The song's Wikipedia page is an awesome read:
Ark Music handled the video’s production, and also made heavy use of the pitch-correcting software Auto-Tune.
[Mother, Georgina] Kelly paid Ark Music $2,000 for a package that included a choice of two pre-written songs.
The song’s co-writer and producer Clarence Jey said that “the concept we feel seems to have crossed a lot of boundaries, for the better or worse.”

Still say under.
He never hits anything deep as a lefty and doesn’t have all that much power from the right side (even though that’s his “power side”). I could see him hitting 2 or 3 from the right side if he gets enough at bats.

Utley must be
worse then they’re letting on and they must be worried about Polanco’s elbow as well.
So instead of needing perpetual Pedro to face Utley/Howard/Ibanez in the later innings, our new LOOGY can strike out Howard, induce a ground out for Ibanez and just avoid the walk to Castillo.
Nice.

Even if he gets a decent OBP with them
It’s a win because of how annoying it is from a fan’s perspective to go from gold glove defense to crappy defense at a position.
calm your pits, it's only
going to be a minor league deal. they’re not going to hand him the 2B job even if Utley needs surgery. I think a lot of scenarios would have to play out before we’re going to see LuisC as the Phils regular 2Bman.
by ThnkGoodnessforHowieRose on Mar 20, 2011 11:37 PM EDT reply actions
Who else do they have, though?
There’s no prospects ready to take the job, they can’t afford to spend much more than the minimum, and they clearly don’t want to start Wilson Valdez at 2B.

you can bet that it's merely a backup plan, and if Utley

by ThnkGoodnessforHowieRose on Mar 20, 2011 11:59 PM EDT up reply actions
But again, what kind of deal can they make?
They’ve got no salary flexibility, and their system is pretty barren at this point.

by BobbyV_Incognito on Mar 21, 2011 12:01 AM EDT up reply actions
I don't pretend to know what payroll flexibility
the Phils have or don’t have. and they may not have a ML ready 2Bman but that system is certainly not barren by many accounts.
Regardless, there are always ways to find players and 2Bmen are about the most fungible commodity of baseball player there is. Moreover, talk to the Mets about budgetary limits… they found a way to fill their needs this winter… somehow I don’t see the Phils “having no other options” but Luis Castillo.
by ThnkGoodnessforHowieRose on Mar 21, 2011 12:06 AM EDT up reply actions
Yes, the Mets found a way to fill their needs
despite their budgetary limitations, but Sandy Alderson & Co. are much smarter than Ruben “$125 million to Ryan Howard” Amaro, Jr. And while I can’t cite specific numbers, every report about the Phillies has said that they’re already up against their ceiling, and can’t afford to add any more salary.

for such a short period of time
I’d probably go with Valdez. Defense is likely to shine most during a short period of time. Seriously though, in two months of playing time, this is probably the difference between .1 WAR and .4 WAR, or something even worse.
It is worth noting the weird platoon splits here.. Valdez doesn’t have much data but he’s terrible against lefties.
Kicking knowledge in the face.
But do you really think Amaro values defense?
In that park, with the team he’s assembled?

not highly
but I’m sure he values it in some capacity. Valdez has a pretty good chance to be just as good offensively as Castillo. It’s a lock that he’s better defensively, even Amaro has to know that.
Kicking knowledge in the face.
this.
in the end I think they’ll go with Valdez for a while but bring in another player if Utley has surgery that puts him out for half season or more.

Luis Hernandez
winding up a Philly couldn’t even be discounted. As it’s highly unlikely he’s going to make the final cut, he could end up getting the gig in Philly as well. And there will be a bunch of others hitting the waiver wire over the next 10 days as well.

how could anyone possibly
know what other options they’ll look at when rosters get further trimmed a week from now for one thing…? and of course the Phils will make their own assessment once they see Luis 1st hand… LC may not even warrant PT over Valdez or Barfield for that matter… and there’s also the scenario that they could slide Polcnco back over to 2B and find a 3Bman (assuming Polanco is ready to go himself).

