It's all so clear to me now...
Pujols #1 goal in life is to make Astros fans miserable.

Wow
Poor Cards fans. (Hah, not really. I tried, but no.)
good riddance
I was hoping he’d leave the NL, but not to the Yankees or Red Sox. I was kind of hoping Toronto would open the wallet for him, but this will do just fine.
Enjoy Lance Berkman returning to a pumpkin next year, Cards fans! Hey, at least you still have David “Mike Schmidt” Freese! HA HA HA HA HA!!!!
Mark Cuban for owner! Save us from the Wilpons!
What a confusing feeling it must be for Angels' fans.
You get the best player in baseball but you’re also going to get a crippling contract expecially in years 5-10 when Pujols is washed up.
They do a grea job of collecting those things
Artie Moreno, eccentric Millionaire. Some collect art, some amass menageries but he collects bad contracts.
Well, at least Pujols has the option to DH when his legs start to rust (he is part machine).

Its not THAT bad ....
Personally, I would never given that contract, but he essentially turns into a dedicated DH the last 5 years of the deal. Plus with the Dodgers in disarray, the Angels may just be able to pay for it with the added gate they’ll make.
Does that mean you think that
The declining attendance at Citi Field increases attendance at Yankie Stadiun?

Nobody seems concerned about it on Halos Heaven
Can’t say I blame them either. Having baseball’s greatest star join your team is just awesome.
I wasn’t particularly worried about Johan’s Santana’s contract size when we signed him, I was just psyched to see him in orange and blue.

On Opening Day Pujols will be the same age
that ARod was on the opening day following his signing of a 10-year deal.
Totally
What’s your point?

Nothing more than
it’s raise to have 2 ten year deals to follow. I’m interested to see if either/both become total debacles or salvageable in the final 3-4 years.
I think the A-Rod deal will not go that well for us
We still have like 5-6 years left on his contract, and his health is already in question. But only time will tell.

It's already not going very well
The first year after the extension he was worth 3.5 million more than he was paid, but he’s been worth between 5.5 and 10 million less than his salary in each subsequent year. I have to imagine that’s only going to get worse from here on out as well.

The Angels recently signed an regional cable TV contract that pays $150 million/year
They can afford one stupid contract like this.

wow
I guess they been saving up to offer Albert a king’s ransom the past few seasons. It certainly is the right move for Pujols to go to the AL where he can eventually DH full time. I hope the Mets never sign someone to a contract like that (length or dollars), unless they are like 23 and have a couple of 8 WAR seasons already – then I could understand the length a little better
2012 New York Mets, World Series Champions!
Better than the Marlins
So much for team loyalty.
Now, kids, being eaten by a crocodile is just like going to sleep; in giant blender.
Their only team loyalty
is to team $$$$$. I can’t say that I would be any different. I like to think otherwise but who knows?
"Sometimes you make a mistake and you get hit in the head." - Eli Manning
I know
99% of time I’d run to the money too, if I was Albert. But, I would be an immortal in St. Louis for what, $20 million less and one less year? I’d rather be an immortal than get that extra $20 million. Besides, I’d probably make that up in events I would be welcomed to in St. Louis after I retire.
Now, kids, being eaten by a crocodile is just like going to sleep; in giant blender.
Oh shit
it’s for $250 to $260 million over ten years. Compared to 9 for $198 million that St. Louis offered before. Disregard my “team loyalty” comment. $52 to $62 million is nothing to sneeze at, immortal or not.
Now, kids, being eaten by a crocodile is just like going to sleep; in giant blender.
this is refreshing to read
Most of these SBN boards are usually full of “man, how can [whatever player signs a big deal with another team] be so greedy?!?!”
I think Pujols grew up poorer than me, and I can tell you I’d leave STL for a lot less than $50M.
The above comment is not affiliated with the San Francisco Giants, is not based on a secret source of team information, and may contain personal opinion.

My original basis was 220 for 10
compared to 198 for 9. That’s roughly a 10% increase in an offer. To me, a 10% discount is worth being immortal in a traditional baseball town plus I know I’ll be able to make it up from the appearances I would make in St. Louis after I retire. But that wasn’t the case. The actual deal is 254 for 10. Compared to the 198 for 9, that’s an almost 30% increase in salary plus one extra year! Sorry, I’m doing that, immortal or not.
Now, kids, being eaten by a crocodile is just like going to sleep; in giant blender.
Looked at another way Pujols cost himself $130m
According to this Bank Rate cost of living calculator, if you make $22m in St. Louis you need to make $35.6m in Santa Anna-Anaheim-Irvine to maintain the same quality of life.
I think the multipliers on that calculator
are screwed up once you reach a couple of hundred thousand. It’s not like you can eat $15m worth of lobster in a year.
by deadspy3 on Dec 9, 2011 8:54 AM EST up reply actions 1 recs
It looks like the MO top state tax bracket is 6%
While the CA one is 9.55%. So that’s $450-900k/yr more in state tax playing for the Angels depending on how all the states where they play road games handle this.
(He probably has some real good accountants, though.)
I'll accept that challenge
just get me $15m worth of lobster, and we’ll see who has the last laugh
Hey, wait! I'm having one of those things. You know? A headache with pictures?
by KeithsMoustache on Dec 9, 2011 5:16 PM EST up reply actions
No offense to St Louie
but I could give a crap about being immortal in St Louis. Not sure that would be an incredible motivation.
It's one of the four or five traditional baseball cities
Not something to sneeze at, from a baseball legacy standpoint.

