Thoughts On Bobby Valentine, From Those Familiar - Over the Monster
Red Sox fans are generally dismayed by the hiring of Bobby Valentine, largely due to his unenlightened on-air persona on ESPN. However, a cursory look through the NY Times archive turns up plenty of evidence that Valentine knows more than he lets on.

It's weird
All my friends who are Red Sox fans are really excited about the hire. I don’t know anything about that Sox blog, but I do know I would hate to be judged based on the comments on Metsblog.
Glad to have Bobby V back in the game.
That site is really confirming Boston fan stereotypes
It’s like they can’t get enough of the wailing and the rending of garments. But I thought SB Nation blogs were the smart ones?
Smarter than he lets on? I think so
I still like him and think it’s a great move for Boston… despite that awful “ESPN persona”. He’s crazy . . . crazy like a fox.
"I dunno. I never smoked any Astroturf. "

I hope Bobby brings all his quirky defensive plays.
I always loved having the first basemen screen the runner instead of the traditional bag cover.
The outrage in Boston over the hire stunned me
I had no idea where it was coming from. I saw a comment on that article along the lines of “thanks, this was great and informative, but i still think it’s a bad hire”. With no elaboration. It seems like people are just determined to hate him no matter what.
