I mean,
I’m sure plenty of fans will laugh over this…but the guy makes for a damn good international scout. That Padres’ farm system might have more MLB-ready talent than the Padres for the next couple years.

Dickey be Praised!
I give Omar credit.
If I was being paid over $1 million annually to sit at home, I’d probably hold off on looking for my next job until the checks stopped coming.
They already have to suffer those horrible uniforms, and now this?
May Dickey have mercy on their souls…

Well, not exactly.
Josh Byrnes is the GM. Though perhaps if we dangle a certain Canadian Left Fielder, Omar would try to get Byrnes to make a run at him.

The best part is that we almost brought in Byrnes as the GM. If only…

Really surprised Byrnes who is a forward thinker
would hire Omar.
Save Jenrry Mejia!
2012 Amazin' Avenue Offseason Plan: 2nd place
baseball ops is different from GM at least
I don’t think he’ll be quite the catastrophe at his new position that he was with that much power to directly impact the team at his fingertips

The article says he will
evaluate trade, draft, and international options. The only things that he seems adept at is identifying guys from small schools and the occasional IFA find.

Regarding Omar's IFA prowess:
I’ve seen people cite this as Omar’s strength, especially when he first came on board, and people were touting a secondary benefit of signing Pedro as increased visibility in the Caribbean, but I don’t see anything of substance. We have, of note, Fernando Martinez, Jenrry Mejia and Wilmer Flores, but their presence in the organization isn’t anything particularly special- all teams have scouting in the islands, and sign bunches of kids from down there, many of whom are good at playing baseball. For all the Martinez’ and Mejia’s and Flores’, there also might be more Ubaldo Jimenez fuck ups, as well.

I definitely agree
which is why I said occasional. I’d also add Puello, Marte, and Rodriguez to that list – not that it makes it super impressive.

yeah but he's at least not incompetent at it like he was with FA signings
I’m not advocating him as a genius by any measure, but he’s not totally out of his element with low level scouting like he clearly was with contract negotiations.

To give some credit to Omar, the 2007 IFA class was pretty ridiculous.
Jenrry Mejia, Jeurys Familia, Jordany Valdespin, Cesar Puello, Wilmer Flores, Jefry Marte among others. That’s like the majority of many Mets Top 10 prospects lists right there all acquired in one season.
Now that’s enough credit for Omar.

According to Adam Rubin
“Whatever salary Omar Minaya gets from the #Padres will be deducted from the roughly $1.1 million Mets owe ex-GM in 2012.”
GUYS. WE CAN SIGN REYES NOW.
Omar
Happy for Omar. While Omar Minaya has proven that he´s not exactly qualified to handle a MLB team payroll and especially hand out free agent contracts on his own, he is apparenly a very humble and likeable person who´ll go a long way procuring International talent for the Padres. From what I´ve heard, he´s among the least arrogant major league executives in Baseball. And that´s both at the time he was the “taste of town” in 2005/2006 and when he was a lame duck in 2010. And while being nice doesn´t win games, it may convince the parents of a 16-year-old kid from Santa Domingo to let their son sign with the Padres instead of someone else if money is close to the same.
And while his overall tenure with the Mets is a very mixed bag, pretty much the entire 2012 and quite possibly 2013 rosters – at least most players under age 28 – will be made up of players that were procured under Omar´s watch. The Mets´ farm system – while lacking frontline super-prospects – does have a lot of depth – and most of it was accumulated in the 2nd half of the “Minaya era”.
So, all in all, while I´m happy that our current FO seems to have a Plan (and a few backup plans too) and seems smart and up to date on things, I´m quite sure that close to 50 % of the roster of the next Mets playoff team will be made up of players that joined the organization when Minaya was in charge. Happy that Minaya has a job again – and the Padres organization will benefit, as long as they don´t let him hand out contracts to major league free agents.
