Mets have contacted Francisco Rodriguez
Well Everybody, It has come down to this: We may just have another season of K-Rod after all
Added by Eric: Not a bad idea, frankly. Rodriguez may come cheap — or, at the very least, on a one-year deal — and he's still quite good. He has to be a better option than Luis Ayala at any rate, and whatever he signs for will be significantly less than his vesting option would've paid him.

I would take him back...
But can we really afford it?

Can't afford it, and I'm not talking about the financial issue.
Proud supporter of a New York baseball team and a Boston football team. Yeah, deal with it!

The 2011 New York Mets: I don't know what to describe them as...
Staunch Parishioner Of The First United Church of R.A. Dickey
I remember when we first signed him, i had dreamed of him closing out big games for us.
Too bad we don’t get any big games anymore.
Yogi on the 1969 NY Mets....." overwhelming underdogs "
i've been saying this for a while
i’d absolutely welcome him back, with the obvious assumption that the dollars work.
i’ve never understood why the perception of k-rod’s time in NY is so overwhelmingly negative. was it a bit of a circus? yeah it was, but in terms of production on the field honestly, off the top of my head i can’t think of three closers that were better over a 3 year period?
This x1000
And all I heard from Frankie last season was negatives about his own performances, and high praise for Bobby Parnell. That perception is honestly ridiculous, totally agree.

Agreed.
He’s a bit of a heart attack when he’s pitching but he’s good. As long as there’s no crippling vest, I’d be okay with him. They could do a lot worse.

This guy
on a team that’s not ready to compete isn’t a good mix.
Although Ayala means they’ve thrown the towel in for 2012.
There should be some other closer that’s coming off surgery that’s available, no?
@JavaJoeX
The Ayala thing is a Jim Bowden rumor
I would take it with a heavy grain of salt, and even if they sign him it doesn’t mean Ayala would be the closer.
If the trade market looks shitty then I guess, sure.
I’d much rather Thornton or some other non-closer closer though.
Save Jenrry Mejia!
2012 Amazin' Avenue Offseason Plan: 2nd place
Thornton is signed to a 2-year deal with an option for a 3rd.
He’d still be around when we would be entering the “contend” portion of the rebuild or whatever you want to call it.
And for the most part, relievers who aren’t closerz don’t come that expensive. I mean, I’d rather trade for a guy who can help us now and down the road than use $6-7M of our limited budget on a one-year deal when it’s not likely we are a mid-80-win team.

So what would be a sufficient contract amount in everyone's minds?
I’m afraid of relievers so I’m thinking 2 yrs/$11MM or 1 yr/$7MM. I don’t think that would be enough, though.
Your not getting him for a 1 yr deal
he’s seeking a 3 yr deal
Yeah and he was seeking a 5 year deal in 2009.
He only got 3 that year. And he was the best closer on the market that year. That’s not currently the case, as I’d rank Madson over Frankie right now.

With the Red Sox, Blue Jays and Angels looking for a closer
I would bet he’ll end up getting a two or three year deal.
Well the Sox seem perfectly willing to give the job to either Bard or Jenks
They don’t really have that much need for an expensive closer
by Stephen Schmidt on Dec 4, 2011 7:30 PM EST up reply actions
They have reached out to Madson
and they are thinking about moving Bard to the rotation according to the Boston media. I doubt they trust the job to Jenks coming off an injury.
After Nathan got 2/14.5 or whatever
I’m concerned about what Frankie wants. Maybe the same thing?

You'd expect he'd also want to pitch for a competitive team
All things being equal.

Yeah,
Probably…being hopeful myself. Maybe 1/9, if we have some extra money for 2012? Or too much?

I'm curious
Is there any scenario in which we give 8+ million to a closer and stay a competitive team? I guess I’m just losing faith in the idea of a 100-110 million payroll. This signing seems pointless without Jose. Everything seems pointless without Jose. Sigh

What’s your definition of a “competitive team”? 70-75 wins?
The Mets could sign prime Mariano and not be competitive for a playoff spot… and that’s really what it’s about. They have no money to plug the various holes in their roster.

Well, they do need players.
But spending big money on them? Yeah. Definitely pointless.
But they weren’t going to spend big money on players even if Jose stayed. The Mets are broke (broken record, I know).

ESPN reporting the Marlins have offered Reyes 6/111M
That blows the Mets offer out of the water. It guarantees an extra year at a higher AAV.
Oh pissing blimey there's jam coming out of the walls!
was just posting that
i just died a little on the inside,
Didn't Sandy just say the Mets haven't made an offer yet two days ago?
There’s no offer yet to be blown out of the water if it’s even correct that the Marlins made the offer.

"The Mets, meanwhile, are reportedly willing to give Reyes a five-year, $80 million deal."
Even if that’s not true, there is no evidence the Mets are willing to go as high as the Marlins. He’s a Marlin unless the Brewers decide to outbid them.
Oh pissing blimey there's jam coming out of the walls!
Why would you believe that?
We have a quote from the GM two days ago that the team hasn’t made an offer yet and still wants to bring him back. Media speculation is all that you’re quoting, they don’t have any idea what the reality of the Mets valuation of Reyes is. The people who actually know what the plan is with Reyes aren’t leaking that information to the media, the Adam Rubins of the world have nothing but speculation.

Again, not people who matter
Until and unless Sandy & Co. say it, I will assume we are still in it. Beat writers in the hot stove season are worse than unreliable. Even if Rubin has a decent track record, Sandy’s administration has generally been pretty good about not leaking what they are planning, so I remain skeptical

Somebody is in denial.
Look, Rubin is not always 100% right and he’s kind of a douchebag, but he’s also (generally) doesn’t make shit up.

sigh Vest or no vest I was never a big fan of K-Rod.
"Fantasy, reality, science Fiction. Which is which? Who can tell?"
No one should ever be given the Ollie Special.
I mean hell even if the Mets want to offer that to someone, just say it’s 2/24 with a $12 mil buyout.
I'd take him again on a 1 year deal.
We might actually get some decent at the trading deadline if he’s making half of what he did last year. At the very least, he’s probably an easy Type B Free agent for a draft pick.