That's what I always think too
That when you are talking those numbers, what’s a few million $ (ha) to set yourself up in a great or comfortable place? These guys always seem to take the highest possible bid and are not always happy (Arod). But in this case who knows how LaRussa retiring played into this.
"Sometimes you make a mistake and you get hit in the head." - Eli Manning
Eh I think you're looking at it from two limited a point of view.
If someone is offering you a job making 300,000 and one making 600,000 are you going to say the 300,000 pay cut isn’t that big of a difference? Millionaires/Billionaires live in a different scale.
one does not simply walk into mordor...unless winter is coming
Usually it's much closer than that
Say $50 mil vs $60 mil or even $20 mil vs $25 mil. And usually they are ALREADY set for life as multi millionaires. To me 600,000 and even 300,000 is life changing money. These guys have already had their lives changed.
"Sometimes you make a mistake and you get hit in the head." - Eli Manning
But even in this case if it's $200 m vs $250 m
It’s still two hundred freaking million dollars. Not saying he did or didn’t do this but when the numbers are that high I think you just decide where you will be the happiest. Ask ARod about taking the highest contract.
But, alas, it is a decision I will never get to make.
"Sometimes you make a mistake and you get hit in the head." - Eli Manning
But what about TAXES? Our "wonderful" Government ALWAYS takes 25% of it away
so I can understand Pujols wanting to get that number as high as he can so that the NET PROFIT he gets is higher.
Pujol is already immortalized as one of the greatest hitter ever
and has a ticket to Cooperstown.

True
I’m totally in on that argument for guys who aren’t world historical – if you can buy a lifetime of veneration in a specific geography for some marginal millions, why would you not? Your money will already buy everything you could otherwise want. But Pujols is one of the greats, and will have the veneration everywhere. He’s just expanding the pool of people who really, really care. Smart.
I just wish he had done a TV special
And told everyone that he was abandoning a rust-belt city to take his talents to Laguna Beach.

If you're a "pride" guy this makes sense
Doesn’t Howards deal average $25m per? Easy case for an agent to make that you’ve got to top that AAV. The question is would he have taken $26m x 8 years = $208 from St. Louis with some non-reachable vests for years 9 & 10?
Also makes sense if you're a "money" guy
because it’s more money.
What in the world
are they gonna do with a healthy Kendry Morales?

I bet they wish they pushed harder for Jose Reyes

I'm guessing I'm in the minority
but that deal just seems incredibly stupid. How can you even begin to project a 30-35 year old guy guy 10 years down the road? So many things could happen.
Because you have to look at the total value
not the length. The length has more to do with structuring for various possible CBA issues, accounting, etc. Look at it more as a five-year deal for $50MM per . . .
That said, yes, it’s incredibly stupid, but they just got a big TV deal, they’re counting on threshhold effects, and there may be some of that good old-fashioned Roman Abramovich non-monetary ego-fueled incentive for Moreno.
I wonder what the Angels do with Trumbo...
Does he go to the outfield. He’s never played 3b. Pujols can play third, but not well at all.
I can't remember...
Do they still have Abreu as DH? Did his option vest?

I don't feel bad for the Cardinals fans per se, because, well i hate the cardinals and screw them
but in general its sad to see another guy who could have become an icon of a city give it up for more money. I’ll admit the Angels paid out a ridiculous amount to get the guy, and that’d be really tough to say no to, but loyalty in sports really is completely dead isn’t it? I don't think it's ALWAYS dead from the other side, I mean look at the Yankees.
Even the red sox seem willing to shell out over value in some cases to keep really big homegrown names. Plus it’s not just about the money thing. It’s the fact the cardinals have been a continuous world series contender, and the angels have kind of been up and down.

Well, it's amazing how quickly one story can change my perspective on mets baseball
Like either everyone in baseball is money crazy and cares about nothing else. Or the players union is putting heavy pressure on players to sign for the biggest contracts. Is it possible for players to collude?
one does not simply walk into mordor...unless winter is coming
Collude so that they....all get more money?
Baseball is a business. In the business world, company loyalty exists…but at the end of the day you want high salaries. I don’t think trying to sign the best contracts for them could really be collusion, if only because it’s a very, very defensible and rational choice.
Not to mention apparently both Pujols and Wilson were offered more money from the Marlins, and turned it down. So there are factors other than just money.
David Eckstein: so gritty they would eat him in the south for breakfast with some butter and sprinkle cheese.

The Morales/Trumbo situation becomes the largest story left in the offseason. Two guys with ridiculous upside…

Follow me on Twitter: @KovalRise
Dickey be Praised!
the only thing Trumbo offers is HRs
how do they even compare? Otherwise, he doesn’t walk, play a premium position, or hit for average. Maybe there is a smaller gap than I am thinking, but don’t see how that becomes the largest story left? Especially since Prince Fielder has always been the largest (physically) this offseason and is still available, afaik
