Four More Mets Prospects Assigned to AFL
Beyond their first group of players, according to ESPNny, the Mets will also be sending LHP Robert Carson, RHP Taylor Whitenton, 3B Jefry Marte and C Juan Centeno out to AZ this October. This will be Carson's second consecutive AFL season. In 24 starts with Double-A Binghamton, the 22-year old lefty has posted a disappointing 4.99 ERA with a .299 opp. average in 2011. Whitenton has always flashed major league stuff but this year the 23-year old former 39th rounder sharpened his command and is suddenly in the prospect discussion. He is currently tops in the SAL in opp. average (.192) and second in ERA (2.51). After getting off to a scorching April with Hi-A St. Lucie, 25th ranked prospect in the AA Preseason Top 50 Jefry Marte's development has continued to stagnate. Since April he hasn't done much on his way to a .249/.314/.346 season line. Finally, catcher Juan Centeno was not considered much of a prospect so the defensive specialist mostly backed up Francisco Pena in 2011. But the 21-year old has begun to open eyes thanks to a real knack for contact, striking out just 22 times in 2011.
