Mets Fill Out the Bisons Roster
Claimed Pirates RHP Jeremy Hefner off waivers and signed C Lucas May and LHP Garrett Olson.
Probably AAA depth, though Hefner could be a fifth starter type. He has average stuff, but he's put together a decent MiLB statistical record outside of last year's performance in the hitter-friendly PCL. He is also an old Padres farmhand and that worked out okay with Allan Dykstra.
UPDATE: Hefner is on the 40 man, giving the Mets 42 players on the roster. Expect an additional non-tender/outright along with Paulino.

so who gets cut along with Paulino?
Schwinden?
Carrasco?
Pelfrey?

Probably Carrasco
The Mets have an awful lot of arms on their 40 man right now. Baxter and Satin have outside shots of getting cut, as well. I suppose their could be a surprise non-tender in there, too. Maybe Acosta.

All these minor league deals are automatically added to the 40 man?

I'm hoping/leaning more towards Baxter
Carrasco, I want to see in Spring Training before we dump him. Maybe 2011 was a fluke.

One problem
That would leave the Mets with 7 OFs on the 40 man.
Torres/Bay/Duda- starters
Lagares/Puello- unlikely to contribute in 2012
Kirk/F!- injury concerns.
You could certainly put F! on the major league roster, but he’s limited to a corner, and no guarantee he stays healthy for even 100 games. The organization seems to want to give Kirk another half season at AAA to get healthy. I assume they will have to sign a couple more outfielders anyway, but that would just require more shuffling unless they are NRIs.
Sadly, I think Satin is the more likely cut, given the Mets depth at 2B/3B on the 40.

There's some guy you're missing, I forgot his name.
I think he finally disappeared though, I thought we’d find him eventually.

May is also mildy intriguing
doesn’t look like he has any arm at all from his caught stealing numbers, but there’s some pop. Looks like he can hit better than Nickeas, but then again, most can.

Hefner
Hefner actually is a pretty intriguing prospect. He was San Diego´s # 15 prospect prior to the 2011 season according to Baseball America after a strong season at AA.
His stuff isn´t anything special with a sinking fastball in the 90 mph range, a solid curve & change, but he apparently has good command and has always posted pretty high strikeout totals. While his 2011 totals at AAA aren´t eye-popping, he did post them in the hitter-friendly PCL. With San Diego having a lot of prospects to protect as well, Hefner got DFAd from the 40-man roster and claimed by Pittsburgh who then DFAd him again when they made a Rule V selection. Pretty sure, DePodesta & Alderson are happy to bring in one of their former SD pupils into the Mets system.
All in all, I´d assume Hefner is pretty close to being ready for a shot in the majors. His profile looks somewhat similar to that of Dillon Gee´s and he is probably more advanced than Chris Schwinden or Collin McHugh. At this point, Hefner probably would be 1st in line for a rotation gig if anything goes wrong with the top 5.
