Four years, $58 million. This is getting out of hand, now.

I'm happy about this
Definitely overpaid here…and four years, too. Also minimizes their Fielder chances, one would think.

Dickey be Praised!
No way they can sign Pujols or Fielder now
Our 2nd round pick is “protected”, so to speak.
Eliminates
That’s three type A and B guys…there are less than 62 of them this year so that’s the limit by rule. The fishies can’t sign any more big ticket guys.
by Stephen Schmidt on Dec 8, 2011 6:41 AM EST up reply actions
Are we sure the rule is part of the new CBA?
I know it was in the old one.
Ad are we sure that Bell counts? He got reclassified into some sort of special category . . . there are huge rumors the Fish are still in on CJ Wilson – seems like someone from the league would have told them if they were at their limit already.
Did someone spike my water with LSD?

Not unhappy with this
Probably overpaid and it also minimizes that chance that they get Pujols/Wilson/Fielder. Buerhle is Type B so he won’t push back the Mets 2nd round draft pick like the others would. Small consolation but whatever.
wow, the Marlins are taking all these players
I dont think they understand they have to pay for them later…

Bell is the only remotely movable contract of the three
Nobody else was willing to offer anything close to what Reyes and Buehrle got when they only cost money, and with the way Jose is backloaded it’s never going to get any better.
by Stephen Schmidt on Dec 8, 2011 6:46 PM EST up reply actions
Don't think Loria cares.
He’ll make some big $$ for 2-3 years, then sell the team. It’ll be some new owners headache.

maybe so
but I don’t think you get to a World Series with it.
Cards got there after losing Wainwright
with Carpenter (stud) – Jaime Garcia – Kyle Lohse – Jake Westbrook & Kyle McClellan.
Getting into the tournament is the thing – once you’re there anything can happen.
with that arm injury
Johnson is no bet to be elite and who are the three 3-4 sure fire WAR pitchers they have?
Umm....
Mark Buehrle – Since 2007, has been between 3.4 and 4.6 WAR
Anibal Sancez – 2010: 4.4 WAR, 2011: 3.8
Ricky Nolasco – 3.9 WAR in 2008, 4.3 WAR in 2009, and 3.5 WAR in 2011. In 2010 he was worth 2.5 WAR in 157.2 innings
Most of Buerhle's value comes from him being a workhorse, not a dominating pitcher

That contract is a little out of hand
it is official though, when the Marlins sell off the team in a year or three because they didn’t foresee the financial issues from all of these mega deals, MLB better do something about that owner group and/or team.
Maybe Bud can send the owners an email to meet at the awful HR display thingy one night and then bomb the hell outta it – two birds, one bomb
2012 New York Mets, World Series Champions!
Why are players allowing themselves to be suckered in by Miami?
Their owner has a track record of lying to fans, is under investigation from the SEC and they have never drawn any fans. Plus the last time the Marlins went on a spending spree, they traded all their talent a year later. I don’t understand why any player would want to go play there, especially when they are basically telegraphing their intent to unload everyone with their insistence on not handing out no trade clauses.

I'm amazed how the media is reacting as well
They take shots at anything and everything, but for some reason have decided to take all of this Marlins business at face value.
It isn't even just the no trade clauses
Reyes’ contract has him earning $10mm in his first year, and it’s a $106mm contract. That should throw up a lot of red flags.
SELL THE METS
damn, i didnt even realize it was that heavily backloaded
Hey, wait! I'm having one of those things. You know? A headache with pictures?
by KeithsMoustache on Dec 7, 2011 6:33 PM EST up reply actions
Actually
Reyes gets 10 million in both 2012 and 2013. It then jumps to 16 million in 2014. By that time, the patented Marlins fire sale should be held. It´s 22 million per year for the final 3 years, plus the 4 million $ buyout or a 7th year at 22 million.
Of course, speaking of Marlins fire sales, the last two times (2005 & 1998) the Mets landed Carlos Delgado, Paul Loduca & Al Leiter in the process.
So, with 2014 seeming like the target year for a legit Mets contender and no financial commitments for then at this point, pretty much everyone the Marlins sign now may have a good shot at joining the 2014 Mets.
maybe our strategy is secretly to let the Marlins sign everyone, so we can steal them back at our leisure
Hey, wait! I'm having one of those things. You know? A headache with pictures?
by KeithsMoustache on Dec 8, 2011 1:38 AM EST up reply actions
I doubt that Reyes would be worth taking on in 2015
for $22 mill a year. But if he has performed well and managed to stay healthy someone probably will …
Following the Mets from across the pond.
Yeah - there's a team with a SS who's also their captain
that will be needing a SS about then. Wouldn’t that be a nightmare!
no one else is offering them that kinda money
maybe they don’t care where they are in 3 years for that kind of dough
2012 New York Mets, World Series Champions!
If what you mostly care about is the dollars, I guess it's smart
negotiate with an owner who doesn’t give a damn about the total because he’s not going to be paying it, you’ll get that nice big total regardless.
My thoughts
1) Has any guaranteed major league baseball contract in the modern era not been paid due to lack of funds? Regardless of what happens to the Marlins, those players will get paid somehow, I’m sure.
2) If they win a championship, what do they care if they get traded, most likely to a big-market contender like the Red Sox or Yankees, a year later?
by dontstopbelieving on Dec 7, 2011 7:39 PM EST up reply actions
Well if the players only intent is to make as much money as is possible
than yea, as long as they get paid they won’t care. But I will assume that most player also care about getting some satisfaction out of their job.So being a paid mercenary for a year or two and then being traded to any tea the front office decides to deal you to, while playing in front of empty stadium every night does not sound like something I would want.

