Diamond Futures Mets Top Prospects 2011
Mets system ranked at #14.
"Given the state of the franchise, our ranking of the Mets system likely comes as a surprise to some, but it remains fairly consistent with our view of the system from last year ( TEAM #16 – New York Mets )—a year that saw four of our top eight ranked prospects (Ike Davis, Reuben Tejada, Jon Niese and Josh Thole) make significant contributions with the Big League club. It is an interesting organization in the sense that there are few superstars but a substantial number of players that are likely to make Major League contributions—something that would typify last year’s rookie crop."

Sounds about right
Most “non-politically biased” Minor League rankings have us around the mixed.

There aren't many
Honestly, this is the first one I’ve seen this year higher than 20. Though I do think it’s about right.
I almost wonder if some of the spin isn’t actually coming from the organization itself. With a complete overhaul of the front office, it probably helps them buy time to set expectations a bit low for the farm, initially. I can see where a lot of these guys do rely on the organizations themselves for some information. I really can’t see much other reason for bias.
It is accurate to say they could use to go after one or two more toolsy higher ceiling types. But the relatively “safe” picks they have been loading up on are all power bats. It’s not like they are “low ceiling” guys offensively.
Of Lucas Duda, Fernando Martinez, Kirk Nieuwenhuis, Sean Ratliff, Zach Lutz, Wilmer Flores, Jefry Marte, Cesar Puello, Aderlin Rodriguez, Cory Vaughn, and Brian Harrison, the only ones under 6’2" are Martinez, Lutz, and Marte. Every one of these guys has above average power projection, and has shown an ability to hit for average. Yeah, what a boring system. Too many similar guys. Just a bunch of guys who all look like they have a good chance to be average big league corner position players, while hitting 20+ HR a year. Yeah, who needs those.
I can remember when this system went a decade without developing any guys like that. They used to draft a bunch of supposedly high ceiling toolsy speedsters who never did learn to hit.
So yeah, some more pitching would be nice, some more overslot “top talents” would be nice, keeping more high draft picks would be nice, maybe even trading for some prospects at times, but please, please, please don’t stop drafting the boring big college power bats, or signing those boring Latin power hitting third basemen.

I can't tell you the names, since I don't remember them,
but I’ve seen the team ranked as 14th, 16th and 17th.

I guess I didn't see them
I know Keith Law and Frankie Piliere both had them bottom 5, as did the fangraphs guy. Baseball America had us at 20, but that was even including Mejia and Martinez. I don’t think I’d have this system bottom third even if considering those two ineligible.
Huh?
The Mets are likely to give Mejia a chance to earn a rotation spot this spring. Even if he comes up short, he is likely to open the season as part of the bullpen.
This is for this year, right?
Save Jenrry Mejia!
And then there's this:
Martinez will go to camp this spring with a shot at an everyday job with the Mets. The expectation is that he at least wins a roster position.
Again, huh?
They also don’t seem to be aware that Duda only had part of one season playing in the OF.
Save Jenrry Mejia!
not to worry
the AA prospect rankings will be out soon in conjunction with the release of the annual. you can count on a lot more ‘hometown’ knowledge as well as first-hand accounts; plus we went 50 players deep.
