question regarding pitch type values on fangrapjs
In the article the writer says that Gee’s changeup is effective, but not a dominant or something to that effective. Watching the pitch it seems to have very good fade and drop and seems to get a lot of swinging strikes. That is just my impression from watching him though, which can be misleading. I’d like to know how to reference pitch type values on fangraphs but I don’t know how to interpret the numbers and couldn’t find a link on fangraphs that explained how the metric works. Can anyone bring me up to speed what the numbers represent (can’t figure out if positive or negative values are good) and some examples of what would represent a great pitch, good pitch, mediocre and poor etc. Thanks, much appreciated
Gee's Change-up
Gee’s change-up has been top 30 in overall value and per 100 pitches value at fangraphs. That makes it a true plus pitch, I would say. You have to keep sample size in mine, and I don’t have any standard deviations handy, but anything over +1 run per 100 pitches is a good pitch. Anything over +3 is elite. You can find those numbers in the wCH/C column.
The best change-up last year was Shawn Marcum’s, which was worth 26 runs above average, and 3.35 runs per 100 pitches. He throws it a ton, though. Felix Hernandez’s, for example, was as good on a per pitch basis, but overall was worth 8 runs less, because he didn’t throw it as much

That was an ESPN article!?
I’ll be honest, I expected, “Gee has 8 wins. Doc Gooden had 8 wins. Is Gee the next Gooden? His 8 wins make him the Mets’ best pitcher, and an All-Star!”
A surprisingly good read.
