R.I.P. Francisco Rodriguez's vest. Once more for good measure.
The vest graveyard takes in another victim. Mercifully.

Seconded
It’s witty and brilliant. It’s a vest graveyard.

Bay has a vesting option as well? (still not sure how that works)
Goddamn…did Omar has some kind of compulsion to give these things out?

Yeah, Omar got vest-happy his last couple of years.
According to Cot’s Baseball Contracts, Bay has a $17 million club option for 2014, which becomes guaranteed (aka “vests”) if he has 600 plate appearances in 2013 or 500 plate appearances in both 2012 and 2013.
In essence, Sandy’s going to have another tight-wire act on his hands if he wants to slip out of that 2014 option.

Question
Do you think the Wilpons will let Sandy cut Jason Bay at the beginning of next season or will they wait till the start of the 2013 season?
by Unappreciated Genius on Jul 13, 2011 11:29 AM EDT up reply actions
I doubt they'll flat out cut him at the beginning of next season.
They still owe him $35 million in guaranteed money over the next two seasons ($16 million in ‘12/’13, along with the $3 million buyout that would be paid if he doesn’t vest). I’m sure Sandy will do everything in his power to deal him somewhere but with the year he’s having, there likely won’t be many takers unless the Mets eat a lot of the money (something I could see them doing, especially since they’ve got a bunch of prospects potentially in the wings in Nieuwenhuis, F!, Duda, Den Dekker and Cory Vaughn in the relatively near future).

Woops...got cut off.
Even if they eat a lot of money, there will likely be very few takers and they’ll probably get little to nothing in exchange.

Worse than than
They’ll probably have to deal Bay with a decent player and a B prospect and get a C- prospect (or two) just to keep up appearances.
Bay’s contract means he is severely negative in value. Specifically, he’s paid $16M/yr. for (per fangraphs) $6M/yr. in value (generously). He is worth -$10M per year.
Any sane GM would demand $5M/yr. in cash considerations AND $5M/yr. in expected prospect value just to break even. If you want to keep up appearances and get C- prospects in return, you’d need to give even more.
If I were a GM, to take Bay, you’d have to throw in Nick Evans and a Josh Satin, or perhaps maybe a Reese Havens at least, to get me to give you marginal prospects. Trading Bay is pretty much tantamount to trading Oliver Perez, impossible unless you throw him in as a burden.
Nothing can get by him; especially in a small room: Mike Francessa

maybe they will let Ray Ramirez take a look at Jason Bay
and “approve of his injury?”

damn
so a vesting option is just a guaranteed option. Makes Omar’s last couple of years look even worse

Yeah, a vest turns into a guarantee if the condition is met
Omar gave these away like candy, which was the source of much consternation here
It is, but only when Omar's giving them out.

Bay had better be a good guy and find his stroke soon
If he can have a monster year in ’12 or ’13 we might be able to trade him to a contender. Wishful thinking.
Biggest problem
with Bay, and Beltran for that matter, is they have full no trade clauses. Another stupid thing to do.
by afrosupreme on Jul 13, 2011 11:31 AM EDT up reply actions
Actually
I think Beltran is a 10-5 player. Ten years in the league, five years with the same team, which gives him the right to not be traded to any team without his consent.
by Unappreciated Genius on Jul 13, 2011 11:36 AM EDT up reply actions
I think he probably is 10-5
but Cot’s has a full NTC listed as well.
by afrosupreme on Jul 13, 2011 11:43 AM EDT up reply actions
yeah
but he has said he will accept a trade to a contender, and only a contender would be interested in acquiring him…
so it prob wont be a big thing… I dont see Beltran as the type of person to not want to play for any city (as in, I dont want to go to the west coast, or be away from my hometown or anything like that).
I think it was Bobby V who said: "You are never as good as you are when you are at your best, and you are not as bad as when you are at your worst."

I was starting to write a FanPost about K-Rod, the vest, and re-signing him.
No need for that anymore. Good thing it didn’t get past two paragraphs.

we are the only team that issues vests to their players
other teams just have standard uniforms
One day, this team is going to kill me.
We invest a lot of our time into it.

I have a suggestion
We accidentally, on purpose of course (or the other way around), assume that closing time means impending doom is upon, and then an “oh, wait?” moment follows.
