Keith Law on the Reyes Signing
The article is for Insiders, but there's some good points about the Mets' side of things:
"There is no rational argument that the Mets should have invested for that length of time in a player as risky as Reyes is -- they should be thinking long-term, and Reyes' risk increases exponentially as time goes on. Shortstop is a tough hole for them to fill in the short term, but given their other issues, they are better off with Reyes in South Florida."
I know a lot of people wanted to see Reyes back, but I'm with Klaw on this one. The team just isn't in a position to make that kind of deal, considering both the state of the team and the state of the finances.

Rationality...
Not ready to go there yet.
I typed your symptoms into this thing up here and it says you could have network connectivity problems.
this
as much as it wants to creep into my head, I WANT JOSE REYES!!!
2012 New York Mets, World Series Champions!
I know, seriously
Fuck the Wilpons, fuck Omar, fuck M. Donald Grant, fuck you, just give me JOSE REYES back. :’(
"Amazing strength, amazing power - he can grind the dust out of the bat. He will be great, super even wonderful. Now, if he can only learn to catch a fly ball."

Fuck ESPN
Screw what that Skankee propaganda house has to say
Mets, Jets, Devils, United Football League
Yup
The deal itself isn’t a particularly bad one; I think the Marlins have a better-than-even chance of getting fair value. But it didn’t really work for what the Mets need to do. I am unhappy that Reyes is a Marlin, but I think the Mets made the right move.
I don't get this.
(Ignoring that there was apparently no money to do it.)
There’s a decent chance the Marlins break even, but it’s not what the Mets should do…

this, it is actually more than a decent chance if you believe these models

High variance on the deal
There’s a significant chance that the deal flops by year 2 or 3 because of chronic injury. Say… 60% chance Reyes is worth a fair bit more than he is paid, but 40% chance it’s a total failure. The Mets can’t afford that kind of risk right now.
It's not just about matching production to a dollar value.
It’s more about the team’s circumstances. For a team that isn’t likely to contend soon, has very limited resources and a lot of holes to fill, is it smart to allocate such a big portion of those resources on one player? Even if the contract ends up being “worth it” in terms of production and dollars, that doesn’t mean it would be worth it to the Mets. There’s a good chance that Tejada + whatever the FO can get for $16 million would be worth more WAR than Reyes this season. Now, if the team had that $16 million to spare, then you could have all that WAR at one position with Reyes, and still money left over to make those other additions. But as things stand, they’re better off spreading the money around.

I didn't give the article the page-view so perhaps the context is there
but the excerpt doesn’t make mention of our extremely limited finances. I took it more as an objective claim or a thought experiment.

Ahh Rationality.
Agree with everything you said.
Reyes is a future hall of famer
I don;t want to see him go there as a Marlin Tweedle dee and tweedle dum are responsible for a lot of terrible contracts. I would prefer Jose to Bay and Santana
He's no hall of famer anymore
Now he’s gonna get injured and the contract will fail miserably. Only because he signed with the Marlins though.
