"He's cutting his own throat," the player said. "What's his record, six and nine? He's supposed to be the ace of the [bleeping] staff. Why don't you go and win 12 or 13 games?"
One anonymous, unamused Mets teammate of Mike Pelfrey.
This is in response to Pelf, who told Mike Puma of the Post that "It's unrealistic for anybody at the end of last year to come in and say, 'The Mets, this is a one-year thing, next year we're going to win it all,' " Pelfrey said before the Mets' 4-3 loss to the Diamondbacks last night. "It's unrealistic."

Bullshit, media-has-nothing-better-to-do, manufactured controversey
Pelfrey is 100% correct.
Anonymous Mets player also needs to learn how baseball works. Pelfrey can’t will himself to win games. Maybe anonymous Mets player should hit some more, so that Pelfrey can win ballgames, if he’s so concerned about Pelf’s W/L record. Mike isn’t helping himself with a 4.something ERA, but he’s had a bunch of no-decisions and/or losses where he pitched well enough to get a win with a little more run support.
Personally, I think anonymous Mets player is bullshit, and made-up. While only 28 or whatever, Pelfrey has a longer Mets tenure than most every other player on the team- everyone besides for David and Jose. Everyone else is a newcomer, and that seems to go against baseball protocol, to bash a teammate when you’re the new guy.

I'm inclined to agree that
“anonymous player/executive/scout/general manager/whatever” is usually made up, especially in this situation and it’s probably just Mike Puma inserting his opinion without having to say “in my opinion”. And I also appreciate the fact that Pelfrey is somewhat realistic in his view of the team.
However, it’s probably something that he shouldn’t be saying out loud to reporters, for the sake of his teammates and even possibly the sake of his standing with the team. To me, it comes off as defeatist, considering how most of the players on the club (with Collins included) have been extremely positive all year through the good and bad. Collins said that management will be evaluating the players through the end of the year to see who deserves to stay and who goes and I can’t help but imagine this does nothing positive for Mike’s case to stay.
Now, I don’t necessarily think this, but I could see a scenario where his comment comes off to Collins/Alderson as “I didn’t think we were going to be good anyway so I didn’t put in as much effort as I would’ve if we were a better team”. That’s not an attitude you want on a winning club, especially from the guy who’s easily been your worst starting pitcher all season despite being anointed a leader. But maybe nothing comes of it and maybe it’s just a miscommunication.

What's the context of his entire conversation with the journalist?
He very well could have been, “It’s unrealistic [to say we were gonna win it all suddenly after last year] but with the front office Sandy put together, we’re a competative team now, and in another year or two, we’ll be right back where we were in 2006-2008 as the team to beat in the NL East. Probably even better”. Changes the context of everything.
I don’t think Alderson is stupid enough to let Pelfrey go based on, “He was realistic, knowing he’s not on a playoff team”. Guys in lower-key cities/ballclubs, they know they’re not making playoffs, and when they express those sentiments, are not “picked on”. Different words, but saying, “In a few years, we can be competitors” is the same as saying, “We’re not winning it all this year”. I do believe Mr. Francoeur has been on the record saying just that, in KC.

It doesn’t matter that Pelfrey is correct; because of his position he simply should not be talking like this on the record to reporters.

I think the player is real
But I think Pelf’s comment might have traveled some distance between what he actually said and what Puma told this anonymous player. “Well, Pelf says you guys were never in it anyway.” It would be child’s play to get a competitive person riled up – if you were trying to, and some “reporters” do, which is why so many players despise the media.

What player fits the bill for
being vested enough in the Mets’ chances to win in 2011? I get the notion that journeymen/newly acquired guys like Hairston, Harris, or Capuano, for examples, are out, as well as rookies, like Turner or Beato. Doesn’t sound like something David or Jose, the club leaders, would say.
Thole, maybe? I think there might be too much of a pot calling the kettle black situation there. Same with Pagan. Paulino, maybe?

