AA - Binghamton Mets (44-67)_____________________________________
ALTOONA 4, BINGHAMTON 3 (Box)
Tobi Stoner left the Curve dazed and confused through seven excellent innings, but the B-Mets bullpen couldn't nail down the victory for him. Josh Stinson allowed 3 runs in the 8th to take the loss last evening. Eric Cambell broke an 0-13 skid with a pretty nice night at the plate to lead the B-Mets offense.
- 2B Reese Havens: 1-3, BB, RBI
- 3B Eric Campbell: 2-4, HR, K, RBI, 2 R
- CF Matt Den Dekker: 1-3, K
- 1B Allan Dykstra: 0-1, K
- SS Jordany Valdespin: 0-4, K
- RHP Tobi Stoner: 7 IP, 2 H, 1 R (0 ER), 4 K, 3 BB
Hi-A St. Lucie Mets (20-18)________________________________________
ST. LUCIE 6, JUPITER 1 (Box)
There was a second game that got started but was suspended in the third inning due to rain. Nobody we usually highlight has done anything as of yet, so I'll skip that one for this morning. St. Lucie is trailing 1-0 in the top of the third, and it's scheduled to be finished today.
Pedro Zapata got the game going the right way for St. Lucie, homering on the first pitch of the game. That was really about all the help Greg Peavey would need in this one, although the Mets piled on 5 more runs in the 6th once they got into the bullpen.
- RF Cory Vaughn: 0-2, K, RBI
- 3B Jefry Marte: 1-3, 3B, BB
- SS Wilmer Flores: 2-4, 2B, 2 RBI, R
- RF Cesar Puello: 1-4, K, R
- C Francisco Pena: 0-1, 2 BB
- RHP Gregory Peavey: 7 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 6 K, 1 BB - Complete game
Lo-A Savannah Sand Gnats (25-14)__________________________________
SAVANNNAH 2, AUGUSTA 0 (Box)
Ryan Fraser and Michael Hebert combined to allow just 4 hits on the evening as Savannah cruised to yet another win. The win pushes the Gnats to 20 games over .500 on the season, and I'd expect to see some guys from Brooklyn promoted as the season winds down to help the offense in the playoff push (namely Danny Muno).
- CF Darrell Ceciliani: 0-3, BB
- 3B Aderlin Rodriguez: 1-3, 2B, R
- 2B Wilfredo Tovar: 0-4, K
- C Blake Forsythe: 1-4, 2 K, R
- C Albert Cordero: 2-3
- RHP Ryan Fraser: 5 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 5 K, 2 BB
Short Season A- Brooklyn Cyclones (25-21)_______________________________________
BROOKLYN 3, WILLIAMSPORT 2 (Box)
The Cyclones won this one on a walk off sac fly by Javier Rodriguez. Travis Taijeron and Nelfi Zapata drove in a pair of runs in the second, but that would account for all of the offense until the ninth. The clubs conclude their series tonight at 7 with the game scheduled to be on SNY.
- SS Danny Muno: 2-4, 2B, BB, K
- RF Javier Rodriguez: 0-2, 2 BB, RBI
- 3B Brian Harrison: 1-4, R
- CF Travis Taijeron: 2-4, 3B, RBI, R
- C Nelfi Zapata: 3-4, RBI
- OF Chase Greene: 1-4, R
- RHP Marcos Camarena: 5 IP, 1 ER, 5 K, BB
- C Camden Maron: 1-3, 2 BB, R
- CF Tillman Pugh: 1-4, K, RBI
- LF Julio Concepcion: 1-4, R
- OF Gregory Pron: 0-3, BB, K, R
- C Jeffrey Glenn: 0-4, 2 K
- CF Eudy Pina: 0-6, 2 K, R
- C Jeyckol De Leon: 2-6, 2 RBI
- RF Gilbert Gomez: 1-5, HR, BB, K, RBI, R
- SS Randoll Santana: 0-5

I wonder what this means going forward
I was looking at Hyde’s blog, 17 year old 3rd baseman Elvis Sanchez in the DSL, one of the higher rated IFA’s we signed last year has a .151/.383/.217 in 213 PA. He has a 25.4% BB%. That is ridiculous and not that small of a sample size. I wonder how BB% hold up for someone in the DSL as they advance, cause it may just be the pitchers are really wild and he’s just taking advantage of it and getting on base.
yeah
i pointed that out last saturday, sanchez is definitely putting up an extremely unique line. but to your point, how much should we take from it?
well, looking at some previous examples, i’d say a little but let’s not go nuts. ruben tejada spent his age 17 season in the VSL — a level as raw if not more so than the DSL — and posted a very nice 1:1 BB-to-K rate. going forward they definitely regressed a bit as he’s climbed the ladder but he has always maintained the strong plate discipline he showed in the DSL.
juan lagares also spent his 17-yr old season there and posted around 6% BB-rates, compared to a career rate around 3%. however, the silver lining there is that he was a rushed prospect and now that he’s caught back up he is posting rates around 6% again.
however, then we look at jordany valdespin who also posted an impressive nearly 1:1 BB-to-K rate but as he progressed that plate discipline absolutely fell apart and now that is one of the biggest weaknesses of his game. however, he played in the DSL as a 20-yr old, for whatever that’s worth. basically i’d say that it likely shows a repeatable skill set but like all numbers in the DSL, should be taken with a huge grain of salt.

Is Michael Hebert a prospect to watch?
He’s still relatively young (looks like he’ll be 21 next week) and he’s pitched very well in a small sample between his rehab in the GCL and now in Savannah. As a former 7th rounder out of HS, does he have any chance of a major league future? What is his stuff like?

hebert
i mention a bit about him in the upcoming Savannah review (tomorrow) but in short, i wouldn’t say he’s a prospect but he’s at least worth keeping an eye on. he’s the kind of guy who hasn’t quite pitched up to his stuff — solid 91-94 fb, good/inconsistent curve — but as a 20-21 yr old, he could easily figure things out and put his name on the map. in fact, like you pointed out he’s already begun to do that so i wouldn’t be surprised at all to see a strong year out of him with savannah in 2012.
