The Pepsi Porch
This has been bugging me for a while. The problem with the Pepsi Porch was no more prevalent than in today's final at bat of the first game of the double header. David Wright drilled one to his happy zone, opposite field...and it was a fly ball out to end the game. My biggest question is, why take away what was David Wright's homer zone? This park was built around Jose Reyes when it really should have been built around the franchises best player.

Because if you put the right field fence is 20 feet you can't call it the Pepsi Porch
And you can’t make money.
Gas prices today are a lot like a pitcher's ERA. Anything under 3 is amazing, under 4 is pretty good and anything 5 and up is something you want to avoid.
more like the poopsy porch
amirite?

It really was built...
…just to make a large profit by selling suites and overpriced seats. Shea was utilitarian and played fair. 45,000 of the 55,000 seats had unobstructed views. Now—-maybe 12,000 out of 42,000. Shea? Even during excrciating times, it offered a beautiful summer breeze and views of NYC. The stadium named after a bank was constructed from a hodgepodge of whims, false nostalgia, ADD, and rabid greed. “All fans are equal, but some fans are more equal than others.” It has some virtues—-better toilets, better food, Stella on tap for the drunks, etc.—-but it’s “not home.” There hasn’t been a meaningful game played there yet, and surely not one for a long time coming.
The stadium wasn’t built for Reyes over Wright. It was just built. With no thought. It’s a reflection of the nadir that composes the Wilpon mindset. And it’s numbing…
But don’t blame the loss on the field. Blame it on a mediocre and borderline-bankrupt team.

I didn't blame the loss on the field
it didn’t help though lol
Enjoying what may be the final season of two of my favorite Mets in Blue and Orange: Jose Reyes and Carlos Beltran
It would have played to our advantage
Had Hairston made a catch on almost the same type of play earlier in the game. Our crappy OF defense has taken what should be equal footing and given an advantage to our opponents.
"and views of NYC"
wait, what? From where? Shea was built facing away from NYC…
I agree with most everything else you wrote, but that’s false.

This strikes me as a totally subjective thing
And not one to be “debunked”. To some, Citi doesn’t feel like “home”. To others it does. It’d be like debunking someone’s favorite color. To each his own on this one.

Where do you get your numbers for the number of Citi Field seats with unobstructed views?

Whenever you hit a ball nearly 400 feet
and it doesnt go out, you have a serious fucking problem and it needs fixing.

Things like this will even out over the season
but I agree that parts of the field configuration are just silly. I’ve never liked the quirks and illogically tall walls. What exactly is the point?
The design of the stadium is whacky and ridiculous
But it comes a point where we have to stop saying our guys are getting cheated by spacious Citi, because the other teams that come in here have no problem banging them out.
I actually have n problems with the quirkiness.
I just don’t like the high walls.
Save Jenrry Mejia!
This
The quirkiness? Pointless, but whatever. Huge walls that even cost Mike friggin Pelfrey a home run? Not cool.

it's not really pointless
Wrights fly ball would have ended the game as a GS.

So we can either cry about it
or get over it and appreciate the non-dump of a stadium we have.

Great memories.
But the lack of memories at a 3 year old stadium isn’t enough for me to want the old one back.

nope, but i liked how shea played. I wish they had basically made a replica of it, just less covered in sticky stuff

Me too
I always liked that Shea was considered a “fair” ballpark without any gimmmicks like the wind at Wrigley, the green monstah at Fenway, the short RF porch in yankee stadium, etc, etc. I understand that many of those are left over from history but that’s the point. You can’t just make history.

mostly true, although while the stadium doesn't drain home runs as a whole
it pretty specifically and inexplicably was designed to be as difficult for Wright to hit in as possible. Honestly the stadium design confuses the hell out of me. The walls suggest it should be a pitchers park, but the lack of real estate in foul territory largely negates any assistance the high walls give us by giving batters more chances to get ahold of a pitch. This works both ways, sure, so I cant completely complain, but I feel like this stadium was designed by someone who has never actually watched a baseball game in their life.

Its designed for guy who crush the ball
The kind of hitters that hit absolutely no doubter HR’s. They can foul everything off and wait for the perfect pitch to demolish.
exactly, which is a terrible design for what is allegedly supposed to be a pitchers park

I'm not even saying a lot of our guys are getting cheated
just one. David Wright’s opposite field power has pretty much been destroyed by this ballpark.
Enjoying what may be the final season of two of my favorite Mets in Blue and Orange: Jose Reyes and Carlos Beltran
Parts of the field are ridiculous
But it seems kind of short-sighted to build a stadium you’ll be in for 40-odd years around a star you’ll have for the next five years.
I like the idea of a pitcher’s park — much better than Yankee or CPB — but I could do without the high walls and the quirk-for-the-sake-of-having-a-quirk Mo’s Zone.
but its not really built like a proper pitchers park
the walls will prevent longballs, sure, but the complete lack of foul territory goes against the basic principles of a pitchers park, giving your fielders as many chances to catch the ball as possible. It’s like they couldn’t make up their mind about whether or not it should be a pitchers park, and just screwed the whole thing up.

Bringing up our fielders
They have been terrible. I just looked on FanGraphs. As a team the Mets are dead last in DRS at -22. The to worst is at -14.
Our outfielders are at -4 and second worst so far. The pitching has been weak, but the problem has been greatly exacerbated by our defense being miserable.
yeah the defense in OF has been absoultely horrific
i never thought i’d long for Jason Bay in left field.

Do any new stadiums these days have a lot of foul territory?
I think that comes down to economics and having more expensive seats close to action than anything.

i feel like Petco, which is reasonably new
and a proper pitchers park, has significantly more foul territory, but maybe it’s just me. Anyone know where I could find foul territory measurements for ballparks?

and I agree, it's clearly an economics thing
but its not economical to build a stadium that sucks to play in, no matter how nice the expensive seats are
