Goldstein and Scout Diss Flores; News? | MetsMinorLeagueBlog.com
Toby Hyde responds to some badmouthing of Wilmer Flores:
First the news that Flores isn’t going to play shortstop in the Major Leagues: not news.
And yes, he could play SS on your son’s little league team, and he would be damn good at it. The quote sounds good, it’s entertaining, but it’s exaggerated for emphasis. (Duh.)
The news that Flores isn’t really fast: also not news.
The news here, and really the only news here, is that this scout doesn’t like Flores’ ability to hit. This is interesting, and deserves further elucidation.

This is why I hate quotes from anonymous scouts
They know they won’t get quoted unless they include some hyperbolic, incendiary line like “He couldn’t play SS for my son’s Little League team.” Even though they’re anonymous, they seem to get a huge ego boost from knowing they were quoted in a story somewhere.
A rational, nuanced quote (that might contradict the writer’s preconceived notions) won’t get nearly as much play.
wouldn't it be beneficial to downplay a player's value
if you’re a scout from an opposing team?

I suppose
But I think you see plenty of equally hyperbolic quotes from anonymous scouts that go the other way, about how amazing young prospects are.
My point is more that scouts are rewarded for being as outlandish as possible

I'm not sure what the "reward" is supposed to be.
Goldstein is a scout himself who talks to other scouts about what they think about players. Maybe Goldstein hasn’t seen much of Flores this season, or he just wants another person’s opinion. If scouts are prone to hyperbole it’s because human beings are prone to hyperbole.

Not concerned about a 19 year old in High-A ball.
Look at the kids picture and you can see that he is lanky and is yet to fully develop. Make sure he has the fundamentals now and let the power develop in time.
Any asshole who says “he couldn’t play SS on my kids little league team” should not have a job scouting. Go work at McDonalds toolbag.

I love Toby's retort
What is also interesting is that Toby and KG are pretty good friends, so this might be addressed in an interview later on.
Well, the mets are hoping
he is Cabrera light-he is already 50% there: no speed, no glove. Now: can he hit and will he also have no common or baseball sense? We shall see. Personally, I do not want ot hear about anonymous quotes anymore. I hereby disregard all past and future anonymous quotes. There.
how many 19 year olds have a polished approach at the plate?
hence why he is at high a ball learning. and he is only going to get stronger and faster over the next couple of years.
Me likey Ike and Mikey
I find this really odd
Its not like Goldstein to overract like this to a players stats less than a month into the season. If wilmer has a few big games where he goes 2-4/3-4 with a couple bombs his numbers will look a lot better.
Well then
I guess now he's Babe Ruth
