Toronto 2000.....
A funny thing happened on the way to the Hall of Fame. After a respectable start to a now great career, a highly touted former 1st round draft pick begins his third season in disastrous fashion compiling an ERA of 10.64 through his first 19 games and earns a trip back down to Class A to attempt to make a mechanical change to his delivery as well as his approach to pitching.
The results.....
2001 to 2010 Win Loss record 156-72, 2 Cy Youngs, 6 top 5 Cy Young finishes.....
Cleveland 2007.....
For a guy that everybody wanted as an amateur, as evidenced by the fact he was drafted 3 separate times before actually signing with the Montreal Expos in 2000, they sure were quick to send him back down to hell in 2007 when he produced a 4-9 record to go along with a 5.38 ERA through his first 16 Starts.
The results.....
2008 to 2010 Win Loss record 48-25 1 Cy Young, 2 memorable post season runs.....
I'm sure by now you've figured out the two pitchers mentioned above are the great Phillies Roy Halliday and Cliff Lee, respectively. Sometimes the simplification of just working out the kinks, gaining that confidence back and smoothing out mechanics in the minor leagues can make a major difference for a pitcher.
Which brings me to.....
Mike Pelfrey. What is the right thing to do? He is yet to show that he could put it together this year and whether this is a "Bridge Year" or not the hit his confidence is taking against major league hitters this year has the potential to do long term damage to his career.
Is the bullpen an option? Will he work it out in Queens? Will he and Pat Misch become the formidable 1,2 punch up in Buffalo?
