he is fully healed by spring training

Is Daniel Herrera coming back?
Herrera needs to relieve him, even if neither are any good it will at least confuse the hell out of the batters.
