Daniel Murphy's season over after left MCL tear — ESPN New York
Daniel Murphy suffered a Grade 2 tear of the medial collateral ligament in his left knee and is done for the season, according to a source familiar with the injury. Murphy will not require surgery, but will have a four-month recovery time.

yeah, I knew it when I saw it
I was watching the broadcast on TBS and they were saying it looked like he was spiked. I was liek are you serious, his knee went 6 inches sideways. I had the injury before and it sucks. I did not have surgery and have a somehwta physical job. I was light duty for a month, and really not 100% for about 3 months. Everytime I ran for about a year it acted up.

Lame Hagin kept saying he got spiked and he'll be fine
Howie and Gary right away saw that he did some damage to his knee.
Awful, awful news
Hope he comes back next year kicking ass.

this is why we can't have nice things
no surgery though, that’s nice. may the Hammer rehab successfully and come back with a vengeance next year.
Really had a great season...
Hit .320/.362/.448 in 423 PAs a tough pitchers’ park. Best of luck to him going forward.
That sucks
He was a lot of fun to watch this year. He had become a very good role player here. I hope he’s given a good chance to win the second base job next year.
3.0 WAR in 2/3 of a season
that’s more than a role player. that is a solid-above average ML regular. his success is BA driven though (in that he has a poor walk rate and low power), so take that for what you will.
I agree on that
I meant he’s a good non star type player. He might have been able to a 4 WAR player which is very, very good. I’d also like to see him draw more walks.
It does seem that there are many players fitting this description
Hence, the 84 All-Stars this season, most on record

This.
I don’t understand how people can’t grasp correlation ≠causation.
Save Jenrry Mejia!
Keep Reyes, Trade Wilpon.
Well...
Second basemen are taught how to protect themselves as it is a very dangerous position. So the logic it not totally faulty.

But that is assuming that there was anything he could have done to avoid them.
Put any other 2B in those situations and they get hurt too.
Save Jenrry Mejia!
Keep Reyes, Trade Wilpon.
You don't know that
I don’t know that. Nobody knows it. The guy gets jumped on for saying MAYBE Murph shouldn’t play 2b since he’s had 2 season ending injuries in 2 years compared to the number of other second basemen who have had season ending injuries in the last 2 years .
He said “maybe”. I was just defending him by saying his logic is “not totally wrong.” But we’re wrong here – okay.
"Sometimes you make a mistake and you get hit in the head." - Eli Manning
"two years, two separate year long injuries"
He’s implying a direct relationship as if Murphy caused those things to happen.
Save Jenrry Mejia!
Keep Reyes, Trade Wilpon.
Well if Buster Posey gets run over again next year
You think Giants fans might say he shouldn’t catch anymore? We do know his injuries were a direct result of him playing 2b. Were they his fault? It doesn’t seem so. But who knows if his footwork is crap or if he’s slow around the bag or has poor positioning leading to a higher probability of getting hurt? Or is it just bad luck? I don’t know and you don’t know either.
"Sometimes you make a mistake and you get hit in the head." - Eli Manning

by metseaglesknicks on Aug 8, 2011 2:15 AM EDT up reply actions
How is it Murphy's fault that some guy barrel-rolled over 2B?
Or that some guy slid late and got his spikes caught on the bag which caused his foot to pop up?
Murphy’s positioning looked completely normal.
Save Jenrry Mejia!
Keep Reyes, Trade Wilpon.
Not his fault
However, 2b are a little more prone to get hurt. It’s the nature of the position. And some are just better at avoiding injuries there. Murph hasn’t played a ton of 2b. I think the job should be his coming into Spring Training, assuming the rehab goes well. Still, this is why I was against the idea of Wright moving to 2b, which was brought up in a thread a couple of weeks ago. Even with proper footwork, etc., you’re just more vulnerable there.
during the game thread, I posted that it looked to me like
Murph was positioned awkwardly.
One day, this team is going to kill me.
Freak plays or lack of experience to get out of the way
He should never play second again … period.
I strongly disagree
He played adequate defense there before he moved over to first due to Ike’s injury. Murph’s bat plays very, very well at second. I would give him another chance to start at second next year. No reason to go with an inferior player like Turner at second because you’re afraid Murph might get hurt again.

Dont know
I always thought that Murphy wasnt cut out for the NL. But hey Im just saying Murph should move from 2nd for Murph’s own good.
Murphy in the infield is generally a good infielder.
he’s got awful instincts but he’s got the range, the arm, and the hands to play around the infield. he can certainly play defense and play in the NL.
i would have send the 2B job is his job to lose next year in ST and i still think it is. but who knows now.
it's impossible to have "awful instincts" and be a "generally good infielder".

And neither is it indicative of his decent ability to play second base

-Peter Drury, the one time his commentating has ever been acceptable.
At the same time,
we should ask the question of whether Murphy’s quirky instincts set him up for injury at second base. Plays like those aren’t likely to happen on the corners.
I saw the play live. Is there a safer way to cover second base?
by raggedMestizo on Aug 7, 2011 10:08 PM EDT up reply actions
You can go in front of the base
and set up there and swipe backwards. A little safer, yes. But a guy coming in foot first should pop up over the bag like that. It was a very late, fairly clumsy slide, but not malicious.
Odd, because he was a good second baseman

Robbed Reyes of a few hits, GW triple and run scored, first MLB HR, and ends Murphy’s season on his first MLB stolen base on a terrible late slide.

