(Generation) K-Mets Boast Exciting Young Trio
At Tri-CitiesSports.com, Steve Wilmoth profiles the talented trio of teenage hurlers that reside at the top of the 2011 Rookie League Kingsport Mets rotation.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Kingsport will make their 2011 season debut tonight against the Johnson City Cardinals with heralded young lefty Juan Urbina on the hill. Urbina -- who is still just 18 -- showed tremendous potential in his first pro season, pushing his fastball up to 94 mph with an advanced change, all while exhibiting impressive poise for a kid who would otherwise be preparing for the junior prom.
Behind Urbina is another 18-year old, 2010 tenth round steal Akeel Morris. He slipped thanks to concerns about competition in his native Virgin Islands, but the Mets knew they were onto something when right out of the gate the slender right-hander was tossing 95+ mph heat. He posted a .148 average against in the GCL in 2010.
And finally, the least well known but perhaps the most primed to jump into mainstream prospect circles, 19-year old Domingo Tapia. The powerful righty is a man-child, listed at 6'4", 186 lbs and reports had him hitting 100 mph during instructs. He is Mejia-esque, working in the mid-90's with a two-seamer and what's more, he throws a ton of strikes. Big time sleeper candidate.
Should be an interesting year in Kingsport.

Tapia is Mejia-esque?
That means we should put him in the bullpen. Immediately!
Now, kids, being eaten by a crocodile is just like going to sleep; in giant blender.

The Mets should promote him straight from Kingsport to the Majors!
He’ll be our long reliever!
Because that's what teams do with good prospects, right?

The Mets should proactively give him Tommy John surgery now...

I really like Alberto Baldonado
at GCL too. Tall, projectable lefty who was dominant as a 17 year old in the Dominical leagues last year.

not who I expected this to be about (Harvey, Familia...)
but cool that people are getting excited about these guys. Can’t wait til they start playing and advancing
I LIKE IKE!
Kingsport Mets manager Frank Fultz
Fultz came to the New York Mets organization in 2009 after serving from 1992-2008 as strength and training coordinator for the Atlanta Braves.
very interesting path…
Akeel was one of my top 5 favorite picks last year.
He’s got an awesome name!

Who's the guy the mets got in the 9th rd. this year?
His name was Xorge Carillo. Now that’s a cool name.

I know it's likely pronounced "Hor-Hey"
But god I hope it’s pronounced “Zorj.”

I's Hor-hey like Jorge Posada...
Son, when you participate in sporting events, it's not whether you win or lose : it's how drunk you get.
Then it's settled.
We’re calling him Zorj regardless.

I could not have been the only one
who read this and thought the mets had a young pitcher in their system named juan uribe
you were not the only one

he's gone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!OLIE PEREZ IS GONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Urbina put on a couple MPH in a year if true.
Pretty impressive for an 18yo lefty to throw 94 even if that’s max effort.
Always great hearring good news, just one thing though.......
Could we please just banish that whole generation part of the thing and go with something else this time around? Something like Genesis K or anything else you can think of.
Thanks, and thanks again for the preview.
Agreed.
In fact, let’s not even give them a name as a trio. How about we just call them “Pitching Prospects”.
Calling them Generation K or whatever is just setting us up for disappointment and years of mockery if they bomb.

true
generation K implies that they will either (a: have rotator cuff surgery. or (b: get traded for victor zambrano. or (c: get hit by lightning.

Generation DL? or the DL Kids
Generation TJS?
Future busts?
Potential LOOGYs and ROOGYs?
They are “potentially useful” if their arm and shoulder don’t fall off, they don’t get snakebitten and they develop good enough stuff to actually get people out
I LIKE IKE!

Generation K 2.0 YES YES YES
Generation K 2.0 seems like such a nice name.
Of course, what´s lacking is a high draft pick – enter RHP Michael Fulmer who, once he signs, should be on a similar career path, probably with a good shot to open 2012 in the Sand Gnats rotation with these three.
Of course, I also very much hope that we won´t have to wait for these 3 (4) pitchers to lead us back to the promised land. Because we´d indeed be looking at 2015 or 2016 in that case.
However, if they stay healthy, the current group of upper level pitchers Harvey, Familia, Mejia, Carson, Gorski, etc. produces enough to join Niese, Gee and others on the major league staff by 2013, then the next group will be very interesting trade bait, possibly. Or nice internal replenishing.
Tapia- must be jinxed already!
"Fantasy, reality, science Fiction. Which is which? Who can tell?"
Michael Fulmer
Seems like he´s about to join the trio:

I´m really intrigued by this pick. His scouting report sounds a lot like that of LAD RH Chad Billingsley. And while Billingsley has been somewhat inconsistent at times, he has generally been a legit # 2 SP for LA over the past 4 years.
Let´s hope he stays healthy and joins the front-end of the next wave of P prospects.