Overpaying a slow footed, old Ryan Howard,
4 years for mid-30’s Placido Polanco to play a position he hadn’t played in years, 3 years for a nearing 40 Raul Ibanez and dealing unnecessary prospects and Cliff Lee just for the right to negotiate a contract extension with mid-30’s Roy Halladay?
That sounds like active sabotage to me. Under Gillick that team was primed for a longer run of solid teams, as they had the combo of solid young big league talent and a deep farm system with prospects close to the majors. Their system is barren at the top levels now. Low level talent in the minors is nice but just ask Omar MInaya how long it takes for that to develop into results. It took until the end of Omar’s tenure (a good 5 years) to see the fruits of a solid core in the low minors.
Chamption of the R.A. Dickey Face contest and "Cromulent Photoshopper Extraordinaire" of Amazin' Avenue!
by Steve Schreiber on Mar 21, 2011 7:53 AM EDT up reply actions
not going to address every point here, but
while Ibanez and Polance may have been slight overpays, merely going by your own bible, F/G would have Ibanez at about a break even if he plays this year at the same level as he played last year.
and Polanco practically earned his entire 3 yr deal in the 1st yr according to F/G.
Now I’m not going to sit here and claim that the Phils haven’t overpaid anyone or haven’t made any bad deals (Blanton), but the difference is that they’re a deep and well balanced team in the middle of a dynasty… and as much as anything, winning is about timing – the Phils time is now and that means sometimes having to go over budget to keep certain players in order to maintain what you have going… much like the Mets will most likely have to overpay in order to keep Reyes…
by ThnkGoodnessforHowieRose on Mar 21, 2011 9:44 AM EDT up reply actions
I'm not sure I agree with deep and well balanced
I think a few injuries will really show how many holes the Phils had in depth. After Utley they have Oilspill and now Castillo, now that they lost werth and Brown is out for a while, Ben Francisco takes over in OF. If a starter from their big 3 goes down, who steps in to replace them? They’re not carrying a lot of starting depth thats ML ready. While I think the “barren system” is a bit of a hyperbole, they don’t have much in the way of players ready to immediately come up and fill in at a level that would constitute reasonable production. And while yes Polanco and Ibanez played well last year, they also both have potential injury written all over them being on the older side, and polanco already with some injury concerns to begin with. They’re a topheavy team that’ll steamroll a lot of teams if things go right, but could go the way of the 2009 Mets if they get hit with a couple injuries.

sure that doesn't change the fact that the Phillies will go into the season with an offense markedly worse than last years
they still don’t know who their second baseman is, and almost no rotation ever makes it through the whole season without pitchers missing time, and they don’t have much to fill in with. I’m not sure how you can call the team balanced and deep.

I mean that
it’s not a 4 or 5 man core. Their core about 10 or 12 players deep.
Halladay
Lee
Oswalt
Hamels
Lidge
Madson
Ruiz
Howard
Rollins
Polanco
Ibanez
Utley
Victorino
by ThnkGoodnessforHowieRose on Mar 21, 2011 10:31 AM EDT up reply actions
sure, but as of now Utley is injured
Lidge has been hurt and even when healthy last year only put up 0.4 WAR, mostly due to his tendency to walk everyone. Polanco has questions about his elbow holding up. Stack that with Howard looking awful last season, Jimmy Rollins spending half of last year on the DL with assorted inuries. Ibanez was less than a 2 WAR player last year, and he’s 39 years old, which doesn’t really bode well for an uptick in production. I’ll grant you Victorino and Ruiz are both solid and fairly durable (I hate that you made me praise Victorino by the way). Can’t knock their rotation much, it’s the stuff of dreams if they stay healthy. However their defense is awful, and you can’t win if you can’t score runs. I’m not saying the Phils don’t have the potential to be awesome if everyone performs at the highest level you could expect of them, but I see them as a glass cannon. They can do a lot of damage, but if even a few small things go wrong, they’ll shatter to pieces.

Depends how much they have to pay him.
Over Castillo’s last 3 seasons he’s been worth 0.6, 1.6,and 0.6 WAR respectively. He’ll probably be worth around half a win (0.5 WAR) this year if given 300 PA’s. That would mean that if they pay him $2M or less (not saying they should pay him $2M, but with Amaro you never know), he’ll be worth the contract.
Save Jenrry Mejia!
I believe the
Phillies only have to pay him the big league minimum since the Mets already owe him 6 million. It’s not like they’re getting killed payroll-wise, so he be somewhat valuable in a vacuum based on what the Phils are paying him (as long as he’s not worth negative value of course).

I almost hope he hits like 10-15 home runs (all in games where the phils are being blown out so it doesn't matter)
just so we can really drive home how ridiculous CBP is
Hey, wait! I'm having one of those things. You know? A headache with pictures?

Can the Phillies take Perez too?

My answer would be the same
as my reaction to the Castillo signing.

Still, if I can temporarily drop my bias,
I will say “Good for you guys.” Ditching Slappy and the Perez (homer) Dispenser is a good sign for the leadership of Sandy and Collins. While I won’t deny indulging in some delicious schadenfreude in the past few years, I do deeply enjoy the rivalry that pops up when both teams are good at the same time (granted, it’s only happened a few times…).

