C'mon Man.
That’s too bad, I was hoping the Mets would get him. He would be a great platoon with Thole
Before we say we could have signed him for around the same money, he probably would want to play for a contender.
The fact that he was drafted and debuted for the Red Sox could have played a role too.

You can DFA players to make room if you sign others, so roster space was not an issue.

Carrasco, Stinson, Armando Rodriguez.
There’s three guys who are probably on the bubble at this point.

Why might we want to DFA Rodriguez?
His numbers generally look good in the Minors. He’s only in Advanced A Ball, but…

Because his upside is likely only to be a reliever.
The minor league numbers are good but they don’t really match up with his stuff and he doesn’t seem to have a shot to be a big league starter. I’d take the chance DFA’ing him if they need to add somebody else to the 40 man.

Carrasco
Is someone that should’ve went over Baxter, IMO. Maybe they are going to re-sign Baxter on a minor league deal, but I felt they didn’t give themselves enough time to see what he could do.
Carrasco, on the other hand, was putrid last season. He may get better, but with all the RP that are on the 40 man now, he was highly expendable already.
Stinson and Rodriguez are still young enough that I can see why you would hold on to them.
Maybe you can help me: Can someone explain to me the love Baxter generally gets?
I don’t get it. Looking at his Minor League numbers, I see a generic corner outfielder who has an otherwise decent .281/.362/.458 at the higher levels of the Minors, but outside of that, nothing. Doesn’t have major power to make us raise our eyebrows, doesn’t have a large degree of positional versatility, scouting reports don’t say he plays amazing defense, he isn’t a speed demon on the basepaths…What am I missing?

He was the default OF bench in the 25-roster.
Out of the outfielders currently available in the 40-roster, we have now F-Mart and Kirk (or Lagares/Puello) to be bench OF in the active roster.
Stat wise, he posted a .301/.382/.517 line (.326 BABIP) in his last full season in AAA (552 PA in 2010), with a nice K:BB ratio.
Other than that, you can say the “Whitestone’s Own” or the general ineptitude from other players who are still on the roster.

Wasn't saying he was great
But they only just got him in August and then they cut him off the 40 man roster this week. I thought they should hold on to him just for the simple fact that they didn’t give themselves enough time to see what he could for the team. You never what one BABIP-driven season could do for the team. Not to mention the team is thin on OFs on the 40 man roster.
They will need to add a third catcher to the 40
at some point this offseason

Few ideas to fill out remaining spots on the roster
Sign Eli Whiteside at catcher; righty platoon with Thole and has decent numbers.
Trade Murphy to Detroit for Andy Dirks
Sign Ryan Theriot to be our starting 2B
Sign Andy Sonnanstine to compete for the #5 job or long man out of the bullpen if we let Carrasco go.
I wouldn't make that Murphy trade
Much rather have him start at second than trading him for a 4th Ofer. Theriot might not be a bad pick up as a utility guy. I’d much prefer him over Jack Wilson.

bold prediction
Mike Nickeas has a .240/.320/.740 slash line as a backup catcher

What is that?
He goes like 5 for 16, but all five hits are homers?

I'd like to hope that it is
50 for 160 with 50 homers
That sounds better

I don't get the fawning over Shoppach that I've seen here lately
I mean he’s basically a slight upgrade over Paulino, and sandy seems to think that spending that type of money on a backup catcher is not worth the investment.
Paulino career wOBA vs. leftys – .373
Shoppach career wOBA vs L – .389
a slight upgrade but not one to get all excited over

Paulion vs. Shoppach
I think the “fawning” over Shoppach begins with the point that everyone pretty much knew Paulino was gone this offseason. So now it becomes Shoppach vs. Nickeas. And I think that one is a no brainer. Plus, Shoppach – I believe – is a better defensive catcher than either Thole or Paulino. So you get a slight upgrade with the bat and also an upgrade with the glove.
I woud've paid 6-700K for him
1.3 is way too much