first of all
if the free agents are afraid of playing in front of an empty stadium, choosing Miami was the worst idea they could have made. Second, only teams in contention, looking for a push over the edge and/or with money to spend would be looking to pick these guys up, so I don’t see why they would be afraid of suddenly playing in front of an empty stadium for a new team
2012 New York Mets, World Series Champions!
Not only does Loria have a track record of lying...
… but he’s only marginally responsible for building the 2003 champions in the first place. All of the heavy lifting was done by John Henry and Dave Dombrowski before the “contraction” debacle in which Loria was essentially handed the Marlins so Henry could buy the Sox. All Loria did was steal office supplies from the Expos complex on his way out the door, hire and fire Jeff Torborg, then hire Jack McKeon. Everything else he inherited.
Not to mention the fact that he basically ruined the Expos franchise, then salted the earth behind him on the way out of town.
I actually feel a little bad for Jose, and am more than a little disappointed that he fell for their B.S. I thought he’d leave us, but not for that sorry franchise.
I don't think Jose is all that business savy.
In fact, most of these MLB players probably aren’t. That’s what they’ve got agents for.
And the higher the salary an agent negotiates for his client, the higher his own commission is. Don’t think most care about the logistics of where the player signs or what happens after he signs.
by MetsFan4Decades on Dec 7, 2011 9:14 PM EST up reply actions
No one else made a bid for Jose
None of the other clubs initially thought to have interest made a peep. That’s the biggest solace I take out of losing him. If none of the other succesfull clubs were willing to get in that deep maybe he’s a bigger risk than some of us think.
As long as they get paid (considerbly more than what other teams offer)
I don’t think they care. MLB contracts are guaranteed and they’ll get their money whether traded or having a backloaded contract.

Their early season success is far more sustainable than the Minnesota Wilds is
The Wild never have the puck, can’t score and their goaltenders stats are unsustainable. I’d think if they somehow keep winning every Hockey stats guys head will explode.
Just so we're clear,
the Marlins are totally trafficking in cocaine, right? That’s pretty much the only way they could suddenly have all this money to spend after a decade of crying poverty. Think about it: they’re constantly traveling around the country, they’ve got operations in Latin America, they’re on this crazy spending binge. What else could it be?

I want to see Loria sign them all. When it all falls apart, it’ll be that much more LOL.
NY Times has an article on ‘Something Fishy in Miami’.
Good read talking about how Loria is talking deals with anyone who walks in the elevator.
Another quoted as saying the running joke at this year’s winter meeting is in 2 years when they’re in Orlando, Loria will be conducting his fire sale.

In theory they can't
That would be 4 type A and B guys. There would need to be more than 62 of them total (there aren’t) or the Marlins would have to lose four (they can’t) to be eligible to sign a fourth. That rule goes away under the new system, but they are done with the big names this year (assuming the rule still stands as it should).

I wonder how they'll manage to offload some of these backloaded contracts
without eating a significant portion of their salaries. Even if some rich team decide to eat all of a player’s contract the Marlins would likely get no prospects out of it. It would be hilarious is they tried to do a firesale but nobody want to trade with them.
