AAA - Buffalo Bisons (48-68)_______________________________________

BUFFALO 2, SYRACUSE 3 / 11 INNINGS (Box) Satin, Lutz, and Martinez singled in the first, Raul Chavez and Jesus Feliciano singled in the second, and the Bisons had a 2-0 lead for lefty crafster Mark Cohoon. It didn't last, as the game shifted back to a tie, and then a tie, and then a tie, for nearly eight static innings in which the better part of the game's 23 strikeouts were recorded. From the fourth inning through the ninth Buffalo managed just two baserunners, neither of whom left first, much less scored. With the game in extras Feliciano scorched a lead-off triple only to stand wanly on that bag as his teammates struck out, popped up, and popped up. In the eleventh, Michael O'Conner stepped in for the second straight night and for the second straight night pitched his team into a ditch. The winning run came home on a sharp liner in Fernando's direction, and the Herd walked bentheaded toward the dugout.

  • 2B Josh Satin: 1-5, R, K; .365/.429/.508 Hit streak to 15
  • RF Fernando Martinez: 2-5, RBI, 2 K; .260/.332/.431
  • 3B Zach Lutz: 1-4, K; .305/.384/.475
  • LHP Mark Cohoon: 5 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 4 K, 1 HR; 63 IP, 6.71, 80 H, 20 BB, 36 K, 8 HR

AA - Binghamton Mets (48-69)_____________________________________

BINGHAMTON 6, TRENTON 5 (Box) 2B Reese Havens turned on the steam with two outs in the first, knocking a double and, two walks later, taking part in a 3-run base-clearing charge as 3B Michael Fisher's double rattled against the wall. For five cheerful innings SP Collin McHugh tossed shutdown 3-hit 5-K ball, and Tobi Stoner added his own mellow brand of pitching success, carrying a 6-1 lead into the eighth -- the lead extended by a Raul Reyes home run and a second Havens & Fisher collaboration. In the eighth, though, Stoner allowed two baserunners and was smoked by a three-run shot. Coming back to pitch the ninth -- now in a 6-4 save situation -- Tobi was smacked for a lead-off triple, and replaced by a less-than-sure Josh Stinson, who walked his first batter and let the man at third score on a wild pitch, cutting the lead to one. A pick off, a flier, and a ground ball later, the visiting squad could finally sigh "whew."

  • CF Matt Den Dekker: 1-4, 2B, K; .234/.322/.417
  • 2B Reese Havens: 2-5, 2 R, 2 2B; .279/.363/.421
  • SS Jordany Valdespin: 2-5, 2 K; .297/.341/.483
  • 3B Michael Fisher: 3-4, R, 2 2B, 4 RBI; 32 games since his demotion: .284/.323/.474
  • LF Juan Lagares: 2-5, 2 K, 2 SB(5); 15 games in Bingo: .403/.424/.532
  • Kai Gronauer: 1-4, K; .236/.317/.300

Applachian League (R)- Kingsport Mets (25-23)_______________________________________

PULASKI 1, KINGSPORT 2 (Box) Spindly right-hander Jacob Lugo induced five grounders and a pop fly before surrendering his first base hit, then proceeded to strike out five and walk none in six innings of one-run work. This year's 39th draft pick hails from Bossier City, LA, and if you wish to google him he previously went by his middle name "Seth." The size and the K-rate were the sell, no doubt, as the "Most Underrated Pitcher of the All-Summit League" posted a 5.25 ERA at Centenary College, alma mater of Robert Parish.

Meanwhile, DH Cameron Maron singled in his first at bat, helped himself to second, and was singled home by last night's star Julio Concepcion. The 1-0 lead evaporated with a well-executed squeeze play, at which point the Mariners got chesty and were cut down stealing home. In the bottom of the third, 2B Yucarybert De La Cruz smoked a ball as long as his name, pausing at third base before Dustin Lawley knocked him to the plate. That established an early-going 2-1 lead, which held through eleven half-innings of no run play. Kingsport pitching struck out nine, walked none, and handed the ballgame to the victorious Mets.

 Beaming Star of the Night

Two-thirds of the Bingo runs came off the bat of third baseman Michael Fisher, who cleared the table with an early, authoritative double and extended the lead where insurance was necessary. The Fisher King has improved his contact and slugging since the demotion to Backman's club but the patience continues to elude him. Speaking of patience, a newly demoted twenty-six year old probably doesn't have much left.

Stinking Goat of the Night

No less than three Met affiliates tarped off the diamond and gazed at the falling rain against the lights. But if you can't accept the elements as a Stinking Goat, there are some situational candidates. Josh Satin and Val Pascucci failed to score the all important runner at third with 0 and 1 outs, respectively -- in the org's only lost -- and Michael O'Connor allowed the walk-off in an eleventh inning that might not have been played.
