by Russ on Oct 28, 2011 8:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes and yes

The key is whether poachers are in the area. If elephants have never seen another elephant killed by a human, they are generally docile and curious. If, as where I was, there are poachers, they can be very hostile. They signaled a lot that they were displeased with our presence, and we gave them a wide berth. Remember also that elephants live a very long time and, as the saying goes, never forget. So a poacher decades ago can lead to a pissed off elephant today.

Not many

Elephants are smart. Even when they were pissed at us, when we made a retreat for show, they seemed to recognize that one with ill intentions would not do that. I’ve had run ins with elephants in the wild about 5 times now (both now and the last time I lived in Africa) and their sense of reason continues ti impress me.

It's not dysentary

That’s the runs with blood, and is very dangerous. I have a doctor who I can call whenever, but it’s good ettiquette to not call them unless you’re really sick, which I’m not sure I am. If you called the doc whenever you got the runs here, you’d be on the phone half the time. But yeah, if necessary I can get medical attention.

That's exactly the point though

If everyone stayed healthy we would be a x win team is a fallacy here. With still thin upper minors, crappy utility players, and a bad training staff, overcoming likely adversity is unlikely.

Means we better win 50 games in April and May to make it to the postseason.

And I have a great counterargument in 2 words to .500+ play: Willie Harris.

by Wright of passage on Oct 28, 2011 8:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I sure hope so

And I hope he starts ballet and yoga, and esp tae kwon do. His muscles are wound too tight. He needs to work on situational balance and he’ll be a 150 game guy.

But sadly I think that some team needing an attendance boost will pay way too much for a fan pleaser who just won the batting title. Jose is a fun guy and by signing a guy who just won the batting title you insulate yourself, as a GM, from a lot of owner, casual fan, and MSM criticism. When I used to interview lawyer prospects it was known that if you recommend a guy from Harvard with a great GPA, even if the interview raised red flags, if he turned out to be a dud you would be insulated from criticism. If you recommended a guy from a lower tier school who had a great interview and he turned out to be a dud, you caught heat. Same principle.

I'm mostly jumping on the bandwagon to be honest

But the few times that I see him manage I am occasionally baffled by in game decisions and some of his lineups (such as Theriot today). Maybe it just proves that managers don’t have much of an impact in game, or maybe I’m way off base. Are you a TLR fan?

This is likely going to post twice.

Except the other day, where the media had a field day with him b/c of dugout phone-gate.

That and those in the media that blamed Pujols prima dona attitude for ditching the media after game 2 on LaRussa’s supposedly allowing King Albert to rule the clubhouse, instead of the other way around.

Found it..........LOL
Winner: Derek Cheater
Buy a Jeter jersey, cross out the “J” and write “CH” over it. Then buy a bunch of fake syringes and stick them into various parts of your body. And carry a big fake bottle that says “STEROIDS” on it, but fill it with Altoids. Then, walk around all night introducing yourself as “Derek Cheater.” This is my favorite idea because not only is it funny but Jeter has such a good reputation, and it’s so preposterous that he’d ever cheat — really, he’s one of the top-3 picks in any “Which Guy From the ‘90s and ’00s Definitely Didn’t Cheat” draft — that your costume would get a wide range of reactions ranging from “perplexed” to “truly ticked off,” and people might even yell at you and stuff. Also, you’ll definitely have your choice of romantic suitors because half the guys there will want to have hate sex with the girl brazen enough to wear a “Derek Cheater” costume to a New York Halloween party. Best of luck.

And apparently ZOMG good

Per everything I’ve read about McCarver and Buck. Speaking of, reading Joe Pos’s article and the comments I think it nailed my view of McCarver. He was a great announcer in the 80s with the Mets, but what happened? My guess is that he stopped being with the team on the plane, in the hotel, etc., and his ability suffered for it. He and Kiner were just terrific for a while, and though I’m trying to reach back 20+ years here, I think it’s the everyday interaction that made Tim do his job well. Kinda similar to how Ron got slammed doing TBS games, but is a gem on SNY.

Dr. J (that’s his legit name)

I am writing this as a just in case formality. Since I will be taking the exam at the learning center I will not be able to turn in my case 3 paper or Quan journal with it. I will probably be able to turn in my quan journal when I return the test to the Econ office but the case 3 is a different story. I had been planning to email it to you this morning but, at least on south campus the Internet (and the Internet for my room mates) has been down for the last 13 hours and obviously that makes printing equally impossible. In the interest of full disclosure I’m about 70% certain this Internet failure has something to do with sky net becoming sentient last April 11th and Siri is somehow involved and Steve Jobs was the only barrier between them and world domination so I may or may not be bunkering down for the end times after the test, I am not prepared for AI gone wrong but I’ve been preparing for a zombie invasion since the supposed rapture of, May 21st, if not then I will try to see if the Internet it up again so I can send my case 3.

in my defense I wrote it before I had taken my adderral. I am an extremely impulsive and non cognizant of social standards sans adderral.

FYI folks:

The Mets are expected to allow other teams to set the market for Jose Reyes this offseason, according to Andy Martino of the New York Daily News.
“Jose is not going to be a quick process,” said one source. “The fan base would love for it to be that way, but a quick process would mean that he will not be a Met. Let him go do the dance, and see how (other teams) value him. Why should we set the market?” With the Mets expecting to cut payroll, club officials have made it clear that if Reyes leaves, 22-year-old Ruben Tejada will replace him. Several reports have speculated that the Nationals, Marlins and Angels could become heavy bidders and that the Mets are unwilling to match Carl Crawford money (six or seven years, $130 million-$140 million) if that’s what the market dictates.

Fucking Fred

with that stupid “Crawford money” line. Way to be asshole.

As to this article, same shit we already knew a while back. I think he’ll stay for something like 5/95 with a 6th year option, but I’m an optimistic motherfucker so my opinion might not be realistic.

What's that about?

by Brian. on Oct 28, 2011 11:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Ah, that's a pretty good strategy actually.

The Mets shouldn’t be bidding early on…if the other teams are also weary of going over 5 years, the Mets can swoop in and grab him. No reason to start the bidding or piss Reyes off with a bid that’s too low.

Yeah,

I saw Martino on DNL at 5pm today talking about this.

I have no problem with Sandy letting the market set itself. They’re not going to sign him in the exclusive window unless they blow him away with an offer. And that’s not going to happen – not Sandy’s MO. They’ve probably got a cutoff in years and $$ they’re willing to go and if they’re around the ballpark of all other offers, there’s a chance. If not, well….sigh….

I understand that

My point is that it would be stupid for him to demand that notwithstanding the fact that some team even if not the Cards would offer him that.

A lesson in never giving up. Gotta respect the Cards for that.

In a sense yeah

But I’m sure he’s happy to be away from LaRussa & his bullshit. Plus, he’s in a situation in Toronto where his team is on the rise & he can be a major contributor to that.

Actually, Texas lost BECAUSE

of MLB’s ridiculous All-Star Game rule re home field advantage for the WS. The Rangers should have had home field advantage. And while they would properly not make such an excuse, this rule needs to be redacted.

The team with the best record at the end of the year gets home field advantage. Very simple.

It’s not THAT sickening because the Phillies and Braves are in our Division. I’m still a big fan of NL baseball and hate the DH. So if you like baseball without the DH, then you shouldn’t be “sickened” by this Series.
