As everyone likely knows, the Marlins just demoted their #3 hitter Logan Morrison to AAA. Evidently, they didn't like that he was outspoken on Twitter and elsewhere, having criticized Hanley for a lack of leadership. The concurrent move of releasing the useless Wes Helms makes total sense. This one? Less so.
Morrison is still shy of his 24th birthday, and has been in the big leagues for parts of two seasons for a total of 606 ABs (roughly a full season). Here are his numbers thus far: .353 OBP, 80 BB, 19 HR, 78 RBI, 83 runs, 41 doubles, 10 triples, triple-slash: .262/.353/.457. Again, one season under his belt and he's still 23 years old.
If we assume that next year's OF could be Bay, Pagan, and Duda, it's arguable that if the Mets managed to get Morrison, he could be the team's most productive outfielder. Lest you fear that the cause of his demotion is that he's a clubhouse cancer or toxic personality, by most accounts, he's extremely popular with fans, plays injured, and works hard. There's no way to know just how low his stock has fallen with Marlins management, but if I'm Sandy Alderson, I'm checking in. Thoughts?
