David Cone: Sabermetrics Enthusiast
Former Mets great David Cone works 30-40 games a year in the Yankees television booth and he is gaga for information. Here are a few Cone snippets from this excellent NY Mag interview:
I love Fangraphs and the mountains of data you can get there, especially with hitters' tendencies and what percentage of pitches they chase outside the strike zone.
I'm a little jealous that I didn't have this sort of data when I was playing.
There's not a day that goes by that I'm not on Fangraphs or Baseball-Reference.com, or several others, just reading articles or really breaking down data. There's so much to do, and I like to break down overall team tendencies.
But I love the Pitch f/x data, and I'm interested in learning more about the HITf/x data. I think how the ball comes off the bat is really interesting.
Comments
I lobby David Cone for pitching coach.
We've got ourselves a ball club, the Mets of New York town!

Is there any way SNY can pry him away from YES
A deep-analysis show with Cone, who is still very-well liked by Mets fans (at least…me), might be an interesting break from the idiocy that channel usually has.

This doesn't surprise me
Cone always came across as a thoughtful guy and definitely the type who would appreciate advanced stats.
Everything Cone said is right. Fangraphs and BRef are such useful websites. I could waste hours a day looking at tendencies of pitchers and hitters. BrooksBaseball is just as great.

Hey, wait! I'm having one of those things. You know? A headache with pictures?

Well
Coney always did have a flair for digging deeply to uncover things that normally don’t see the public eye, and for showing a more intimate side of himself to the fans – even when sitting in the bullpen. So this should come as no surprise.
