Evans could also be considered AAAA. With Duda, Murphy, Hairston, Harris, and the prior mismanagement of his options (sent down in favor of Sheffield for example), he was just the odd man out.

Maybe he will clear.

would have been to have Tejada at 2nd and Evans instead of Murphy. I would have preferred that.

by dougdilg on Mar 28, 2011 8:39 PM EDT reply actions

Really?

Tejada has no business in the majors at this point, he can’t hit at all, and Murphy provides more versatility than Evans. They could have cut Hairston and kept Evans.

by Evan_S on Mar 28, 2011 8:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Tejada hit .281 in September

At his age a truer picture is given by looking at his progression, not his averaged results. He began well, then struggled mightily, and then found his way at the end. That’s something to build on. All the while he came through in the clutch and the Mets won when he was in the game. He did fine in ST and has continued right up to yesterday when he hit a 3 run triple. He never let his struggles at the plate affect his defensive play last year. The only reason he’s in AAA right now is to pave the way to not keep Reyes.

Bad Move By The Mets

This one will come back to hurt especially if he’s picked up by a NL East rival which is real possibility. He had great stats last season in the minor leagues – and batted .300 for us. I find it hard to believe that 23 homers and .907 OPS in the minors in 2010 are stats that 29 other teams will pass.

Although Evans didn’t have future here as starter, at the least, for this season, he would provide valuable depth and could have been later traded for some value after putting up more good numbers in 2011. Alderson will say he did it for Nick, but, I believe it’s a short sighted move for the team, this season. Our depth for first base now consists of Murphy and Duda. And for third, it’s Murphy. That’s it. I’m waiting to hear the Phillies, Nats or Braves claim Evans.

I still think there's a good chance he slides through unclaimed

Most teams have roster crunches going on, and as much as we love him “who” isn’t exactly a must have commodity. Someone might take a chance, but I’d guess waiving him early might have enough teams waiting for other options before claiming Evans.

I hate this.

Automatically assuming Bautista’s ‘10 season = steroids is lazy.
1. There were signs in ’09 that he was changing into a different type of hitter. He had a .393 wOBA and .349 ISO in Sep/Oct that season.
2. Toronto’s coaching staff have a very power-centric approach. Sit on your pitch and don’t swing at things you aren’t looking for. Use the stadium to your advantage (every single one of his homers was to LF (he’s a righty)).
3. If it wasn’t in his wheel house, namely on the inside part of the plate, he didn’t swing at it (24.1 O-Swing Rate (league ave was 29.3%) and for what it’s worth, his career mark it 19.5%)- and if he did, he usually fouled it off. He’s not all about the power. He had a 14.6% BB/9 (league average was 8.5%). He made the pitcher be perfect if he was going to get him out.

Is he going to hit 50 again? No, probably not, but Bautista is legit.

Save Jenrry Mejia!

by Ogre39666 on Mar 29, 2011 12:27 AM EDT up reply actions

you'll never manage to convince me that bautista wasnt on roids

a) even if you wanna look at his sept/oct stats from the yr before, who says he wasnt on roids than?
b) thats not a huge sample size. i remember that karim garcia (remember him?) once led the league in hr’s after the all star brake. it’s not saying much
c) the dude had an ASTRONOMICAL increase in HR’s. even if you wanna say the coaching staff is power centric and he revamped his swing and he got lucky. it still doesnt account for that much of an increase. maybe that’d cause it to go to 30-35, not 50
d) i agree w/ all the things you mention as being factors. but here’s the thing. just b/c you take steroids doesnt mean youre suddenly gonna hit 50. its roids plus many other factors. all these factors you mention are the reason that w/ roids he was able to hit 50. 50 is just not done anymore and for a guy coming off never having a big yr, its gotta be the roids
e) in my mind he’s in the same group as brady anderson, adrian beltre (last dodgers yr), ryan howard (58 hrs) as most obvious steroiders ever

by Wright of passage on Mar 29, 2011 1:29 AM EDT up reply actions

The Toronto coaching staff and their approach.

Usually you hear coaches say that they want there hitters to use all fields. Not in Toronto. They’ll give up some AVG in exchange for the power that comes with trying to hook everything down the line. There was a really great article on Bautista and Buck and the Toronto approach on FanGraphs that really outlined this much better than I can. I wish I could find it.

above league average?

bautista was way way above average and had never been even average in his prior journeyman career. how many guys go from a career of general suckitude to suddenly bashing by far the most hr’s in the league

Yeah Bautista was way above league average.

But going by your logic, when you apply it in general, every player that does any better than league average is on steroids.

no no no

i usually apply it only when players either far far outperform previous production (this isn’t to say that guys cant have career yrs, rather that some career yrs look really fishy). also most players who perform above league average are generally viewed as good players. bautista was garbage his whole career and suddenly he was the best player in the league. i have trouble believing that just a new approach alone made him into the player he became. i also apologize if i’m a tad cynical now when it comes to outlandish hr numbers. previous events kinda made that way a bit. does that make me think every player is on steroids. of course not. does that make me suspect guys maybe more than i should. absolutely

thats probably true

but i think you’d agree that bautista’s year last yr was not your average career year

Ryan Howard, really?

