Man, I remember trying to rationalize how Broadway could be a decent starting pitcher.

Where can I buy one of those?
Gas prices today are a lot like a pitcher's ERA. Anything under 3 is amazing, under 4 is pretty good and anything 5 and up is something you want to avoid.

Oh yes
yet another crowning achievement of the Omar/Jerry regime. I always liked how people defended the move based on his injury history. Although it was a slightly valid point, the much larger issue was the squandering of useful resources and the elevation of players based on managerial whims based on nothing more than extremely small sample sizes and the contents of an idiot’s stomach. Its the little things that add up over time and the many small moves that Omar and Jerry completely screwed up overshadow any moves that were beneficial to the team. Honestly, I can only think of 3 really good moves that Omar made: 1) Signing Beltran. 2) Signing Reyes and Wright to extensions. 3) Trading for Johan Santana. Although, Johan being hampered by his shoulder is taking the shine off of that win for Omar.
The Reyes and Wright extentions were awesome.
The single most brilliant acts Omar has done. 4/24 for Reyes was awesome. I forget whats Wright got but that was a smart deal for Omar. God how can someone so stupid do something that smart?

The entire post 2005 off-season was pretty good
Signed Bradford, Valentin, and Oliver, got Duaner Sanchez for Jae Weong Seo, and traded for LoDuca and Delgado without giving up much of anything. For three months he was like George Costanza when he abstained from sex.
This...and a great analogy there.
That offseason was magical for sure, although some of those moves were pure hail mary depth moves that somehow worked (who would’ve thought Jose Valentin and Darren Oliver would be major pieces to a 97 win team? Not me when they were signed). All of those trades were excellent at the time for us though…the Cameron for Nady trade, the 2 Marlins trades for LoDuca and Delgado, the Seo for Duaner deal and the whole Kris Benson progression. I remember thinking that Benson for Julio/Maine trade was a really stupid deal at the time but it’s incredible how Minaya turned a mediocre, overpaid Kris Benson into 2 pretty solid starters in John Maine and eventually Orlando Hernandez (of course what happened in the playoffs was awful but as we learned, age and a lack of depth never fazed Omar Minaya).

It's kind of hard to screw up
pre-arb extensions as long as the player stays relatively healthy. Though the Wright deal actually broke the record for that type of contract I think. Either him or Sizemore. Worked out better than Sizemore, obviously.

Wright had 6/55 which is pretty awesome as well.
That Reyes deal was a downright steal, though.

The Twins have no one to show for Johan...
Sounds like a good deal in my book.

I'd say the trade was an easy win for the Mets and Minaya.
They gave up nothing of consequence (unless Deolis Guerra defies all odds and becomes an ace pitcher) for an ace still relatively in his prime. It was the contract that was a loss for the Mets.
Obviously hindsight is 20/20, so I’m not saying they shouldn’t have given Johan that big extension but it’s looking like a pretty big albatross at the moment, considering we have no idea what Johan will be like when/if he returns.

I would not call it an easy win
First, the only value the Mets got in return was the right to sign Santana at a market rate. Second, the fact that the prospects lost to the Twins seem irrelevant right now is not decisive as those prospects had positive “opportunity value” at that time, i.e. could have been used to obtain something of value in 2007.

Agreed
But we werent getting Santana without that extention. The only thing we can hope for is Santana comes back and pitches well, which will hopefully send Pelf to the # 4 slot, which might relax him into pitching like hes capable of.
