The Amazin' Avenue Rec-ord Book: updates and interesting developments (including negative recs!)
If you're not sure what this whole thing is about, see here.
I just sifted through mounds upon mounds of posts dating all the way back to February 25, 2005 8:27 PM EST. Along the way, I made a few interesting discoveries:
1) Rec button - origins: When was the 'Rec' button invented? Late 2007 or early 2008, I presume? If you look back at any of the posts dating back to 2007 or earlier, you'd be hard-pressed to find a rec or two.
2) Negative recs - myth? The negative rec is a tale that has been passed down through the times, from here to here to here to here to here. Thought for ages to be a mere myth, it has been a subject of curiosity. Well, I have just confirmed the verity of the "negative rec". It is, in fact, real. I extend my heartiest congratulations to Eric Simon, for this utmost honor of dubiousity.
Update: Since the "-1 recs" was replaced with "0 recs" in the post, click here for an archived image of the post with -1 recs, in all its negative glory. (It is a very large image, at 1015 x 6415 and 1.33 MB)
3) Amazin' Avenue through the ages: Looking back through passages of time, Amazin' Avenue used to be a strictly-run confine, consisting of various forms of ungerground Metropolitans intelligentsia bounded together by pillars of axioms pertaining to the courses of sabermetry, protected somewhat harshly by the leading ideologues of the establishment. Since then, it has gradually turned into a more liberal community that has watered down the entrance requirements and has made the initiation process into the "fraternity" less of a boot camp. But most compelling of these developments are the boom in MSPaintz, which slowly took hold in 2008, expanded in 2009, and went absolutely nuts* in 2010. I think 2011 is transitioning into animated gifs, and I'm being left out in the dust! (but I'll get there eventually) Let us reflect and meditate on our rich history, and look forward into the future.
* Subtle Dickey reference
With that said, I'll report to you now the latest developments. I have finished the sifting process, and realized that the cutoff point for the top 150 rec'd posts is either 12 or 13, and not 15 as originally thought. I will now begin the sorting process, where I log all posts with 12 or more recs with details, and then the ordering process (self-explanatory). Then last, but not least, the editing and posting processes.
Work is progressing as planned, and on-schedule. Stay tuned for more updates!

I swear I don't mean anything offensive, but......
I’m sure there is medication that can help.
Seriously, though……..the effort is appreciated, but the reason remains a mystery.

It actually wasn't as hard going through archives as it sounds
I copied the web page address of the first page of archives onto Excel to cell A1, and took the page number out. I would then insert the number ‘1’ in cell B1. I copied cell A1 and pasted onto a certain amount of cells below, as necessary. Then, in cell B2, I typed in ‘=B1+1’, then copied cell B2 and pasted onto all the corresponding cells below. Then, I copied all active cells onto Notepad, removed the tabbed spaces, and copied everything and pasted it back into Excel. An easy next step hyperlinked all the text one by one. Then, I saved the Excel document as a web page and voila! Now, I had a hyperlinked list of every page of the archives, which I would open 50 at a time in a new tab using CTRL + left click. I made sure to disable the viewing of images for faster page loading. In each page, I simply used the ‘Find’ option to search for double-digit rec’d posts within that page. If the page did have a double-rec’d post, I saved it. If not, I just closed it and moved to the next page. Through this, I made sure there were no new posts, as all the posts would move downwards and potentially compromise the process.
It only took three hours to do. Piece of cake. In place of much effort, all that was needed was creativity to catalyze the process. Like they say, “work smart, not hard”.

Personally
I feel this is quite a study of prehistoric Amazin Avenue cultures and ways. I mean I read that first post that Eric wrote and he wrote something about diaries (?) which apparently were the cave paintings version of fanshots. I’ve only been around these parts for a little over a year now, but that was quite interesting to find out (also no recs? And negative recs?). I’m quite curious what circa 2005 amazin avenue looked like.
Hope I’m not the only one because now I just sound weird. Anyway, nice job sj…you’re work in the field of AA ancient history embiggens us all.

I’m also interested in this stuff. Hell…when this site started I was still in high school. And reading Metsblog. AND COMMENTING.

Negative recs
When SBN first implemented the rec system there was a bug whereby you could wind up with a negative number of recs if you rec’d and then un-rec’d a post very quickly. In short, the rec wasn’t being recorded synchronously (nor was the button being locked while the rec was saved) so you were actually able to un-rec it before the rec had been recorded, so the math would allow you to subtract one from zero recs. Thus, the negative rec.

I love this kind of stuff
Just last night, out of curiosity, I looked at the open thread from the last Mets post-season game – game 7 of the 2006 NLCS. There were 180 comments – roughly the same amount a regular season game gets by opening pitch. What I love is that there are no comments between right before Yadier’s homer and roughly the time the Mets put two runners on in the 9th. Even funnier is the “we’ll be even more awesome next year” tone after the game ended. Yes, I remember being that naively optimistic once myself.

I've reviewed that thread once, for kicks and giggles.
Really dead. If that game had taken place today, how many comments would that thread have? Just in the span of the last two, three innings or so?

after this, will you find the most rec-ed individual comments?
I kid, I kid, I can only imagine how gargantuan that undertaking would be.

Yep
The sneak peek is really for giving everyone an idea of what the list will look like, without giving it away, plus it will inspire confidence in the project as well

Is it bad that when I re-read these old posts,
and try to rec an individual comment, it tells me I already rec’d it? That can’t be good.

Thanks a lot for the support!
Things are coming along great, and while I’ll be less involved in the various threads within the site, I’ll be working on this ambitious project while staying well-informed of the latest news. (It appears that the Emausphere has been taken over by the Red (and Green) Guard.