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
This is what can happen during the season :} I LOVE IT !!! They may have the best pitching staff, on paper, but, with LC, that will be an automatic out. This is the best news ever. He can’t run, catch, throw or hit the ball beyond second base, so, he fits in with the Phillies just perfect. This is so awesome. I LOVE IT !!! If we are lucky, the Phillies will sign Ollie, as well, once we drop him ;} LETS GO METS!!!!!
Luis Castillo
is anything but an automatic out. The dude will still reach base at around a .320 .340 clip honestly.
Enjoying what may be the final season of two of my favorite Mets in Blue and Orange: Jose Reyes and Carlos Beltran
That's horrible when you consider he has absolutely no power
There is no hope.... there is no future....there is only GRISSIONZ
The 2011 Mets- Rock bottom: We haven't reached it yet
I don't know
He has a really good eye, absolutely. But as somebody said the other day, what he used to get done is going to be ever harder to get done. The unignorable fact is that he cannot hurt pitchers anymore. He can’t get the ball very far, so the defense will play him close, and if the pitcher can just throw strikes, he probably won’t get a hit. He’s a weapon against a pitcher who can’t throw strikes, is all he is now.
so how quickly will it take Luis Slappy Castillo to whine about the rabid fans over there?
"Fantasy, reality, science Fiction. Which is which? Who can tell?"
Did Luis ever say anything about Mets fans?
I’d be surprised. He said things in reference to team leadership – i.e., that he wanted to be a starter, but I’d expect any achiever anywhere in any field to be reluctant to admit he couldn’t handle the top job anymore.
He lost his skills. It doesn’t turn him into a reprehensible fan-hating lazy fat-face turd.
hard to see Luis
even beating out Josh Barfield. Apparently Amaro saying he’s only part of competition and if he doesn’t win job he’ll be released… not going to minors.

will beat out the guy who was worth that just last year? Okay.

2 words for you:
young legs.
by ThnkGoodnessforHowieRose on Mar 21, 2011 6:17 PM EDT up reply actions
and it's irrelevant
what Castillo did in his career. best bet is to look at what he did this past yr. face it. he’s awful now and that’s all that matters. I’d take my chances with the young legs every time over the soon to be 36 Castillo.
by ThnkGoodnessforHowieRose on Mar 21, 2011 10:24 PM EDT up reply actions
Castillo was worth 0.6 WAR last year.
The last time Barfield was worth anything positive was 2006. It doesn’t matter how young the legs are if they belong to a crappy player.
Save Jenrry Mejia!
if Castillo had
any “positive value” in 2010 then there is something seriously flawed with that system my man… cause idk how a player can be worse… .285 w/OBA, .035 ISO. I’d certainly take my chances with the 28 yo Barfiled or even Delwyn Young if I were the Phillies or heck, even Pete Orr can’t be worse than LuisC.
Either way, I’ll be surprised if Castillo wins a competition there once they get to see him play for a week.
btw, it’s being reported that the Phils are going to make a play for Michael Young now… if true I guess they found some $ in their budget.
by ThnkGoodnessforHowieRose on Mar 22, 2011 7:20 AM EDT up reply actions
And this is where your opinion > facts.
The numbers most be flawed if they don’t agree with you!
And any deal involving Young probably has some money changing hands.
Save Jenrry Mejia!
of course money will be changing hands
but according to others here, the Phils had no money to do anything.
and yes, it’s obviously my opinion that there are other more intuitive measures than WAR. what is comparing to a replacement player? Even at “replacement level” give or take a fraction, at 35/36 every can easily tell that Castillo is only getting worse… it’s not like he’s suddenly going to be a 2 or 3 win player. If I were the Phils why not take a chance on one of the others in camp who may deliver something? Guys like Barfield or Young need an opportunity as much as anything. iow, we know how bad Castillo is, but there’s still some possibkle upside going with the others.
and btw, using the logic that a Barfield or Young haven’t stuck with anyone “for a reason” can also be applied to Brad Emaus or Justin Turner… no?
by ThnkGoodnessforHowieRose on Mar 22, 2011 9:57 AM EDT up reply actions
You don't expect the Rangers to foot the entier bill
for Young do you?
by ThnkGoodnessforHowieRose on Mar 22, 2011 9:58 AM EDT up reply actions
A little different here...
and btw, using the logic that a Barfield or Young haven’t stuck with anyone "for a reason" can also be applied to Brad Emaus or Justin Turner… no?
Emaus was well regarded in Toronto but ultimately exposed because of a roster crunch…they had too many players for the 40 man and he up as an odd man out. Turner I’m not sure why he was exposed to waivers, but he seems to have some value, as he’s hit at every level of the minors and shown good plate discipline with decent power.
Barfield was a good prospect five years ago but after a solid rookie year in 2006, the Padres sold high on him. The negative against him was always that he had poor plate discipline and struck out too much for a guy with little power. His 2006 was thought by many to be kind of fluky and that premonition came true in his time with Cleveland. He spent most of 2007-2009 in the Indians MiL system and then has bounced around as a minor league free agent the past two years (2010 went back to SD and now caught on with the Phillies). Considering he’s already on the “minor league free agency” phase of his career, it’s not yet much of a comparison to Emaus and Turner, who have 0 and 35 ML plate appearances, respectively. Barfield’s got over 1000 at bats in the majors with a 77 OPS+.