I hear you
And we don’t know who it is. We can say with relative confidence it wasn’t someone like Reyes or Wright, or someone from the pitching staff since they would understand you shouldn’t be judged by wins and losses. Excluding those players, there’s still a lot to choose from. Hopefully, this was made up and it wasn’t anyone at all.
Harris just popped into my head as soon as I read the quote in the Post article.

time for.... Metsblog comments regarding a media-made controversy
From duffystaub: “Loser. Pampered baby. Compare his grit and drive to guys like Utley or Jeter. I would not be sad to see him shipped to KC.”
KaiserSoze74: “I agree with that Met anonymous Mets player. Go out there and win some damn games. You suppose to be the F—-ING ACE, and you’re pitching like our worst starter. I normally don’t get bothered by these players comments, but this dude has nerve. First, Rick Peterson was the issue and not getting thru to the young guys, he’s gone and Pelfrey still sucks. Then it’s Thole, so he gets his own personal catcher. He may pitch better with Paulino, but it’s not like he’s out there pitching like an Ace. Hey Pelfrey, stop licking ur hand like a pornstar reject and pitch better. Some of those wins should be losses, because it’s the lineup who saved his ass a few times.”
ike4president: “I hope people boo this loser big time next game at CITI.”
Dan Carson: “Not surprised at Pelfrey’s remarks. Just look at his body language on the mound and in the dugout.. Seems like he is not mentally tough enough to be successful at this level. Even when he is pitching well, he is knocked off his game much too easily. At this point, he is what he will be. Time to cut bait.”
Paul Korec: “These comments are coming from a man who stands at 6’6” tall, but pitches like he’s 5’5", and not for nothing, saying what he said only goes to support that theory. He lacks fight, determination, and guts, which are all things that comprise a winner at anything in life. Maybe that explains why he loses as much as he does. He just doesn’t have what it takes to be a winner."

I would keep him and if his ERA gets really low again,
like next year, trade him. The Mets don’t have much SP depth now.
probably the sensible thing to do
but emotionally…….I want him gone.
One day, this team is going to kill me.
In one word: Yes
In more depth, his second half has been a lot better than his first. When all is said and done, he’s still going to have a subpar year. In arbitration, he’ll probably get somewhere between $5 and $7 million dollars. Overpayment? Quite possibly. On the FA market, a guy fitting his profile- about 200 IP, ERA in the 4.00s, probably makes about that, plus more years. I’ll roll the dice on Pelf one more time.

bah
that’s uncalled for. You know I am a Mets fan. You also know that Pelfrey is a shitty pitcher, and because of that he should shut the fuck up, play ball, and let others decide what is realistic or not. For example = realistic would be for him to pitch at .500 level on a .500 team.
One day, this team is going to kill me.
I agree.Pelfrey is a head case and is a waste of talent but I spend a lot of time around Yankee fans laughing and

by Putnan Prince on Aug 13, 2011 7:11 PM EDT up reply actions
How do people reach the conclusion that someone is a "waste of talent?"
Maybe he just doesn’t have the talent people originally thought was there. He’s far from the pitcher we drafted who was expected to be a heavy strikeout pitcher with ground ball tendencies. He’s a big guy with a good fastball and little else.
if he doesn't have the talent, how can he waste it ?
if the glove don’t fit, you must acquit
One day, this team is going to kill me.
I thought we drafted him to be a tall pitcher
he is kicking ass at that, always has
I LIKE IKE!
I think that's rash judgment
To put it in perspective, Pelfrey can still prove highly valuable to a few teams out there in great need of a no. 4 or no. 5 starter. He has shown enough skill to at least be a decent lower-half rotation SP.
The thing that disturbs me most about him are the following:
1) Declining strikeout rates (from years past)
2) Increased HR/9 rates
3) Declining GB%
4) Declining GB/FB rates
And as if though things weren’t bad enough, he is still actually being helped by a lower BABIP rate.

my 2c opinion:
I don’t mind when a player speaks his mind, less so when an idiot owner does (snip);
that said, this isn’t a proper place or time for Pelfrey to discuss his honest feelings, especially when a reporter will always edit and take words out of context to sell papers. Especially with a team struggling to stay .500, and “Big Pelf” having a crapfest year.
