Davis/Duda Discussion
Why do we prefer Ike Davis at first and Duda in the outfield?
I understand that Davis is a better first baseman, but he'd likely be a MUCH better outfielder. Knowing Davis played relief pitcher in college he likely has a much better arm, it's clear he has more mobility and I believe he played a great deal of outfield in college. Would just rather put the worse defender at first and maximize our outfield defense.

Me, personally,
I’d rather have now guy who is mediocre (Duda in right) and one guy who is above average (Ike at 1st) than two guys who are mediocre (Duda’s defense at 1st + Ike out of position in the OF).

Elite and medicore > mediocre and mediocre.
And there is at least anecdotal evidence which suggests an elite defensive 1B can make your other IF’ers better.

In response to both comments above -
I don’t see Duda as mediocre, I see him as below average. I think mediocre is wishful thinking especially considering his defensive numbers in right last year.
His plus bat negates his subpar defense, and vice versa
Making him net mediocre all around.
And, I mean mediocre in a general “non-scientific” sense.

His offense
has superstar potential. Low Ks, monster power, clearly able to hit good pitching and shitty pitching alike. I think with mediocre defense at first he’s a 3-4 WAR player, and mediocre defense in the OF Davis is a 3-5 WAR player.
His offense has superstar potential.
easy there, cowboy.

I don’t recall what he did after we traded him.
Victor Diaz
struck out at an incredibly high clip. Lucas Duda at around league average.
He was bad in his first full year playing the position.
The more he plays there, the more comfortable he’ll get.

Duda
has played outfield before. He had played well over 100 games there professionally before 2011. And he was still horrendous.
It's misleading to only quote the number of games he's played in the OF.
He barely played the OF until 2010:
2007: (A-) 28
2008: (A) 9
2009: (AA) 42
2010: (AA) 35 (AAA) 60
2011 (AAA) 34
His OF experience in the minors is equivalent to less than 2 seasons, and it’s worth noting that he also had to play in a different home field each year. He was still primarily a 1B until 2010

He also played Outfield primarily
in college.
Adam Dunn says hai
Seriously speaking though, watching Duda play last year sure didn’t lead to the conclusion that his problem was a lack of comfort. It looked more like a lack of mobility which won’t get any better with time.

Pretty sure Ike is much slower
and Duda didn’t look strong at first last season, and I would rather have a sure hand at first and a liability in right than vice versa
Ike Davis in the OF
mean less flippy-catches.
Less awesome.

Wait
And Duda isn’t?!
Now, kids, being eaten by a crocodile is just like going to sleep; in giant blender.
The unfortunate fact is we have never seen Ike Davis play in the outfield ever
So we have next to know ability to predict how he would fare. It’s an interesting exercise though. We can theorize that he might be decent based on his sure-handedness in the infield and his strong arm (used to pitch in college).
However, there is so much more to outfield defense than that. Does he read the ball well off of the bat? Does he take good routes? What’s his range, etc.? We don’t know these things. Perhaps our coaching staff does.
He did play some outfield in college, which means he has at least some experience post-puberty, but he has not played a single inning at the position as a professional.
Duda and Davis are both first basemen.
Neither has the speed, body type, or agility to be even an adequate corner outfielder. We should be trading Duda for pitching or an actual outfielder (or agitating for the NL to add a DH).
Maybe Duda's D will improve (somewhat) with the dimension changes in RF
The more he plays in RF, I think it can be expected that he improves defensively. The coaching staff should also be able to improve his D a little right? Regardless, leave Duda/Davis at RF/1B respectively. I think we should lobby to have as many inter league games as possible so Duda can DH.
I think that Duda's defense will definitely improve
I don’t think that he’ll be league average, but I do think his negative UZR can get to the mid-single digits. To me, that would be a total win.

I think his defense will improve when he replaces Bay.
Which, hopefully, will be before the ASG.

Hopefully we can get it done
And then, hopefully, Kirk can play right.
"Amazing strength, amazing power - he can grind the dust out of the bat. He will be great, super even wonderful. Now, if he can only learn to catch a fly ball."
-Casey Stengel on Lucas Duda
Kirk can play RF
He just probably doesn’t have the bat for a corner spot.

The real problem is that Duda should be a LF
And we have someone there.

Why not put both guys in the corners of the outfield, and trade for another first baseman like Trumbo?

What are we trading for Trumbo?
And how many ways can I think of to say “no”?