by Steve Schreiber on Mar 22, 2011 11:14 AM EDT up reply actions
Brad Emaus is 24 and Justin Turner is 26
Josh Barfield is 28. Even those 2 years sepereatign Barfield and Turner is significant.
And Castillo doesn’t have to be a 2 or 3 win player to be better than Barfield. He merely has to be positive (which seems likely). Replacement level players are those who you can expect to find freely available year in and year out – guys like Mike Hessman, or Manny Acosta, or Jesus feliciano, or Josh Barfield.
Save Jenrry Mejia!
and the 7 yrs
separating Barfield or DelwynYoung from Castillo is even more significant.
by ThnkGoodnessforHowieRose on Mar 22, 2011 3:14 PM EDT up reply actions
Not when there are all established at being what they are.
28 year olds don’t suddenly turn into productive players.
Save Jenrry Mejia!
apples to oranges
he’d only have to beat out Luis Castillo, so the bar is incredibly low for him already. I know Barfield (if that’s who we keep going back to) has seemed to regress in the minors… as I’ve said I’d also choose Delwyn Young or even Pete Orr over LC at this stage… his .6 WAR and all!
by ThnkGoodnessforHowieRose on Mar 22, 2011 3:46 PM EDT up reply actions
Pete Orr is 31 and has a career -0.6 WAR (he's never been a positive value player in any of his 5 seasons)
Delwyn Young is 28 and has been worth 0.7 WAR for his 5 season career. He’s essentially the same player as Josh Barlfield; crappy and past the point where you can hope he’ll ever be anything more than crappy.
Save Jenrry Mejia!
The bar might be low, but none of these guys you are mentioning should be expected to beat it.
Which speaks to how shallow the pool of talent at the position really is.
Save Jenrry Mejia!
well, we could on all day I suppose
I would support giving one of the younger legs an opportunity and there’s at least a decent chance they could give you something… whereas you know you’ll get nothing with Luis. That’s pretty much where I’m coming from.
You keep citing some fraction of WAR from Luis in 2010 and I suppose that comes from what looks like a decent fielding figure… but how much weight can you put on fielding figures when we know they fluctuate wildly form year to year and in LC’s case, his decreasing range has been talked about ad nauseum.
Bottom line is that he is getting nothing but a tryout with the Phils. If he wins the job god bless him. Not sure why you are arguing for or defending Luis so vigorously… he’s horrendous.
by ThnkGoodnessforHowieRose on Mar 22, 2011 4:24 PM EDT up reply actions
The only things I'm saying is that 1) Castillo is horrendous at $6M, but not at $500K
and 2) expecting a bunch of crappy players who A) over the course of their careers haven’t been worth what Castillo was just for last year and B) aren’t even young enough to have any potential, to be better than Castillo doesn’t make sense.
Save Jenrry Mejia!
and often
the reason why many players haven’t done much like some of the ones we’re discussing is b/c their opportunities have been limited.
by ThnkGoodnessforHowieRose on Mar 22, 2011 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions
Barfield has 1075 career PA's.
Orr has 555 career PA’s (might have a case if he wasn’t already 31).
Young has 779 career PA’s (and up and down minor league numbers in AAA).
Still not getting where these guys have untapped potential.
Save Jenrry Mejia!
cause it's unlikely any
can be any worse than a rapidly declining LuisC… and all are several yrs younger.
by ThnkGoodnessforHowieRose on Mar 22, 2011 5:24 PM EDT up reply actions
Castillo at 35 was better than any of these other guys you mention have ever been.
(with the exception of Barfield’s 2006) That’s pretty damn bad. And these other guys aren’t even young in baseball terms.
Save Jenrry Mejia!
There's a reason Barfield hasn't been a regular player in some years
