Who's the Odd Man Out? (If Santana Returns)
I know it may never happen, but I wanted to hear your opinions. We have 5 capable starters. We all know we can't give up Dickey. I believe Niese has the most potential in the long run, and I think most of you would agree. Capuano has been great for the most part, and I can't imagine ditching Gee after how well he's been doing, even if he was supposed to be the fifth guy. Does this mean if Santana returns Pelf is the odd man out? Or does Gee go back to the bullpen? I think it'd be odd for the opening-day starter to get the shaft, but he has been doing the worst of our 5 starters as of late.

I think we'll have to cross that bridge when we get there
Capuano could get injured, Gee could start pitching like shit, and Santana might not even come back this year anyway. Too many if’s to start speculating now.

I highly doubt we see Johan this year
but if we do, it’s got to be Pelfrey if all the other pitchers are still on the team and pitching the way they’ve been pitching. I wonder if they’d try out a 6 man rotation?

I agree
He is the most inconsistent. He can throw some good games but other times he just seems to have nothing onthe mound. It is alomost like he is playing in an annual company softball game

if he comes back, I'd talk to pelf about a AAA visit to get his stuff in order again
and remember how to throw the pitch that made him effective in the first place
Hey, wait! I'm having one of those things. You know? A headache with pictures?

actually, Pelfrey as the long-man might not be such a bad idea
sometimes pitchers like Big Pelf improve after a shift to the pen, and this team needs a guy like Tak2 in there…

if he comes back
and none of the rest get hurt (knock on wood) or traded, you will probably see Gee in the pen.or back at AAA. (Which would be really funny if he ends up in the All-Star game and then back in the minors. I wonder if its ever happened.)

Capuano
If Santana returns, I suppose Capuano can shift to the bullpen and play the role Takahashi played last year. Setup relief and long relief – or even close if needed. He pitched most of 2010 in the bullpen.
While Capuano has been pretty solid, let´s not forget that his overall numbers are hardly impressive:
13 HR allowed in 90.2 IP with 99 H
Only Pelfrey´s numbers are slightly worse overall – and he doesn´t seem likely to switch.
Of course, at this point, I don´t see Santana returning before late August and maybe a handful of starts this year, so the point is probably moot anyway.

he has a 100% save rate through 6 seasons
which is better than anyone in the history of baseball, thats over 135 years!
I LIKE IKE!
It's not a conspiracy!
It’s just that everyone is independently helping him out so that he can keep his save rate at 100%.
No way that's a conspiracy theory!

Johan may come back late enough
that you’d see Gee back in the bullpen to keep his innings down. However, since he was a mid-season callup it may not be necessary, especially if Johan isnt 100%.
The question is
if Johan comes back, and pitches well. Who do you trade next winter? Trading Johan would free up more $ for resigning Reyes or trading Pelf, while he still has some value(think john maine)
Unless some team hires Omar as GM

what if it is the fred wilpon owned dodgers?
I LIKE IKE!
yeah, wishful thinking
Johan is still owed a hell of alot of money, around 55million plus, for 2012, 2013, and buyout
They'll have an open spot next year
assuming they don’t re-sign Capuano, who’ll be a free agent after the year. If they do re-sign him, then I’d imagine Pelfrey’s the odd man out either by trade or non-tender.

trade the Pelf-licker-man
yeah time to say good-bye, maybe sign cj wilson of the rangers?

Pelf to the bullpen is the obvious choice right now
Although it wouldn’t necessarily surprise me if, a month or so from now, Pelf is on a tear and Gee has turned into a pumpkin and we see Gee moved to the pen.
Depends when he comes back

Thanks for your responses everyone
I personally would want to send Pelf down and hope he can work things out. I hadn’t even thought of trading Santana, though (unlikely, but interesting to think about)