The team, the fans, of course Murph the most, but I bet Collins feels horrible for putting him at 2nd. The odds of him getting hurt there had to be at least 20,000 to 1. the GOOD news
is that MCL injuries aren’t terribly serious compared to ACL/PCL injuries. Usually with some rehab, you’ll be fine within a few months. He has all offseason +2 months to get healthy. He’ll be fine.

I think so, as well
though I wonder how his outlook changes for the following season

But here are some players I think should get looks for the 40-man roster:
AAA
John Lujan
Chris Schwinden
Zach Lutz
Val Pascucci (maybe)
Kirk Nieuwenhuis
AA
Eric Campbell
Allan Dykstra
Jordany Valdespin
If Brahiam Maldonado had better plate discipline, I’d add him here. He does have power, though. (20 HRs)
By the way, if you thought the pitching within the organization is generally sub-par, you would be correct. The way Brad Holt and Tobi Stoner are struggling, is particularly disturbing.

This list is by no means set in stone
There are some omissions for sure, and some listed may not quite be ready to taste big league action. But who knows?

I doubt Val Pasucci
since he’s a minor league vet, but probably Captain Kirk or Schwinden.
"Fantasy, reality, science Fiction. Which is which? Who can tell?"
Shame that Kirk is out for the year
Squeezed to Song and Bendtner and Song and Nasri oh lovely lovely lovely!
-Peter Drury, the one time his commentating has ever been acceptable.
I doubt it, too.
But it’d be a nice reward for a guy who’s completely owning the IL this year.

Eric Campbell has been dreadful all year in Binghamton with a .225/.336/.307 line
so I doubt you see him this year. Kirk is done for the season and I kind of doubt Dykstra gets a call. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Holt and maybe even Havens get called up. Both are Rule V eligible at season’s end and I’d imagine they’d want to protect both of them. Holt’s overall line looks bad but he’s been better as a reliever. His ERA is a bit high, but he’s K’d 24 while walking 9 in 20 innings as a reliever.

Campbell I didn't get either
but I can see Dykstra getting a call-up – got 15 extra roster spots.
I LIKE IKE!
That's 15 extra ML roster spots
but currently, there’s only 1 free spot on the 40 man roster, which Dykstra isn’t on yet. It’ll be interesting to see how they juggle things this offseason because there are a lot of interesting names who are going to be Rule V eligible. These include:
Josh Satin, Kirk Nieuwenhuis, Mark Cohoon, Chris Schwinden, Bobby Carson, Jeurys Familia, Kai Gronauer, Reese Havens, Brad Holt, Sean Ratliff, Wilmer Flores, Jefry Marte and Cesar Puello among a few other minor leaguers with some potential.
For the rest of this season, they could easily just send Ike, Murph and Buchholz to the 60 day DL, since we assume that they’re done for the year. They could also DFA some of the filler like Manny Alvarez, Josh Stinson or even Dale Thayer to create more room. However, come this offseason, since we expect Ike, Murph and Buchholz likely to be back for 2012, they’ll need spots for them (though that likely comes at the end of spring training when they’re activated) as well as Johan. And then that doesn’t even account for acquisitions made in the offseason. Some spots will also open up as free agents leave and players are DFA’d (and I’m sure there will be a lot of them), although those spots will have to be filled by someone else.
So my point? They’re going to have to do a lot of juggling and we’ll probably see some of these guys dealt (sort of like the infamous Henry Owens/Matt Lindstrom for Vargas/Bostick trade, which was a Rule V juggling act) and others will ultimately be exposed to the Rule V draft come December. I’d imagine they won’t use up a 40 man spot on Dykstra who, let’s face it, has been decent at AA mainly because he’s not Eddie Kunz. He’s shown solid plate discipline but his contact skills and power leave much to be desired. And not to mention that he only plays 1B (and not very well).

I am actually not worried about most of those players being taken rule V
because most of them would not be able to last on a major league roster for an entire season. I see your point about the 40 man roster situation though, it is an annoying obstacle that too often gets overlooked as a legitimate problem/reason that some moves get made

The Mets didn't see Jesus Flores getting taken out A+ ball back in 2006.
Oops.

Campbell hasn't been *that* bad
He has a 49 BB:64 K ratio in 329 AB and a .336 OBP, so I think it’s bad luck. He makes contact, but more of his outs should have been base hits. It could be a skewed FB rate, but I don’t think that could explain it enough. Campbell’s stuff looks good by the numbers, in terms of process, but the results have not reflected that. Heck, if he had a .275 AVG, he would have an OBP close to .390. I see the good here, and I am being realistic.
2nd half breakout? Don’t bet against it.

Amazin' Avenue Baseball Mogul (sparbz)
The Amazin' Avenue Rec-ord Book (4/17/2011 edition)
He had either a hand or wrist injury last year
so that is probably what’s hurting him, but his power has been almost completely sapped this season. The contact and plate discipline are great but it seems like he’s just not making solid contact, considering the huge dropoff in power. He could be a rebound candidate next year, but I doubt he gets the chance in the majors this year. It seems pretty unlikely that he gets chosen in the Rule V draft and thus, probably doesn’t need to be protected, especially considering how many better candidates there are. He had a poor offensive season and supposedly isn’t much of a defensive player, so a team would be taking a major leap of faith that his power was going to come back.

As for the lack of power and injury (unbeknownst to me), you do have a point
His isolated power (SLG – AVG) dropped dramatically, from .161 (2010) to .082 (2011).

Lujan pitched a bit in spring training for the major league club.
He was a AAA Rule V pick out of the White Sox organization a few years ago. Usually those guys are just depth acquisitions but Lujan actually has turned into what looks like a potentially decent major league reliever.
