Boxing Day Applesauce: Sadly No Mega-Sales on 4th Outfielders or Backup Shortstops
Hope you all enjoyed any holiday celebrations this year, I received a Josh Satin shirtsy from my brother for Christmas, which is both awesome and a sad indictment of just how far my reputation precedes me now. But mostly awesome. Now let's round-up some holiday news.
Faith and Fear collects its Happiest 163 Mets games into one giant omnibus package for your convenience and perusal.
Crag Calcaterra prepares you for the horror of sportswriters' HoF ballot columns. It's going to be a long couple of weeks, you guys.
Joba Chamberlain: ITBSOHL? Careful now, you don't want to peak too early Joba. You should always aim to hit TBSOYL in Spring Training.
Very soon the Athletics may be asking, "Do you know the way to San Jose?"
Rob Neyer takes a look at free agents that might be forced into retirement this offseason and what their relative Hall of Fame chances are. I'm gonna miss Tim Wakefield, who was my favorite non-Met even back when he was with the Pirates and didn't look quite as much like Bruce Boxleitner.
With the San Francisco Giants having a very quiet offseason, much to their fans' chagrin, most think they are socking away cash to extend their trio of arms. So MLBTR takes a look at what a Matt Cain extension might look like.
I, for one, certainly can't resist the siren song of articles about junkballing, fringy prospects, so here is a look at how former Nationals pitcher Tom Milone might do in the friendly confines in Oakland. I am just happy I can root for Milone without guilt now.

Especially because, you know, this is probably not our year
Why don’t we try to sign minor league contracts for Tim Wakefield AND Charlie Zink?
The other team is going to score 7 runs anyway...
How About David Wright as the Back-Up SS?
If Hojo could do it…
How about Andruuuuuuuuuuw as our 4th outfieler?
As long as he is cheap enough on a one year deal. We can probably offload him before the trade deadline and save half of his salary. He provides outfield depth, a reasonable fill in when one of our OFers goes down and a power bat off of the bench. And if one of our OF studs steps up fromAAA Jones is trade bait.
Also, worth lobbing a ST invite to Wakefield. If he can put a little consistency together he might be able to eat 180 innings at replacement level. When was the last time two knucklers played together? It worked withDickey and a ST invite doesn’t cost much.

I am game...
To take a look on Jones. He cant be any worse than Bay can he?
I too lobby Wakefield on a ST invite. Worst case scenario is he accepts a AAA stint until Gee fails or Santana breaks. Best case scenario is he becomes our 5th starter.
What about looks at Ivan Rodriguez or Jason Kendall, can either be worse than Nickeas?
forgot that Kendall was even active
too bad the Mess have no monies, otherwise I’d trade for Kurt Suzuki

I'd give pudge a nudge for ST.
Costs nothing and I bet he is still better than Nickeas and maybe even Thole.

Tim Wakefield's retirement will mark the end of an era. Watertown professional baseball will be officially dead.
He’s the last of the old Watertown Pirates, and the last of their successors — the Watertown Indians — bit the dust many moons ago. That team is now the Staten Island Yankees… and good riddance.
Even more interesting than that
He is one of only two active players to play for a Pirates team with a winning record.
The other? None other than Miguel Batista, who pitched 2 innings for them in 1992.