1)You think he can’t hit 58 HRs in that bandbox stadium on his own? So you jump straight to ‘roids, because it’s impossible for anyone to have a career year, ever.
2)I’m not entirely sure what year of Garcia’s career you’re referring to, but I’m assuming it’s 2002, when he hit a career-high 16 home runs, all after the ASB. Assuming he did in fact lead the league in 2nd-half homers that year, it doesn’t really jump out that much. The reason he didn’t hit any in the first half is because he was in the minors for all but 2 games until August. What I see is a 25-year old minor-league slugger who got hot for 2 months.
3)If you’re going to make such baseless accusations about players using steroids, at least use proper grammar. I have a hard enough time taking your post seriously without wading through your numerous basic grammatical errors.

1) you could be right about howard and i probably shouldnt have included him in that group. that being said it annoyed after he hit 58 that there were headlines along the lines of “finally a hr champ not on steroids”. i’d say it’s at least 50/50 he was juicing
2) my point about garcia wasn’t that he was roiding rather that ogre pointing out that bautista was fantastic in sept/oct shows that he’s not roid fueled. as you point out it could’ve been just a hot streak or some fluke (or he was already on roids). it in no way shows that he suddenly b/c the hr force he now is. its simply too small a sample size
3) not sure what grammar has to do w/ this discussion but i apologize. i’m not so careful about these things when righting quickly

by dabu7 on Mar 29, 2011 1:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Bautista being fantastic in Sept/Oct of '09 doesn't shows that his '10 wasn't 'roid fueled

it simply shows that he showed signs of breaking out before ‘10. And the way you posit the situation, there’s almost no way to prove you wrong (i.e. he didn’t take steroids). You’re assuming him guilty until proven otherwise when he should be assumed innocent until proven guilty (since his body mass and head size didn’t explode and the underlying process checks out).

of course there's no way of proving wrong

its all conjecture. and you are right here that i’m assuming guilt here (dont worry, in real life i try my best to not think that way) but again, i got very jaded by the steroid scandal and whenever i see something extremely fishy i tend to think the worst

The grammar thing's probably more of a pet peeve than anything else, really

Kind of a grammar nazi, so I notice that stuff more. But like I said, some people will give less credence to what you say if it’s poorly written out.

The other thing about Howard is that he wasn’t some vet who hadn’t shown much power before; that was his age 25 season. While you could attribute his loss of power last season to going clean, you could also argue that he’s just aging fast – guy’s already 31. There’s nothing in his stats that suggests steroids, and I don’t think anyone’s ever mentioned him as a user, outside of idle speculation. Much as I hate to defend a Phillie, it’s entirely unsubstantiated.

the howard thing for me has more to do w/ the fact that it was still technically (although at the tail end of) the “steroid era”. 58 hr’s isn’t just a lot, its a crazy amount. while i think it’s possible howard didnt take steroids (i certainly think it’s a lot less likely he did than bautista. howard has always been a power guy, w/ bautista it came out of the blue) i found it strange that he got a fully clean pass. i feel it’s that ppl wanna ignore the steroid issue and pretend everything in baseball is rosy

Three times in 2011, including twice in one week!

He signed with the Braves out of Venezuela in 2002. Traded to Cleveland in 2006, then to Texas in 2007. Waived by Texas in January2011 , claimed by Boston. The Red Sox had no room on the 40-man, so they had to expose him to waivers in order to keep him. He was claimed by the Cubs, who have now waived him. A brief glance at the scouting reports reveals that he was always an offense-only prospect. His offensive production hit a wall in 2009 and hasn’t recovered. Hasn’t slugged above .400 since 2008 and is said to be poor defensively. Perhaps not quite as intriguing as he seemed before I looked him up. Solid defense is pretty much a prerequisite for backup catchers, no?

I wanted Murphy sent down. He had options, Evans didn’t.

Someone took him in our league

so turn that frown upside down.. Then turn it back into a frown cuz I drafted Emaus and subsequently dropped him for a bridge relief guy in Joaquin Benoit. FML

I second NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO but also, tell me why he's not a cheaper, better option than say Scott Hairston?

Hairston, Fernando Tatis…Sheffield?

Could the Mets pull Evans back off waivers if they wanted to?

For example, if a claim is made could they pull him back and instead release say Harris? This could be Sandy’s thinking. Try and slip Evans through waivers to maximize depth and if he’s claimed adjust.

by Balagast on Mar 29, 2011 9:34 AM EDT reply actions

That isn't the type of waiver which allows players to be sent to the minors

If a player passes through revocable waivers, he is able to be traded after the deadline but must remain on the 25. Irrevocable waivers are used to send a player without options down. Evans is an irrevocable waiver, so if he’s claimed by a team he joins their 25.
