Should the Mets get a free agent catcher?
Alderson has said that the mets are going to look internally for their catcher in 2012. He is trying to use that money for some outfielders and utility infielders. Though, if they had enough cash what is the best choice for a free agent catcher? MLB trade rumors list the available free agent catchers. Among some are Kelly Shoppach and Ivan Rodriguez. Shoppach is one of the best choices, as he had 11 homers for the Rays last season. Meanwhile, posting a .994 fieding% and threw out 40% of base stealers in 2011. Also with a 6 RDRSyr ( amount of runs player is worth defensively in 1,200 innings), he is moderately fine defensively and decent in offense as well if he can keep his avg. up.

We're talking about guys who'll probably come in on 1-year, $1-3M kind of deals here
You don’t need to be a playoff contender to justify that kind of investment.
You also don't need to be a contender to want someone better than Mike Nickeas
who is not part of your future
There is no hope.... there is no future....there is only BLUE WALLS.

Guys can also serve as chips to trade, in theory
Plus, what you said: Just because we aren’t going to win the World Series doesn’t mean we shouldn’t minimize the suck.

except Rodriguez won't come within the $1-3M range
and as much as we AA fans truly value them, neither will the other old fogies listed

Even if you are punting 2012
Someone like Ivan Rodriguez can be a mentor for Josh Thole and the pitching staff. That could have an effect for years to come.

I chose Shoppach, but someone like Castro would be nice too.
Henry Blanco dark horse
Wouldn't Henry Blanco be a white horse?
Not that it matters, he’s been off the market for a while now.
I'll take some Kelly Shoppach

I wouldn't mind Varitek

What does he bring beside "veteran presence" though?
He’s bad behind the plate (bad at framing pitches, bad at throwing out runners) and he’s had negative Batting Runs the last 4 years running with no reason for it to improve since he is 39 years old.

and not being Mike Nickeas.
Last time I checked the numbers, I think I concluded he hit LHP decently as well.
So does Kelly Shoppach, except he's also good behind the plate.
Varitek: 103 wRC+ vLHP in 2011, 121 wRC+ career vLHP
Shoppach: 124 wRC+ vLHP in 2011, 144 wRC+ career vLHP

I preferred Shoppach to Varitek
by quite a bit, but Varitek would be a decent option.
Didn't they have to trade for a catcher they had just let go
because they needed someone to catch Wakefield?

Yup.
Doug Mirabelli always caught Wakefield. They had to re-acquire him at a steep cost because Varitek and Josh Bard (the guy who replaced Mirabelli) couldn’t catch the knuckleball.

I think it was George Kottaras who couldn't catch the knuckler.
Bard was the one they traded to get Mirabelli back, along with Cla Meredith.

I might try to go lower, since his bat is pretty pitiful
I mean, the past two years, he’s hitting .186/.288/.341. Go back a third year, and he’s hitting .200/.312/.370. He’s being projected to hit .227/.318/.431 next year. Defense is good, but that’s black hole offense.

Shoppach strikes out a TON, too.
He’s never K’d under 30% in his big league career and last year, struck out 31.2% of the time. His only positive offensively is his power and he walks a good amount but I agree…that offense is rough. The defensive edge makes him worthwhile, though.

Even sub-Mendoza line, he's been putting up consistently positive WARs
And that’s with only quantifying a fraction of his defensive skills as a C.
Plus, if we can platoon him really strictly against lefties, his hitting will look better.
Check out his 3-year splits
860 ops in 252 ABs vs. lefties
550 ops in 398 ABs vs righties
Thole
469 ops in 74 ABs vs lefties
739 ops in 521 ABs vs righties
MASN is now reporting Jesus Flores could be non-tendered
Link here. He’s raking in the Winter Leagues and isn’t excited about backing up Wilson Ramos. For $800k I’d be happy to bring him in and tell him it’s an open competition with Thole.
sounds good to me

no I think Thole showed improvement and will only get better
Any task BIG or small, Do it well or not at all
Sure
but Thole can’t catch every game / is as susceptible to possible injury as anyone else. And while Nickeas seems like a swell guy, I would be happy to never see him play baseball again.

They probably can't afford one
But a cheap alternative would be to bring back Jesus Flores who is very unhappy in Washington and the Nats would probably want very little in return
Shoppach just signed for 1.35 + incentives
with the red sox. I bet the Mets offered as much, he probably didn’t want to play here to be the righty part of a platoon for a losing team.
Stay
away from Snyder’s bad back in my opinion.

No, the Mets are fine at backup catcher
What they need is a quality starting catcher who is not past his prime.

Down 2 in the bottom of the ninth?
Lets Bring in Willie Harris!
Which is why he's included in the poll.
