Carlos Quentin a Met?
Basically their idea is to put Carlos Quentin in left, Bay, in center, and Pagan nontendered. The idea of a defensive outfield of Quentin/Bay/Duda is horrible.

This is all kinds of bad
Putting Bay in CF is like putting a square peg in a round hole. People are enamored with this idea simply because this will make him more worthy of his contract (in their eyes) since he’s playing a more premium position and his offense doesn’t look as bad there. Defensively, though, this is a terrible idea. Bay has been a LF, and not a great one at that, for the majority of his career, even during the height of his athleticism. Quentin is a DH who fakes it in the OF. And Duda is a LF playing RF. There is no range in that trio whatsoever.
we'd also have to trade an arm and a leg to get him
Now if we wanted to do a Bay for Quentin swap, I’d be down for that.

Bay has been good with the glove this season though.
can’t say he’s fast enough to play CF.

It's amusing
Most people propose that the Mets improve their speed, pitching, and defense in order to win at Citifield, yet they make suggestions like this. And regardless, the Mets aren’t adding another contract to their team.

This
Offense wasn’t the problem this year. So adding more offense-only type players into this lineup is beating a dead horse. We need guys who are just as good defensively as they are offensively, or maybe we could even sacrifice a little offense with a defensive first player.
We need pitchers with 101% GB rate
Or 100% K rate

Why would the White Sox trade their best outfielder?

haven't we learned from Bay
Citifield is not for sluggers, even when the fences com ein it isn’t. It will be friendly but it will not be CIN. They need line drive guys that hit .320 not guys who hit .250
Any task BIG or small, Do it well or not at all
Wow this is even more ridiculous than I originally thought
First of all, Quentin, just like Pagan, is entering his final arbitration year which means (barring an ill advised contract extension) he will be a member of the Mets for exactly 1 year. He is not a long term solution and his production would have to represent a substatial upgrade in order to justify making the move. As mentioned in the article, Quentin is going to make more money than Pagan next year, probably about $2 million more. Also, just because the White Sox want to trade him or are “likely” to trade him doesn’t mean they will give him up for free. This means that the Mets will have to stretch an already tight payroll to fit him in AND give up potentially useful pieces AND let a decent player in Pagan walk away for nothing. Finally, and most importantly, Quentin for Pagan which is bascially what this is, isn’t much of an upgrade. By my quick calculations, assuming both Pagan and Quentin repeat their 2011 offensive numbers, this would represent a difference of about 20-30 runs over 600 plate appearances. However there’s a pretty good chance that all of this 20-30 run improvement would be cancelled out when defense, baserunning, and regression are factored in. Pagan’s a decent bet to rebound next year on both sides of the ball and the Mets would be significantly downgrading their defense at two positions. Even in the absolute best case scenario, the Mets would only be improving by a couple of wins which isn’t much when you have a mediocre team that is unlikely to contend. There’s no need to do anything drastic here. Just keep the outfield alignment the way it is (while looking for a possible upgrade for Bay) and wait until after 2012 when the market for outfielders will likely be much stronger and the Mets chances of contending will hopefully be better.

Alex Rios
I´d actually target OF Alex Rios instead of Quentin. And while Rios certainly hits worse than Quentin, he´ll probably be available straight up for Jason Bay. Unlike Bay, Rios can play either CF or RF and actually makes 12 mio $ per year for the next 3 years while Bay makes 16 per year over the next 2 with a 2 mio buyout to make it 34 over 2 while Rios makes 36 for 3 with a 1 mio $ buyout.
Getting Rios gives you options regarding both Pagan and Duda. And actually saves 4 mio $ in payroll for 2012.
And since JP Ricciardi gave Rios his current deal, don´t think this is such an outlandish scenario.
And if we´re talking improving the defense, this´d be a nice first step.
Rios has had some nice years too
A down year this year but that’s with a BABIP a full 70 points below his career average. If we can get Rios without giving up a top prospect that would be a very good move.
Alex Rios?
The guy owed $13 million for the next three years and is coming off a season where he posted a 60 OPS+? There was a reason why the Blue Jays were laughing to the bank when the White Sox claimed him. No, thanks.

No thanks.
His offense has been awful 2 of the last 3 years, and playing in a hitters’ park, too.

Well but...
…unlike Bay, he can play CF and provide plus defense in RF.
And unlike Quentin, he won´t cost a top 10 overall prospect or two.
Look, at worst, Rios needs to be cut.
But unless you feel Bay is likely to return to form, this may be the case as well.
Both make about the same $ guaranteed over the next couple of years – with Rios having one extra year and Bay more on an annual basis.
This´d be a swap of bad contracts with Rios being a better fit here.
Yep
Rios is due $37.5 million from 2012-2014. Bay is due $35 million from 2012-2013.
I would probably consider such a move b/c of the Mets’ surplus of players who can fill LF and RF, and their comparative dearth of CF options. I would definitely do the move if the White Sox would throw in a mid-level prospect.
I'll take Jake Peavy
Look at his stats- he sucks. The White Sox need to traid.

I'd love to have Quentin
I’d hate to have that outfield
Hey, wait! I'm having one of those things. You know? A headache with pictures?

The mets will already have four power hitters in their lineup
Especially in citi field, I can’t think of anything more ridiculous than adding another, especially one with a -31.3 uzr.
Hitters are hitters. Power is good.
Citi field doesn’t mean the mets shouldnt get guys with power and less speed, I’m sorry. I’m a little upset that the stadium is as much of a pitcher’s park as it is, but that doesn’t mean it needs to dictate how the team is built, I don’t get that. The mets should just get players that are a good value and Quentin isn’t that. So as I’m rambling I guess my point is that I think the sentiment that the mets need to stay away from traditional slugger types because of the stadium is ridiculous.
Kicking knowledge in the face.
The defense is purely at the heart of why this is a bad proposal.
He’s a bad defensive player who, in this alignment, would be sharing an outfield with Lucas Duda and Jason Bay. It’s just like the Murphy/Duda/Bay proposal from a few weeks ago. The offense would be completely outweighed by how many bloop singles would fall in front of these guys and how many extra base hits would find the gaps. If they were able to deal Bay and then acquire Quentin with Pagan still in center, maybe it’d be better but that’s not the proposal that’s being talked of here.
But yes, totally agree. Offense is offense and Quentin’s got big time power.

do we have the Dumb Hitter in the NL, no?
then stay away from Quentin. As for Alex Rios…oh good lord, if those of you dislike Pagan….haha!
